It was Arne Exton’s paid AndEX/Exton remaster of Android-x86 KitKat 4.4.4, announced on February 14, 2016 as build 160214 or version 9. Its defining changes were a custom 4.4.0-exton-android-x86 kernel, Mesa 10.5.9, bundled Google applications and a claim of improved Bluetooth support.
What exactly was released?
The long phrase “Custom Android-x86 KitKat 4.4.4 Live CD with Linux Kernel 4.4 and New Mesa” describes Exton’s ISO-based Android build. The same release appears under several names:
- Android-x86 KitKat 4.4.4 Exton build 160214
- Exton version 9
- AndEX/Android-x86 KitKat 4.4.4
- Kernel label:
4.4.0-exton-android-x86
Exton announced it on February 14, 2016. Contemporary coverage used the “Live CD” wording, but the image could also be written to a USB stick.
Android-x86 versus AndEX/Exton
Android-x86 is the upstream open-source project that adapts Android for x86 PCs. AndEX/Exton builds are customized remasters produced by Arne Exton. Version 9 used Android-x86 KitKat as its base, but it was not the same binary as the upstream Android-x86 4.4-r4 release.

That distinction matters because the official Android-x86 4.4-r4 notes identify Linux kernel 4.0.9. Exton’s image replaced that with its own 4.4.0-exton-android-x86 kernel and bundled software.
What changed in version 9?
| Component | Earlier Exton build (160125/version 8) | Version 9 (160214) |
|---|---|---|
| Android base | KitKat 4.4.4 | KitKat 4.4.4 |
| Kernel | 4.0.9-based | 4.4.0-exton-android-x86 |
| Mesa | 10.5.9 | 10.5.9 |
| Bluetooth | Earlier build had weaker or problematic support | Advertised by Exton as working |
| Google applications | Included | Included |
| Build identifier | 160125/version 8 | 160214/version 9 |
The headline upgrade was therefore the kernel, not a newer Android generation. Exton also presented Bluetooth support and graphics improvements as practical benefits.
What “new Mesa” means
Mesa is the open-source Linux graphics stack used for OpenGL and related acceleration. This image shipped Mesa 10.5.9. That was a contemporary component in 2016, but it is obsolete today. The same Mesa version is mentioned in the upstream Android-x86 4.4-r3 notes, so it was not necessarily unique to Exton’s remaster.

Mesa 10.5.9 could help graphics compatibility on some hardware, but it did not guarantee faster performance. Results depended on the GPU, available driver, firmware and whether Android-x86 could use hardware acceleration.
Bundled applications
The remaster included GAPPS, including Google Play Services, Google Play Store, Google Maps and YouTube, plus Aptoide App Manager, according to Exton’s announcement. Those were bundled components of the 2016 image—not a promise that modern Google services or current apps would still function.
How the Live CD/USB worked
“Live CD” meant a bootable ISO that could start Android without immediately installing it to the internal disk. The same image could be placed on USB media, allowing a safer compatibility test before installation.

The upstream Android-x86 4.4-r4 documentation gives this USB-writing example:
dd if=android-x86-4.4-r4.iso of=/dev/sdXThis is only the upstream project’s example, not a verified command for the Exton ISO. Replace /dev/sdX with the correct removable drive; choosing the wrong device can overwrite an entire disk. Back up data and verify the target device before using dd.

Safer test sequence
- Use a disposable USB drive or spare computer.
- Boot the ISO and check display, keyboard, storage, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and audio.
- Test the applications you actually need.
- Only then consider a hard-drive installation, after recording the existing boot configuration and making a full backup.
Hardware compatibility: intended systems and limits
Exton listed Acer, HP, Samsung, Dell, Toshiba, Lenovo/ThinkPad, Fujitsu, Panasonic and Asus systems, and reported successful use on an Acer Aspire 5102WLMi and an HP Pavilion 500 desktop. These are the developer’s examples, not an independent compatibility matrix. An archived build directory still lists the image at raspis.eu.

Upstream Android-x86 4.4-r4 documented legacy BIOS and UEFI boot support, improved peripheral support, possible suspend/resume problems, an installer limitation involving ext3 formatting and a 4GB VFAT filesystem limit. Those notes describe the upstream release and should not automatically be treated as verified behavior of Exton’s remaster.
Bluetooth is not universal
“Bluetooth working” was Exton’s release claim. Adapter support can differ between an integrated laptop radio and a USB chipset. Check discovery, pairing, HID keyboards or mice, audio profiles and connection stability separately.
Graphics and boot problems
A black screen can result from an incompatible graphics mode, unsupported acceleration or a kernel/firmware mismatch. Try the boot menu’s compatibility graphics options, test another computer and avoid installing until the live environment initializes reliably.

Apps, Google services and Android 4.4 limits
Android 4.4.4 corresponds to API level 19. Many current applications require newer Android versions, modern TLS or certificate handling, Google components that no longer support KitKat, or ARM-only native libraries. Other apps expect a touchscreen, GPS, camera, sensors or telephony hardware that a PC may lack.
Consequently, a Play Store icon does not mean present-day Play Store compatibility. Sign-in, downloads and server communication may fail even when GAPPS is preinstalled. Treat the image as an offline or experimental system rather than a current app platform.
Historical price and availability
Contemporary coverage reported a new-user price of approximately $9/€8; existing purchasers were reported to receive version 9 as a free update. That was a 2016 price, not a verified 2026 offer.
The mirror listing and an Exton archive reference make the build historically discoverable, but they do not establish an active storefront, supported download service, checksum, signature, licensing status or vendor security updates. As of August 18, 2026, it is best treated as an archived legacy build.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWho should use it now?
- Reasonable use: retrocomputing, software preservation, isolated experimentation and a narrow offline task on spare hardware.
- Poor fit: banking, everyday web browsing, sensitive accounts, modern games, current productivity apps or any workload requiring security updates.
A newer maintained Android-on-PC project, official upstream release, conventional lightweight Linux distribution with Android emulation, current emulator or supported desktop operating system is generally a better choice when security and application compatibility matter. The appropriate alternative depends on the reader’s hardware and goal.
Installation and recovery warnings
- Back up the internal drive before changing partitions or boot entries.
- Prefer removable media and a spare machine for first tests.
- Verify disk and partition names before writing an image or installing.
- Do not assume dual-boot installation is risk-free; preserve the original boot configuration.
- If the ISO cannot be cryptographically verified, acknowledge that limitation rather than assuming the archive is authentic.
The Bottom Line
Exton build 160214/version 9 was a 2016 custom Android-x86 KitKat remaster: Android 4.4.4 stayed the same, while the kernel changed to 4.4.0-exton-android-x86 and the image added bundled GAPPS plus claimed Bluetooth improvements. It remains useful mainly as a historical or offline experiment, not as a secure modern PC operating system.
