“Audio delay” on Twitch can mean four different things: the whole broadcast reaches viewers late, audio is out of sync with video, the streamer hears delayed monitoring, or playback is buffering. Test from a second device before changing settings. An OBS audio offset fixes a source’s timing relative to video; it does not remove Twitch’s normal end-to-end latency.
Identify which delay you have
| What you notice | Who experiences it | Likely category | First action |
|---|---|---|---|
| The entire stream is behind the live action | Viewers | Normal Twitch latency, playback buffering, or an intentional stream delay | Check Low Latency mode and whether Stream Delay is enabled |
| Speech, game sound, or alerts do not match the picture | Viewers, and often a local recording | Audio/video desynchronization | Measure the offset, then adjust the affected source |
| Your own voice or game sounds late in headphones | Streamer | Monitoring-path delay or double monitoring | Use only one monitoring path and verify the encoded output |
| Playback pauses, loads, or becomes uneven | Viewers | Connection, ingest, encoder, or viewer-device problem | Check OBS statistics and Twitch Inspector |
Twitch says every stream has some inherent delay and recommends Low Latency mode to minimize it; it does not automatically add a deliberate delay. The amount varies with playback mode, viewer network and device, ingest path, encoding, and buffering. Twitch Partners can configure native Stream Manager delay of up to 15 minutes. See Twitch’s stream-delay guide.
Test sync from the viewer’s perspective
- Start a short private or low-risk test stream.
- Watch it on a phone or another computer, not only in OBS. Twitch recommends this approach for checking synchronization: Twitch’s OBS synchronization guidance.
- Clap in front of the webcam, or tap a visible object while making a sharp sound.
- Compare the sound’s arrival with the visible movement. Ask a trusted viewer to confirm if possible.
- Make a local OBS recording of the same test and compare it with the Twitch playback.
- Repeat after 30–60 seconds. A constant offset suggests a fixed delay; an offset that grows suggests drift or buffering.
OBS monitoring is not guaranteed to reproduce the timing of the encoded Twitch output. A local recording isolates much of the OBS chain, but a correct recording does not rule out Twitch ingest, network, or viewer playback causes.
Fix a constant audio/video offset in OBS
When audio is early
In OBS, open Audio Mixer → gear icon → Advanced Audio Properties. Find the microphone, game, capture-card, or other affected source and enter a positive value in Sync Offset (ms) to delay that source. Twitch documents this workflow at Twitch Sports: Getting Started. Test a new recording or stream after each change; there is no universal correct millisecond value.

When audio is late
Reduce or remove an existing audio offset. If the video source is the part arriving late, delay the video instead of continually delaying audio.
When video is late
For a game or video source, right-click it, choose Filters, add the appropriate Render Delay filter, and set the measured delay. Filter availability and labels vary by source type, OBS release, and operating system. A capture device may expose different controls.
- Audio before matching picture: add positive audio Sync Offset.
- Audio after matching picture: remove audio delay or delay video.
- Capture hardware delays video: compensate the corresponding audio or use video Render Delay.
- Only headphones are delayed: fix monitoring, not the stream offset.
Capture cards, consoles, and separate signal paths
A console may send video and audio through a capture card, while game sound is captured separately through desktop audio or a mixer. A capture card can delay video while a separately routed audio signal remains immediate. Webcam video, microphone processing, and browser alerts can also travel through different paths.

