Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf ordinary calls to your iPhone do not ring on your Mac, first check that Calls from iPhone is enabled in FaceTime on the Mac and that the Mac is enabled under Calls on Other Devices on the iPhone. Then check the Apple Account and phone number used by FaceTime. If a call banner appears but makes no sound, focus on volume, audio output, ringtone, notifications, and Focus instead.
This guide covers regular calls to your iPhone number, not just FaceTime audio or video calls. Menu names can vary: iOS 18 and later puts Phone settings under Settings > Apps > Phone, while iOS 17 and earlier uses Settings > Phone. On macOS Tahoe 26 or later, the Phone app may also be available; FaceTime remains a place to check the calling setup.
First, identify what is failing
Separate a call that never reaches the Mac from one that appears on screen without ringing. The distinction helps avoid changing account settings when the problem is simply sound or notifications.
- No incoming-call notice: Check the iPhone and Mac call settings, Apple Account, FaceTime sign-in and phone number, Wi-Fi, and carrier support.
- A notice appears, but there is no sound: Check Mac volume and output, ringtone, notification permissions, and Focus.
- Only some callers or one phone line fail: Check caller filtering, blocked numbers, carrier spam filtering, and dual-SIM settings.
- It stopped after an update, account change, or router move: Recheck sign-in and call settings, then test the network and restart both devices.
Calls to an iPhone number are cellular calls relayed to the Mac through Apple’s calling features. FaceTime audio and video calls are separate. A Mac can receive relayed iPhone calls through the FaceTime setup without the FaceTime app being open, provided the devices and account are configured correctly (Apple’s guide to making and receiving calls on Mac).

For the conventional setup, Apple lists an iPhone with iOS 8 or later, an internet connection, the same Apple Account on both devices, and FaceTime enabled. The standard arrangement uses the same Wi-Fi network; Wi-Fi Calling for other devices can allow a broader arrangement with a participating carrier. See Apple’s FaceTime requirements.

Enable the Mac on the iPhone
- On iOS 18 or later, open Settings > Apps > Phone. On iOS 17 or earlier, open Settings > Phone.
- Tap Calls on Other Devices, then turn on Allow Calls on Other Devices.
- Make sure the Mac is switched on in the device list. If it is missing, check the account, FaceTime, Wi-Fi Calling, software updates, and carrier support before trying again.
- If available and needed, enable Add Wi-Fi Calling For Other Devices. This carrier-dependent option can allow calls when the iPhone is off or on another Wi-Fi network.
Some iPhone settings also include Wi-Fi Calling. If your carrier offers it, open that setting and turn on Wi-Fi Calling on This iPhone. Exact availability and behavior depend on the carrier and region. Apple’s Wi-Fi Calling setup and troubleshooting guide explains the carrier-dependent options.
Enable iPhone calls on the Mac
- Open FaceTime on the Mac.
- Choose FaceTime > Settings, then click General.
- Select Calls from iPhone. If an Upgrade to Wi-Fi Calling button appears, follow its on-screen instructions.
If the option is missing, verify that FaceTime is signed in and revisit the iPhone’s device list. Apple’s current setup instructions are in its guide to making and receiving iPhone calls on Mac.
On macOS Tahoe 26 or later, the Phone app may be available for Mac calls. It is not a universal requirement: the interface depends on macOS, and FaceTime settings remain relevant. Apple describes the newer app in its overview of phone calls on Mac and Phone app calling guide.

Check the Apple Account, FaceTime, and phone number
The iPhone and Mac need to use the same Apple Account for this setup. FaceTime must be enabled and signed in on both, and the iPhone’s number must be selected in FaceTime’s contact and caller ID settings. If FaceTime on the Mac is signed into a different account, sign out of FaceTime there and sign in with the iPhone’s account. You do not need to start by signing out of iCloud across the whole device.
Apple identifies the matching account and selected phone number as setup requirements in its overview of iPhone calls on Mac. If the phone number is not offered in FaceTime on the iPhone, first check the iPhone’s cellular service and FaceTime activation.
Check Wi-Fi Calling and the network
In the basic continuity setup, the iPhone and Mac should be on the same Wi-Fi network and connected to the internet. Do not treat that as an absolute rule for every carrier setup: Wi-Fi Calling for other devices may permit calls when the iPhone is off or connected elsewhere, but carrier, device, software, and regional support vary.

