A generic “Service Error” or “Something went wrong” message on HBO Max (formerly Max) is a failure notice, not a diagnosis. It can come from the service, one movie or episode, your app, browser, device, home network, account session, or a 4K display connection. Use the tests below to identify which scope is affected before reinstalling apps, changing plans, or buying equipment. During the current name transition, your app or help page may still be labeled “Max”; HBO says the account, profiles, settings, programming, plans and pricing remain the same. Try these low-risk fixes first
- Force-close HBO Max and reopen it. On a computer, close and reopen the browser.
- Play another movie or episode. If only one title fails, the problem may be title-specific.
- Test another device, such as a phone on the same Wi-Fi network.
- Update the HBO Max app, browser and device software.
- Sign out, power off the device, wait 30 seconds, restart it, then sign in again.
- Restart your modem and router if the error affects devices on the same network.
- Save the exact wording and any error code before contacting support.

Find the likely cause in one minute

A television can show that it is connected to Wi-Fi while still being unable to reach HBO Max’s servers. Conversely, a single failed title does not prove that HBO Max is down.
Device-specific fixes
Android phone or tablet
- Update HBO Max in Google Play and install available Android updates.
- Open Settings, select the HBO Max app, choose Storage & cache (or Storage), and tap Clear cache.
- Force-stop the app and reopen it.
- If necessary, use Clear storage or Clear data. This resets local app data, removes downloads or saved settings and signs you out.
- Reinstall HBO Max from Google Play if the error remains.

iPhone or iPad
- Update HBO Max in the App Store and update iOS or iPadOS.
- Force-close the app using the gesture or App Switcher method for your iPhone or iPad model, then reopen it.
- Restart the device and try another title.
- Delete and reinstall HBO Max if the app still fails. You will need to sign in again.
Computer browser
Use a current version of Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge for Windows or Safari. If playback fails:
- Try a different supported browser.
- Clear the browser cache and HBO Max cookies, then sign in again.
- Temporarily disable extensions and ad blockers. Re-enable them after testing.
- Allow third-party cookies if the sign-in or playback flow requires them.
- Check display-resolution limits if video fails only in full-screen mode.

Roku
- Highlight the HBO Max channel and press the remote’s Star button to check for updates.
- Restart Roku through its system settings. If needed, unplug it for about 20 seconds and reconnect it.
- Remove and reinstall the channel. HBO Max notes that a subscriber billed through Roku may be unable to remove the app while that subscription is active.
Amazon Fire TV
- Open HBO Max’s app information screen and install any available update.
- Update Fire TV at Settings > My Fire TV > About > Check for System Update.
- Restart Fire TV, check its network connection and reinstall HBO Max if required.
Android TV and Google TV
- Update HBO Max and the television’s operating system.
- For the device update path listed by HBO, use Settings > System > About > System update > Check for update. Manufacturer labels can differ.
- Open the app settings to clear cache, then data if necessary. Clearing data signs you out.
- Restart the television and reinstall the app if the problem persists. Ethernet can help isolate unstable Wi-Fi.
Apple TV
- Update HBO Max in the App Store.
- Update tvOS at Settings > System > Software Updates > Update Software.
- Sign out, then restart at Settings > System > Restart.
- Delete and reinstall HBO Max.
Other smart-TV and provider platforms

Check the network before upgrading it
- Confirm that other websites and streaming apps work.
- Run a speed test on the same network used by the affected device.
- Move the device nearer the router or connect it by Ethernet where possible.
- Pause large downloads, game updates and other high-bandwidth traffic.
- Temporarily disable a VPN or unusual DNS filtering as a diagnostic test.
- Unplug the modem and router for 30 seconds. Reconnect the modem first and wait about one minute for internet service, then reconnect the router.
HBO Max cites at least 5 Mbps for HD and recommends 50 Mbps or more for 4K. Those are service guidelines, not a guarantee: interference, congestion and connection stability can still cause playback errors. See HBO Max’s connection guidance and the restart sequence at its generic-error page.

When clearing cache, data or cookies helps
- Clear cache: removes temporary files and is usually the least disruptive option.
- Clear app data or storage: rebuilds the local app state but normally signs you out and removes local downloads or settings.
- Clear browser cookies: can sign you out of HBO Max and other websites.
- Disable extensions: useful for diagnosis when an ad blocker or privacy extension interferes; re-enable extensions after testing.
Controls and labels vary by device model and operating-system version.
If the error occurs during sign-in
Sign-in failures are different from playback failures. Sign out and try again, or use a private/incognito browser window. Try email-and-password sign-in instead of a TV code or QR method. If an “out of sync” message appears, check that the device’s date, time and time zone are correct. Reinstall the TV app if its sign-in flow remains stuck. Subscribers billed through a cable, mobile or other provider should confirm with that provider that HBO Max is included and active. HBO’s sign-in instructions are at help.max.com.

Separate device-setup and 4K HDMI errors from a service error
If the message mentions device setup, HDCP, HDMI or protected content, install HBO Max only from the device’s official app store. Check every cable, adapter, AV receiver, HDMI switch and display in the chain. For 4K UHD, HBO identifies HDCP 2.2 compliance as relevant. As a test, connect the streaming device directly to the TV, bypassing a receiver or switch. If HD works but 4K fails, the display chain or resolution capability may be the issue; lower the resolution only for this compatibility test. See HBO Max’s device-setup guidance.
When to contact HBO Max support
Contact support when the same error survives another device and network, one title consistently fails, valid credentials cannot authenticate, a specific code appears, an active subscription does not unlock content, or billing/provider entitlement is in question. Do not cancel and resubscribe or factory-reset equipment merely because a generic message appeared.

- Exact message and error code.
- Device model, operating-system version and HBO Max app or browser version.
- Title that failed and whether every title is affected.
- Whether another device or network worked.
