First identify whether every upload fails, only one file fails, the attachment picker cannot see your files, or the problem is limited to Status or WhatsApp Web. Test a text message and a new small photo, switch between Wi‑Fi and mobile data, check permissions and free storage, then repair the individual file. Do not clear WhatsApp data or uninstall it until you have verified a current chat backup.
Identify the failure before changing settings

Run a two-minute isolation test
- Send a normal text message.
- Take a new, small photo and send it.
- Send the problem file to another chat.
- Try Wi‑Fi, then mobile data (or mobile data, then Wi‑Fi).
- If possible, test WhatsApp Web or another device.
If text and the new photo both fail, investigate connectivity, permissions, storage, the app or a possible service-side problem. If text works and only one file fails, concentrate on that file. If the phone works but Web does not, troubleshoot the browser or linked session rather than reinstalling the phone app.
Check the connection and phone restrictions
- Turn Wi‑Fi off and test mobile data, then reverse the test.
- Move closer to the router or restart it if only Wi‑Fi fails. Captive portals and workplace, school, hotel or public-network filters can block uploads.
- Temporarily disable a VPN, proxy, private DNS, firewall or traffic-filtering app as a diagnostic test. Restore it afterward if it is not the cause.
- Temporarily turn off Data Saver, Low Data Mode or other restrictive background-data settings.
- Keep WhatsApp open until a large upload completes, then retry with a small photo.
A connection that loads web pages can still interrupt a sustained media upload. If uploads fail only on mobile data, check WhatsApp’s cellular-data permission and carrier restrictions. If they fail only on Wi‑Fi, compare with mobile data before changing the app.
Restore WhatsApp permissions
Android
- Open Settings → Apps (or Apps & notifications) → WhatsApp → Permissions.
- Allow Photos and videos, Camera, and Music and audio where your phone presents those options.
- On newer Android versions, change Selected photos to broader access or add the missing images.
- Reopen WhatsApp and test again.
Names vary by manufacturer and Android edition. Android permissions can control whether an app can access photos and videos; see Google’s permission guidance.

iPhone
- Open Settings → Privacy & Security → Photos → WhatsApp.
- Choose Full Access, or add the specific photos WhatsApp needs.
- Return to Privacy & Security and check Camera if taking a picture inside WhatsApp fails.
- Reopen WhatsApp.
Exact labels vary by iOS release. Apple explains how to control camera and other hardware permissions in its iPhone privacy guide. A managed work phone, parental-control setting or privacy utility may prevent you from changing access.
Check free storage before retrying
WhatsApp may need temporary space to process, cache or save a copy, so having room for the original file is not always enough.

- Note: Make sure your smartphone is equipped with OTG function and need to open OTG function in Settings when you plug memory stick, then you can transfer easily data bewteen different devices
- Check free space in the phone’s system settings.
- Where available, open WhatsApp → Settings → Storage and data → Manage storage.
- Remove unnecessary large videos, duplicates or forwarded media and empty the operating system’s trash or Recently Deleted area.
- Retry with a small file.
WhatsApp’s storage manager can remove media while retaining chat history, but availability and labels depend on the app version and rollout. Meta describes these improvements in its March 2026 announcement. Deleting a WhatsApp copy is not necessarily the same as deleting the original in Photos or Files; confirm which copy you are removing.
Repair a single photo, video, document or voice note
Photos and documents
- Send another file from the same folder to determine whether the folder or one file is affected.
- Open the problem file outside WhatsApp. If it will not open, obtain it again.
- If it came from iCloud Photos, Google Photos, OneDrive or another cloud service, download the original to the device first.
- Save or export a new local copy, use a simple filename, and remove unusual characters.
- For an original-quality image, use Document when that option is offered.
Videos
- Trim a short section and send it.
- Export it again from the phone’s editor; reduce resolution or frame rate if it is unusually large.
- Confirm the complete video is downloaded locally and try attaching it from both Gallery and Files.
- Do not apply a universal size or codec rule to consumer WhatsApp. Limits differ by feature and client. Meta’s H.264/AAC and media-size requirements at the WhatsApp Business Platform Cloud API are API requirements, not automatic limits for the consumer app.
Voice notes
If photos send but voice notes do not, check microphone permission, available storage and whether another recording app can save audio. A newly recorded short note distinguishes a recording problem from a problem with an existing audio file.

When WhatsApp Status will not upload
Status processing can behave differently from ordinary chat attachments. Test a short clip or newly exported photo first. If that works, trim the original, reduce its resolution, or export a fresh copy. If chats and Status both fail across Wi‑Fi and mobile data, return to the connection, permission, storage and service-side checks instead of assuming a Status-only limit.
Fix WhatsApp Web or desktop uploads
- Refresh the page, then log out and relink the device.
- Try a private browser window and another supported browser.
- Disable extensions that inspect, block or rewrite uploads.
- Accept browser prompts for file or camera access.
- Try the official desktop application.
- Attach a file already stored locally instead of one opened from a cloud drive.
A Web-only failure does not prove that the phone installation or the file is defective.

Platform-specific recovery steps
Android: clear cache, not app data
- Open Settings → Apps → WhatsApp → Storage.
- Tap Clear cache, then reopen WhatsApp.
Labels differ by manufacturer. Do not choose Clear storage or Clear data as a routine test; that can require verification and backup restoration. Do not manually delete WhatsApp folders.
iPhone: verify local files and backup first
- Confirm Photos and Camera access, free iPhone storage, and that cloud media is downloaded.
- Restart the iPhone.
- Use Offload App only after understanding that it differs from deleting the app and after checking your backup.
Never delete WhatsApp or clear app data until you have verified a current backup and understand what it contains. A backup may restore messages without restoring every attachment that was never included or is no longer available locally.

When the problem may be on WhatsApp’s side
A service-side issue becomes more plausible when several media types fail in multiple chats, both Wi‑Fi and mobile data fail, and a second device shows the same behavior. Text messaging may continue while media infrastructure is impaired. Without a current incident confirmation, describe this as a possibility rather than a confirmed outage; wait and retry later while preserving your files and backup.

Contact WhatsApp through its in-app help route after recording your phone model, operating-system version, WhatsApp version and exact error. Avoid third-party “repair” tools that request your chats, media, verification code or backup-encryption key.