- Turn Wi-Fi off and back on on both devices, then connect them to the same ordinary network for a test.
- If one device is on a guest network, a work or school network, or a mesh network with device isolation, try a different network. Devices can show the same network name without having the local connectivity the feature needs.
- If you use a VPN, temporarily disconnect it to test whether it is interfering with continuity.
- If Wi-Fi Calling is unreliable, try another Wi-Fi network. Apple notes that not all Wi-Fi networks work with Wi-Fi Calling in its troubleshooting guide.
If the Mac rings only when the iPhone is nearby or on the same network, that points toward the basic continuity setup. Calls when the iPhone is off or on another network depend on the additional Wi-Fi Calling option and a carrier that supports it.
Fix calls that appear without a ringtone
If the incoming-call banner is visible, start with sound and notification settings rather than repeating account setup.
Check volume, output, and ringtone
- Raise the Mac’s volume and confirm it is not muted.
- Check the selected sound output. Audio may be routed to AirPods, a monitor, a dock, or another Bluetooth device; test the built-in speakers or intended output.
- In FaceTime, open FaceTime > Settings > General > Ringtone and select a tone.
- If you use the Phone app, open Phone > Settings > General and check its ringtone setting.
Apple documents the FaceTime ringtone control in its FaceTime settings guide and the Phone app control in its Phone settings guide. A ringtone preview cannot be heard while the Mac is muted or sending sound to another output.
Allow notifications
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Notifications.
- Select FaceTime and turn on Allow notifications. Choose an alert style that is easy to notice.
- If the Phone app appears in the list, check its notification settings too.
FaceTime notifications can be disabled separately, and an active Focus can prevent them from appearing unless allowed. Apple explains the controls in its FaceTime notification settings guide.

Check Focus and Do Not Disturb
- Open Control Center from the Mac menu bar.
- Click Focus and turn off Do Not Disturb and any other active Focus mode for a test.
- If the issue returns at particular times, check for scheduled Focus modes and whether Focus is shared across your Apple devices.
Apple’s Focus controls guide explains how to turn a mode on or off and manage schedules.

Check caller filters and phone lines
Unknown callers, blocked numbers, and spam filtering
If known contacts ring through but unknown numbers do not, inspect the iPhone’s blocked contacts, Screen Unknown Callers, Call Filtering, and any carrier spam-screening service. Apple says iPhone call-management features such as screening and filtering can affect calls on other devices; see its overview of calls on Mac. Test with a known contact and an unknown number to see whether the failure follows the caller category.
Dual-SIM and line-specific failures
For an iPhone with multiple SIMs or phone lines, check Wi-Fi Calling for the line receiving the missed call, then test each line separately. Apple notes that when Wi-Fi Calling is not enabled for a line, an incoming call to that line can go directly to voicemail while the other line is in use, without a missed-call notification. Details are in Apple’s dual-SIM calling guide.

Restart and re-establish the connection
- Quit FaceTime and Phone on the Mac, if the Phone app is in use.
- Restart the Mac and iPhone.
- Reconnect both devices to Wi-Fi.
- Recheck Calls on Other Devices on the iPhone and Calls from iPhone on the Mac.
- Test with an incoming call from a known contact.
If either device has pending software updates, install them and check the settings again. Apple includes restarting among its Wi-Fi Calling troubleshooting steps.
Reset network settings only as a last resort
If Wi-Fi Calling still fails after checking setup, sound, filters, the network, and restarting, try turning Wi-Fi Calling off and back on under the iPhone’s Settings > Cellular > Wi-Fi Calling path, then restart and test another Wi-Fi network. Menu placement can vary with iOS.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →As a last resort, use Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This removes saved network configurations, so you will need to reconnect to Wi-Fi networks afterward. It is not a guaranteed fix; Apple lists it as a later option in its Wi-Fi Calling troubleshooting guidance.
Know when to contact your carrier or Apple
- Contact your carrier if Wi-Fi Calling is unavailable, activation fails, the problem affects one SIM or line, or service changed after a plan, SIM, or eSIM change. Ask whether your plan and region support calls on other devices and whether the line is provisioned correctly.
- Contact Apple Support if the carrier confirms support and provisioning, the devices meet Apple’s requirements, and the Mac still does not appear in the iPhone’s device list or calls fail across networks after restarting.
Apple directs customers to their carrier when Wi-Fi Calling cannot be enabled despite supported service and current software (Apple Wi-Fi Calling troubleshooting).