Identify which signal is late before compensating. Directly monitoring the console or interface can be earlier than what viewers receive, so judge the result with the second-device test or encoded recording. If only one scene or source is affected, inspect that source’s filters, routing, and capture settings rather than changing every audio channel.
Remove monitoring delay and echo
OBS plays monitored sources through the configured monitoring device; that path can have its own buffer or clock. The OBS Audio Mixer Guide explains the monitoring controls.
- Turn off either direct hardware monitoring or OBS monitoring so only one path is audible.
- Use wired headphones while diagnosing wireless or Bluetooth latency.
- Toggle a source’s monitoring state off and on if its buffer appears stuck.
- Do not judge Twitch sync from headphones alone; use a recording or second-device playback.
An echo usually means the same source is audible through both direct and OBS monitoring. If timing gets progressively worse, inspect sample rates, virtual cables, wireless devices, and monitoring buffers. Community discussion of possible clock and buffer behavior is available in the OBS forum; treat it as technical community guidance, not a formal guarantee.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
Audio filters, plug-ins, and virtual devices
Noise suppression, compressors, limiters, VST plug-ins, software mixers, virtual cables, and wireless headsets can add fixed or variable latency. Twitch specifically notes that audio-processing software may require compensation.
- Disable third-party filters temporarily.
- Test the microphone through a direct input.
- Remove unnecessary virtual routing.
- Compare wired and wireless monitoring.
- Re-enable filters one at a time and measure again.
Do not assume a particular plug-in or device is always responsible; isolate the chain one component at a time.

Pauses, loading indicators, frozen video, or uneven playback are not normally fixed by Sync Offset. Check OBS statistics for dropped frames, encoder overload, or disconnects. OBS recommends trying another ingest server, lowering bitrate, and checking VPNs, firewalls, antivirus, and network-prioritization software in its Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide. Its suggestion to use 75% of total upload speed is a starting point, not a universal Twitch requirement.

Lowering bitrate can improve stability at the cost of image quality; it does not repair a fixed microphone-to-video offset. Use Twitch Inspector while broadcasting for connection and encoder diagnostics. Enhanced Broadcasting compatibility depends on software and version; Twitch’s current documentation describes support requirements at Enhanced Broadcasting with Multiple Encodes.

| Symptom | Likely category | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Same offset throughout the test | Fixed capture or processing delay | Adjust Sync Offset or Render Delay |
| Starts synchronized, then becomes increasingly late | Clock, device, virtual-routing, or buffer drift | Isolate monitoring devices, sample rates, plug-ins, and virtual cables |
| Only Twitch playback is late as a whole | Platform latency or added stream delay | Check Low Latency mode and Stream Delay |
| Video freezes while audio continues | Buffering, dropped frames, or playback trouble | Check OBS connection statistics and viewer device |
| Live is correct but VOD is wrong | Track routing or VOD configuration | Inspect Twitch VOD Track settings |
| Streamer hears an echo but viewers do not | Double monitoring | Disable one monitoring path |
A fixed offset is not a dependable cure for drift. Restore defaults and isolate the underlying device or processing path when the measured delay changes over time.
Why a Twitch VOD can sound different
OBS can send separate audio feeds to the live broadcast and Twitch VOD. With Twitch VOD Track enabled, OBS commonly uses track 1 for live and track 2 for VOD; assignments are controlled in Advanced Audio Properties. The OBS Twitch VOD Track Guide documents the feature.

These symptoms usually indicate track selection, not a Twitch timing offset. Check each source’s selected tracks, mute state, and routing.
Stream Delay is not Audio Sync Offset
Stream Delay buffers the entire broadcast for privacy or anti-stream-sniping purposes and can harm real-time chat. Broadcast-software delay consumes memory because video is buffered; changing it generally requires stopping and restarting the stream. Twitch-native delay is identified as a Partner feature in its support documentation.
Audio Sync Offset changes one source’s timing relative to encoded video. Use it for microphone, game, or capture-card desynchronization. Neither setting removes the ordinary delay between a live event and its Twitch playback.
When to stop changing offsets
- The offset keeps changing rather than staying constant.
- The issue occurs only in your headphones.
- Only one viewer reports it while others are synchronized.
- The stream buffers instead of showing a stable offset.
- The local recording is correct.
At that point, return offsets to sensible defaults and investigate monitoring, routing, capture hardware, Twitch playback, or network stability.
