To uninstall a Snap from Ubuntu, run sudo snap remove <snap-name>. Find the exact name with snap list. A normal removal may create a recoverable Snap data snapshot; add --purge to skip creating a new one.
Before removing a Snap
First confirm the application is installed as a Snap. Snap packages and Debian packages managed by APT use different package managers. If snap list does not show the application, it may have been installed through APT, Flatpak, or another method.
For server software—such as a database, cluster component, VPN, or file-sharing service—follow the application’s shutdown or decommissioning instructions before uninstalling it. Removing a package is not necessarily the same as safely retiring the service. For example, Canonical’s Kubernetes Snap removal instructions require removing a node from the cluster first.
Find the Snap name
List installed Snaps:
snap list
Use the value in the Name column, not necessarily the application’s display name. For example, if the name is firefox, remove it with sudo snap remove firefox. The Version column identifies the application version; Rev is the Snap Store release revision. Snap’s getting-started guide explains the list output and basic removal.

If you need to inspect inactive revisions too, run:
snap list --all
An entry marked disabled is an old, inactive revision; it does not by itself mean that the active Snap remains installed. See Snap’s guide to managing Snap updates for revision details.
Remove the Snap from the terminal
-
Run the removal command with the Snap name:
sudo snap remove <snap-name>For example:
sudo snap remove vlc -
Enter your password if prompted. Snap may report
vlc removed; exact output and whether the command waits for completion can vary by Snapd version and operation. -
Verify the result with

Without a revision option, Snap removes the package and its installed revisions. Removal also deletes Snap-managed application data from its usual locations, though a snapshot may preserve a recoverable copy. It does not guarantee removal of every file the application may have created elsewhere.

Choose whether to create a removal snapshot
On ordinary Ubuntu Desktop and Server systems, a standard removal normally creates an automatic snapshot of Snap-managed data before uninstalling. Choose the command based on whether you value a recovery copy or avoiding a new snapshot:
| Choice | Command | When to use it | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard removal | sudo snap remove <snap-name> |
When you may want to restore Snap-managed data | Normally creates an automatic snapshot before removal. |
| Remove without a new snapshot | sudo snap remove <snap-name> --purge |
When you are sure you do not need that recovery copy or want to avoid its additional storage | Prevents a new automatic snapshot; it does not delete snapshots already saved. |
Canonical documentation describes automatic snapshots as retained for about 31 days, depending on the Snapd documentation and version. Ubuntu Core has different snapshot behavior, so do not assume the Desktop and Server defaults apply there. See the Snap snapshot guide and the Ubuntu Noble snap manpage for the documented options.
Remove a Snap in Ubuntu Desktop
For Ubuntu 26.04 Desktop, use App Center → Manage → select the application → Uninstall, then authenticate with your account password if asked. Ubuntu documents this route in its Ubuntu 26.04 application removal guide. Labels and navigation can differ in older releases; earlier Ubuntu help, for example, describes an Installed view and a Remove action.
Read the confirmation prompt before proceeding. App Center may warn that removing an application will also remove applications that depend on it. If both Snap and Debian versions are available, Ubuntu says the Snap is listed first. For headless Ubuntu Server systems or applications without a GUI, use the terminal.
Stop a running application or service first
Close the application before removal. For a Snap that runs services, inspect their status and stop the Snap if appropriate:

snap services <snap-name>
sudo snap stop <snap-name>
sudo snap remove <snap-name>
If Snap reports that a running process prevents removal, --terminate is available:
sudo snap remove <snap-name> --terminate
This terminates processes associated with the Snap before removing it. Treat it as a fallback: an abrupt stop can interrupt active work or connections. Option details are in the snap command manpage.

Snap-managed data can include system data under /var/snap/<snap-name>/ and per-user data under $HOME/snap/<snap-name>/. A snapshot covers Snapd-managed user, system, and configuration data, not necessarily all files an application created in other locations. Back up important application-specific data separately before removal.
List or create a snapshot

To create a manual snapshot before uninstalling, run:

sudo snap restore <set-id>
Delete a saved snapshot
After checking the set ID with snap saved, delete a snapshot set with:
sudo snap forget <set-id>
For example, sudo snap forget 31. Forgetting a snapshot is irreversible. The --purge removal option does not remove sets that were already saved. Instructions for listing, restoring, and deleting sets are in the Snap data-snapshot guide.
Verify that removal succeeded
Check the specific name:
snap list <snap-name>
If the Snap is gone, Snapd should report an error similar to error: no matching snaps installed. You can also run snap list to inspect what remains. If an old revision is the concern, use snap list --all and distinguish a disabled inactive revision from the active installation. Ubuntu’s Snap removal example also uses the specific-name check to verify uninstallation.
Troubleshoot common problems
“snap: command not found”
Snapd may not be installed, or the current environment may not expose the snap command. Do not try to remove a Snap through Snapd if the command is unavailable. Check whether the application was installed with APT, Flatpak, or another installer; the Snap getting-started guide points to installation information for supported distributions.
“no matching snaps installed”
Check for a misspelled name or a display name that differs from the Snap name, then inspect the installed list:

snap list
snap list --all
The package may already be removed, installed through another package manager, or represented only by an inactive revision.
The operation is pending or seems stuck
Snap operations can take time or be queued. Inspect changes and tasks rather than deleting Snapd directories:
snap changes
snap tasks <change-id>
The Snap command supports background operations; the manpage documents --no-wait, which returns while an operation continues, and the change-monitoring commands.
Settings return after reinstall, or disk space is still in use
A saved automatic or manual snapshot can preserve Snap-managed settings and data. Check snap saved; if you no longer need a set, remove it with sudo snap forget <set-id>. Other Snaps, package caches, files outside Snapd-managed locations, or a revision-only removal can also explain why expected space was not reclaimed. Do not manually delete /var/lib/snapd, /snap, or $HOME/snap as routine cleanup: these are managed locations, and manual deletion can damage Snapd state. The locations are documented in Canonical’s Snap data locations reference.

Do not remove Snapd to uninstall one application
Removing one Snap with snap remove is separate from removing Snapd itself. Removing Snapd is a system-wide decommissioning task that affects Snap functionality and can remove system Snap directories; it is not required to uninstall an individual application. If your goal is to remove Snap support entirely, follow Canonical’s separate Snap decommissioning procedure.
If the application is a Debian package rather than a Snap, use APT instead, for example sudo apt remove <package-name>. Use sudo apt purge <package-name> when you also want APT to remove package configuration. First identify the actual installation format rather than guessing from the application’s name.
