When Group FaceTime will not start, join, or stay connected, first check Apple’s live System Status page, then test a one-to-one FaceTime call. That quickly separates an Apple-service problem from a participant, account, network, browser, or permission problem. Next verify supported software, FaceTime activation, internet access, VPN or filter settings, and camera and microphone permissions.
Identify the failure before changing settings

Check whether FaceTime is currently unavailable
Open Apple’s System Status page and find FaceTime. If Apple marks it as affected, wait and try again later. If FaceTime is listed as available, continue with device and participant troubleshooting; a local outage or account failure can occur while Apple’s service remains available.
Confirm Group FaceTime requirements
Apple’s FaceTime requirements document lists Group FaceTime support beginning with macOS 10.14.3 Supplemental Update and iOS 12.1.4, with iPadOS subject to Apple’s requirements and regional availability. Older hardware or software can support ordinary FaceTime without supporting every group feature. See Apple’s Group FaceTime requirements.
Apple’s current iPhone guide says a Group FaceTime call can include up to 32 people. Availability and features can vary by country or region, so do not treat the version minimum as a guarantee that every device behaves identically.

Direct calls and FaceTime links are different
- When everyone uses compatible Apple devices, start a direct Group FaceTime call.
- Android and Windows users cannot initiate a native FaceTime call. An iPhone, iPad, or Mac user must create a FaceTime link.
- FaceTime links are not supported in mainland China, and Apple says creating a link is not supported on iPhone models purchased in mainland China.
- Web participants cannot use SharePlay or screen sharing. That limitation is expected, not a connection failure.
Fix FaceTime activation on iPhone or iPad
- Open Settings > Apps > FaceTime. On older iOS or iPadOS versions, FaceTime may appear directly under Settings.
- Turn on FaceTime and check the Apple Account shown.
- Under the section showing where you can be reached, confirm the intended phone number or email address is selected.
- If activation is stuck, turn FaceTime off, restart the device, return to the same screen, and turn it on again.
- Verify internet access, install available software updates, set the correct date, time, and time zone, and complete any Apple Account verification request.
Apple’s activation guidance is available at FaceTime activation and sign-in troubleshooting. For persistent verification problems, check the email address at account.apple.com.
Fix FaceTime sign-in and devices on Mac
- Open the FaceTime app.
- Choose FaceTime > Settings or FaceTime > Preferences, depending on macOS.
- Use the General section to sign out if the account is wrong or activation is stuck.
- Restart the Mac, reopen FaceTime, and sign in again.
- Install available macOS updates.
For camera or microphone problems, quit and reopen FaceTime, restart the Mac, and test the camera in Photo Booth. In FaceTime’s Video menu, select the correct camera and microphone when multiple devices are connected. Apple’s connection and device checks are documented at FaceTime troubleshooting on Mac.

Repair an Android or Windows FaceTime link
- Have an Apple-device host open FaceTime and create a new link.
- Send that link instead of repeatedly retrying a problematic call invitation.
- Open it in the latest Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge on a strong Wi-Fi or cellular connection.
- Enter a name and select Continue.
- Allow the browser to use the camera and microphone, then select Join.
- Wait for the host to admit you.
Apple’s browser requirements and limitations are listed at Join a FaceTime call on the web. If permissions were denied, open the browser’s site settings, allow camera and microphone access for the FaceTime page, reload it, and close other apps that may be using those devices.
Test the network before resetting anything
FaceTime needs a fast Wi-Fi or cellular data connection. Open another website or app on the affected device, switch between Wi-Fi and cellular data when possible, and try a different network. Stop large downloads, cloud backups, game updates, or heavy streaming while testing. Each participant should test independently; one person’s connection can be the only failure.

Isolate VPNs, filters, and managed networks
Apple says VPNs and security software can block network ports used by FaceTime. Temporarily disconnect a VPN and pause DNS filtering, parental-control software, firewall tools, or security apps solely as a diagnostic test. Re-enable them afterward. If the call works on cellular data or another Wi-Fi network but not on school, workplace, hotel, or public Wi-Fi, an administrator policy or network filter may be responsible.
Separate camera and microphone failures from call failures
- On a Mac, test the camera in Photo Booth or another camera app. If it fails there too, investigate system permissions, hardware, or a physical camera shutter.
- In FaceTime, choose the intended camera and microphone from the Video menu when several are attached.
- On Android or Windows, grant camera and microphone permission in Chrome or Edge, then reload the FaceTime page.
- Check hardware mute switches, close apps that may have exclusive access, and try joining audio-only if video is the only failing feature.
Check Screen Time and administrator restrictions
On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Screen Time and review Communication Limits, Downtime, Allowed Contacts, and related family restrictions. Labels vary by system version and Family Sharing setup. A parent, school, or workplace administrator may control these settings. Apple also documents Screen Time communication limits in its FaceTime guide.

When only one participant cannot join
If the host and other participants can call successfully, focus on the person who is missing. Confirm that person’s software or browser is current, FaceTime is enabled if using an Apple device, the selected contact method is correct, camera and microphone permissions are allowed, and the device works on another network without its VPN or filter. If the call fails only when that person joins, test the group without them and then troubleshoot their device separately.
Use this order for a complete repair
- Check Apple System Status.
- Test one-to-one FaceTime for the host and affected participant.
- Confirm supported software, regional availability, and no more than 32 participants.
- Test another network and temporarily isolate VPN or filtering software.
- Turn FaceTime off, restart the device, and turn it back on.
- Update iOS, iPadOS, macOS, Chrome, or Edge.
- Check date, time, Apple Account verification, contact methods, and camera or microphone permissions.
- Create a fresh link for Android or Windows users.
- Review Screen Time and managed-device policies.
When to contact Apple Support
Contact Apple Support if the problem remains after trying another network, updating, restarting, reactivating FaceTime, checking account verification and permissions, and testing a new link. Provide the device model; iOS, iPadOS, macOS, Chrome, or Edge version; region and approximate failure time; exact error text; whether one-to-one calls work; whether another network changes the result; and whether a VPN, filter, or managed profile is installed.
