If Search will not open, first try the correct gesture; if it opens but misses an app or its contents, check that app’s Search settings and sync status before trying more disruptive fixes. There is no user-facing “reindex now” command in Apple’s current iPhone and iPad Search guides.
First, identify what is failing
Search can fail in different ways, and the distinction points to the right fix. Try these queries in order: Settings or Calculator, the name of the affected app, and a distinctive word from a recent note or message you know is on the device.
- Search will not open: The gesture does nothing, the Search button is missing, or the interface freezes. Start with the opening gesture below, then restart the device.
- Built-in apps do not appear: The problem is likely broader than one app. Restart and update iOS or iPadOS before considering a settings reset.
- Built-in apps appear but one app does not: Check that app’s visibility, Search permissions, and hidden-app status.
- The app appears but its messages, notes, mail, or files do not: Check the content setting and whether the data is present and synchronized in the app.
- Older items appear but recent ones do not: The app may not have downloaded or synchronized the newer data yet.
- Local results work but web results or suggestions do not: Check connectivity and Siri-related suggestion settings separately; web suggestions are not the same as local device results.
Apple describes Search as able to surface apps, contacts, settings, webpages, and supported app content; the available results depend on the app and the data available on the device. See Apple’s iPhone Search guide and iPad Search guide.
Open Search with the right gesture
On iPhone
From the Home Screen or Lock Screen, swipe down from the middle of the screen. On supported Face ID iPhones, you may also see a Search button at the bottom of the Home Screen. Avoid swiping from the extreme top edge, which can open Notification Center or Control Center instead.

On iPad
From the Home Screen or Lock Screen, swipe down from the middle of the screen, then type in the Search field. Apple’s instructions are in its iPhone guide and iPad guide.
Turn the affected app back on in Search
If a particular app or its contents are missing, check the per-app controls before changing system settings.
- Open Settings > Search.
- Scroll to and tap the affected app.
- Turn on Show App in Search.
- If available, turn on Show Content in Search as well.
- Search for the app and a known item from its contents again.
Depending on the app and software version, the settings page may also offer controls for suggestions or displaying the app on the Home Screen. Not every app makes all of its data searchable. Apple lists the Search controls in its iPhone guide and iPad guide.

If the Search switches are already on
You can try toggling Show App in Search and Show Content in Search off, restarting, then turning them on again. This is a low-risk troubleshooting experiment, not an Apple-documented manual reindex procedure or a guaranteed fix.
Check whether the app is hidden
A hidden app does not appear in Search until it is shown again. Look for it in the App Library and check the hidden-app area if your software version has one. Apple explains this behavior in its Spotlight and Search support article.
Do not delete and reinstall the app as an early fix. Files, downloads, or other information stored only on the device may not be backed up or synchronized, so removing the app could put that data at risk.

Check the missing content and its sync status
Open the affected app directly. If the missing item is not there either, the problem is with the data or its synchronization, not just system Search. If it is present, try the app’s own search field to see whether the app can find it.
- Confirm the app is signed in to the right account and check its sync status.
- Check that the relevant app is enabled in your iCloud settings if it uses iCloud.
- Connect to Wi-Fi and, if syncing is still underway, leave the device connected to power for a while.
- Search again after the item is available in the app on the device.
Apple notes that results can be limited by how far back an app has synchronized with iCloud. This does not mean all local Search results need internet access: local results and web-based suggestions are separate cases. See Apple’s Search support article.

Restart the iPhone or iPad
Try a normal shutdown and restart first; the exact button sequence for turning a device off varies by model. A force restart is for a device that is frozen or will not respond, not a routine way to rebuild Search.

If the device is frozen: force restart
- iPhone 8 or later: Quickly press and release Volume Up, quickly press and release Volume Down, then press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears.
- iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus: Hold the Side button and Volume Down together until the Apple logo appears.
- iPhone 6s or earlier: Hold the Side/Top button and Home button together until the Apple logo appears.
- iPad without a Home button: Quickly press and release the volume button closest to the Top button, quickly press and release the other volume button, then hold the Top button until the Apple logo appears.
- iPad with a Home button: Hold the Top button and Home button together until the Apple logo appears.
Apple’s restart and recovery guidance covers these combinations.
Install an available iOS or iPadOS update
- Open Settings > General > Software Update.
- If an update is available for your device, follow the onscreen instructions to install it.
- Restart if prompted, then test Search with a built-in app and the affected app.
The update offered depends on the device and date; there is no single version number that applies to every iPhone and iPad. Apple’s current Search guides reflect the iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 interface, but use the update your device offers.

If local app results work but Siri recommendations, location-based suggestions, or web results are missing, review the relevant settings. Apple documents location-based suggestions under Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > System Services > Suggestions & Search. Siri controls may appear under Apple Intelligence & Siri or Siri, depending on software, device, language, and region.

Apple’s Siri troubleshooting guide says that a VPN profile may prevent Siri from being used if Siri settings do not appear after a restart. Treat that as a Siri-specific possibility, not a general explanation for every Search problem.
Reset All Settings only if the problem is system-wide
If Search is still failing across multiple apps after a restart and update, Reset All Settings is a later-stage option. It does not erase photos, messages, apps, documents, or other personal media, but it resets many preferences and connections, including saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords, Bluetooth pairings, Apple Pay cards, privacy and location settings, keyboard dictionary, VPN configurations, accessibility and notification settings, and Face ID or Touch ID settings.
- Open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone or Transfer or Reset iPad.
- Tap Reset.
- Tap Reset All Settings and confirm.
Back up first, particularly if the device has important local data, a managed profile, or an unusual configuration. This is not the same as Erase All Content and Settings, which deletes the device’s data. Apple’s explanations are in Reset All Settings on iPhone or iPad and Reset iPhone settings to their defaults.
Recovery mode and factory restore are last resorts
Use recovery-mode repair for a broader or more severe problem, such as a device stuck on the Apple logo or repeatedly freezing, or when Apple Support recommends it. If a computer offers Update or Restore, Apple says to choose Update when the goal is to reinstall iOS or iPadOS while keeping personal data where possible. See Apple’s recovery guidance.
A factory restore erases the device and installs the current operating system. It requires a reliable backup and should not be treated as an ordinary Search fix. Apple’s factory-restore instructions explain the process.
When to contact Apple Support
Contact Apple Support if Search still will not open, built-in apps remain absent, or Search fails across apps after the basic checks, restart, update, and—if appropriate—Reset All Settings. Seek help sooner if other system features are failing, the device is freezing or restarting, or it displays a recovery screen. If the iPhone or iPad belongs to a school or employer, ask its administrator about restrictions or management settings before changing them.
