KDE Plasma 5.8 LTS Came to Kubuntu and Linux Mint KDE: What the 2016 Rollout Meant

Historical update: In December 2016, Kubuntu and Linux Mint KDE users were waiting for KDE Plasma 5.8 LTS packages through a Kubuntu backports channel. Plasma 5.8 had already launched upstream on October 4, 2016; packaging and distribution—not a new operating system release—were the remaining steps. As of August 18, 2026, Plasma 5.8 is an obsolete branch, and the old PPA is not a current way to install a desktop environment.

What the 2016 announcement meant

KDE released Plasma 5.8 LTS on October 4, 2016. The December news was about getting that existing release packaged, tested and distributed to particular Ubuntu-based systems. A Linux distribution decides when to build and publish KDE packages, so an upstream release did not mean every distribution received it at once. KDE’s Plasma 5.8 announcement describes the upstream release; the contemporary report covers the Kubuntu and Mint packaging context.

The desktop environment was also only one part of the software stack. The report cited Plasma 5.8.4, KDE Frameworks 5.28.0 and KDE Applications 16.04.3 as versions being staged. These are separate components with separate version numbers, not one combined release number.

Which systems were named

The December 2016 report identified three intended systems:

  • Kubuntu 16.10, based on Ubuntu 16.10 “Yakkety Yak.”
  • Linux Mint 18 KDE, known as “Sarah.”

The report described the Kubuntu Backports Landing PPA as the route for these users. This is a period-specific description, not a guarantee that every named system received identical packages at the same time. Kubuntu’s historical version table shows differing versions across archives and backports channels, and is explicitly outdated: Kubuntu version history.

Linux Mint 18 KDE shared an Ubuntu 16.04 base with Kubuntu 16.04, but the two distributions were not interchangeable: Mint maintained its own packaging, defaults, repositories and support policies. The period report’s mention of Mint should not be read as a universal compatibility guarantee.

What “LTS” meant for Plasma

KDE presented Plasma 5.8 as its first long-term-support Plasma release, aimed at users who valued a stable desktop, including enterprise and less technical users. The designation applied to the Plasma branch; it did not automatically confer Ubuntu’s operating-system support period on KDE packages. Distribution maintainers still controlled packaging, testing, publication and withdrawal.

Wayland was not included in Plasma 5.8’s long-term-support promise. KDE said it was evolving rapidly, even as the release made it more practical to test. The distinction matters: an LTS label for Plasma did not mean every part of the desktop stack had the same maturity or support commitment.

Task management and multi-monitor improvements

Reworked Pager and window-list applets shared task-manager data more effectively. The release also improved multi-monitor options, keyboard navigation through grouped windows, and task-manager context menus with media controls. Users could drag a file onto a task-manager entry to open it in the associated application.

Simpler global shortcuts

Shortcut configuration was simplified, with support for modifier-only shortcuts. For example, users could assign the Meta key alone to open the application menu.

Wayland became more testable, not a universal replacement for X11

The release added xdg-shell support, including support for GTK applications, improved touchscreen support, touchpad-gesture infrastructure, sliding popups and clipboard synchronization between X11 and Wayland applications. KDE nevertheless warned of glitches and missing features. Plasma 5.8 did not make Wayland a fully ready replacement for X11; the upstream announcement is explicit about both the improvements and the remaining limits: KDE Plasma 5.8 release notes.

How the historical PPA upgrade worked—and why it was risky

Kubuntu’s Backports PPA documentation describes a channel for newer major Plasma, KDE Frameworks and KDE Applications versions not yet considered ready for the standard Ubuntu Backports repository. The documentation also warns that large changes to the KDE dependency stack can carry considerable regression risk: Kubuntu PPA documentation.

The following commands describe the documented historical backports workflow, not a recommended 2026 installation path. The December report referred specifically to the Backports Landing PPA; do not assume that this general Backports PPA instruction is identical to that landing channel.

  1. Confirm the release. Run lsb_release -a and establish that the machine is one of the period-targeted systems before considering the historical route.
  2. Prepare for a major desktop change. Back up important files and record installed packages. A PPA changes core desktop packages and can cause dependency conflicts, removals or problems with the graphical login.
  3. Add the documented backports PPA. The historical Kubuntu instructions use sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports.
  4. Refresh package information and inspect updates. Run sudo apt update, then apt list --upgradable to review the proposed changes.
  5. Apply the upgrade only after reviewing it. The documented command is sudo apt full-upgrade. Unlike a narrow package update, a full upgrade can install or remove packages to resolve dependencies.
  6. Restart and check the result. After rebooting, verify the Plasma version in System Settings → About this System or run plasmashell --version.

Disabling a PPA does not necessarily undo package upgrades; downgrades or removals can complicate recovery. Mixing unrelated PPAs or upgrading only part of the KDE stack can also leave inconsistent packages. If the graphical session fails, an older kernel or alternate session at the login screen may help diagnose the issue, but these historical steps are not a verified recovery recipe. Keep a complete backup and be prepared for package repair or a clean reinstall.

Why some users waited instead

For a 2016 user, the backport offered a newer Plasma branch and usability improvements without reinstalling the operating system. Waiting was also reasonable: a landing channel was for staging and testing, not necessarily equivalent to a stable distribution archive. A major desktop-stack change could affect the display manager, session, display configuration and KDE applications. Users prioritizing reliability—especially on Kubuntu 16.04 LTS—could wait for packages to move through the distribution’s channels.

These channels had different purposes. Security updates and ordinary distribution updates were not the same thing as Ubuntu Backports, Kubuntu Backports or Kubuntu Backports Landing. In particular, the landing channel’s staging role should not be confused with a routine security update.

What happened to the Plasma 5.8 branch

Plasma 5.8 continued to receive maintenance releases after the initial rollout. KDE’s schedule records later 5.8 bug-fix releases through 5.8.9 in February 2018; KDE also published a 5.8.8 release page: Plasma 5 schedule and Plasma 5.8.8 release information. The named Kubuntu and Mint releases are legacy systems, and the old PPA should not be used as a present-day installation path. On a modern system, use the Plasma version supplied by the distribution or choose a current KDE-focused distribution if you want a newer Plasma desktop.
