A disappearing Mac cursor is usually not one problem: it may be difficult to see, stuck in one app, sitting on another display, or unable to move because the mouse, trackpad, Bluetooth connection, or Mac has stopped responding. First, rapidly shake the mouse or move one finger quickly on the trackpad. If the pointer enlarges, it is present but hard to see. If it never appears or clicks do nothing, follow the input and display checks below.
First, identify what has failed
| What you observe | Most likely direction |
|---|---|
| The pointer appears when you move rapidly | Visibility or pointer-contrast problem |
| The pointer is visible but does not move | Mouse, trackpad, Bluetooth, cable, surface, or system problem |
| It disappears only in one app | The app may be busy or frozen |
| Clicks work but you cannot find the pointer | It may be on another monitor, Mac, or iPad |
| The Mac ignores both pointer movement and clicks | Check power, connections, restart, peripherals, and possible hardware failure |
Press a keyboard key and try Command-Tab. If other apps respond, macOS is running and the problem may be limited to the pointer, display routing, or one application.
Make a hidden pointer visible
macOS can briefly enlarge the pointer when you shake the mouse or move one finger rapidly on the trackpad. To keep that aid enabled, open Apple menu > System Settings > Accessibility > Display, scroll to Pointer, and turn on Shake mouse pointer to locate. You can also increase pointer size, change its outline and fill colors, or reset those colors. Apple documents these controls at Pointer settings and Display accessibility options. Older macOS versions call System Settings System Preferences, and their sidebar layout may differ.
Check another display, Mac, or iPad
With multiple monitors, move the pointer beyond every edge of the current screen. It may have crossed onto a monitor arranged above, below, or beside the visible one—or onto a display that is powered off. Open Apple menu > System Settings > Displays and arrange the screens to match their physical positions. Check power, video cables, adapters, dock connections, and the selected display input. On supported versions, hold Option in Displays settings to reveal Detect Displays. See Apple’s display guidance at https://support.apple.com/en-ca/102501.

- Magic Trackpad is wireless and rechargeable, and it includes the full range of Multi-Touch gestures and Force Touch technology.
- Sensors underneath the trackpad surface detect subtle differences in the amount of pressure you apply, bringing more functionality to your fingertips and enabling a deeper connection to your content.
- It features a large edge-to-edge glass surface area, making scrolling and swiping through your favourite content more productive and comfortable than ever.
- Magic Trackpad pairs automatically with your Mac, so you can get to work straightaway.
- The rechargeable battery will power it for about a month or more between charges.
Universal Control can move a pointer between a Mac and a nearby Mac or iPad. Move toward the left and right edges and check those devices. For a test, open System Settings > Displays > Advanced and turn off Allow your pointer and keyboard to move between any nearby Mac or iPad. Universal Control depends on compatible devices, the same Apple Account with two-factor authentication, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Handoff. Apple’s setup and troubleshooting details are at https://support.apple.com/en-us/102459.
If the pointer will not move
MacBook trackpad
- Move the pointer with one finger. Two fingers are for scrolling and other gestures.
- Connect the MacBook to power. A low-battery alert can be difficult to see when the pointer is unavailable.
- Try a known-good USB or Bluetooth mouse. If it works, the trackpad or its settings may need attention.

Magic Mouse or another Bluetooth mouse
- Turn the mouse off and on, then confirm it is charged or has fresh batteries.
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Bluetooth and confirm Bluetooth is enabled.
- If the mouse appears but will not connect, attach its compatible charging or pairing cable. Wait about one minute, then disconnect it for wireless use.
- If needed, remove or forget the device in Bluetooth settings and pair it again.
- Temporarily disconnect other Bluetooth devices if interference is plausible.
Some older battery-powered Apple mice may still be paired to another nearby Mac. Remove them from that Mac’s Bluetooth settings, then power-cycle the mouse. Apple’s pairing instructions are at https://support.apple.com/en-us/102498 and https://support.apple.com/en-ie/119917.
USB, wireless, or dock-connected mouse
- For a wired mouse, try another USB port and bypass the hub or dock.
- Turn the mouse over, inspect the optical sensor, and remove dust with compressed air (do not invert the can). Wipe with a suitable lint-free cloth.
- Test on a clean, opaque, non-reflective surface. Transparent, reflective, or dirty surfaces can cause slow or erratic tracking.
Cleaning addresses jittery, laggy, or slow tracking—not necessarily a completely invisible pointer. Apple’s sensor and interference advice is at https://support.apple.com/en-ie/105045.

When only one app is affected
Wait briefly in case the app is showing a loading or wait pointer, then press Command-Tab to test another app. If the pointer works elsewhere, quit and reopen the affected app. If it is unresponsive, choose Apple menu > Force Quit, select the app, and choose Force Quit. This can discard unsaved changes. Reopen the app, install its updates, and update macOS. If the problem began after adding an extension, plug-in, mouse driver, window manager, screen recorder, remote-control tool, or cursor utility, remove or update that software. See Apple’s app troubleshooting guidance at https://support.apple.com/en-la/102152 and https://support.apple.com/en-mide/guide/mac-help/mchlp2579/mac.
Restart, then update
Use Apple menu > Restart when the cursor disappeared system-wide, Bluetooth will not reconnect, the issue began after waking, or displays and Universal Control appear confused. If the Mac is completely unresponsive, hold its power button for about 10 seconds to shut it down, then press it again to start it. This forced shutdown can lose unsaved work and is not the preferred first step.

For recurring problems, open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update and install available macOS updates. Update the affected app separately; use a manufacturer’s utility only when the mouse requires its driver or firmware. An update may resolve a compatibility problem, but it is not guaranteed to fix every cursor failure.

- Disconnect recently added docks, hubs, external displays, adapters, and other peripherals.
- Leave only the display, keyboard, and the mouse or trackpad connected.
- Restart and test the pointer.
- Reconnect devices one at a time until the problem returns.
- Update or remove the driver or utility associated with the failing device.
This isolation method is recommended for unexpected system problems; Apple’s guidance is at https://support.apple.com/en-la/102382.

Use Safe Mode only for recurring or startup failures
Safe Mode is useful when the pointer problem returns after every restart, appears during startup or login, or began after installing a login item, extension, driver, or utility. If the pointer works in Safe Mode but fails during a normal startup, startup software is a strong lead; Safe Mode does not by itself prove a hardware fault. Apple-silicon and Intel Macs use different startup procedures, so follow the instructions for your Mac and macOS version at https://support.apple.com/en-ca/guide/mac-help/mchlp2889/mac rather than applying an Intel-only key combination universally.
When to arrange service
Contact Apple Support or an Apple Authorized Service Provider if a known-good mouse and the built-in trackpad both fail, the pointer fails before apps open or in Safe Mode, or the problem continues after restarting, updating, reconnecting, and isolating peripherals. Arrange prompt service for a swollen, raised, cracked, or difficult-to-click trackpad, a mouse that will not power on after charging or battery replacement, or any liquid or physical damage. Apple cautions that untrained repairs and nongenuine parts can affect safety and functionality; see https://support.apple.com/en-mide/guide/mac-help/mchlp2857/mac.
Quick Recap
Quick decision tree
- It appears when shaken: increase pointer size or contrast in Accessibility > Display > Pointer.
- It is on another screen: correct the display arrangement or disable Universal Control temporarily.
- The mouse does not move: charge or power-cycle it, reconnect Bluetooth or USB, clean the sensor, and test another surface or device.
- Only one app is affected: switch apps, quit and reopen it, then update it; force-quit only after protecting unsaved work.
- All input devices fail: restart, update, isolate peripherals, and seek service if the failure persists.
