Discord crashes on Windows for different reasons: a service outage, stale processes, damaged local files, GPU-driver conflicts, or a trigger such as launching a game or starting a stream. Check Discord’s live status first, then follow the symptom-specific steps below. Do not delete folders or reinstall until you know whether the failure is local to the desktop app.
First, identify what “crashing” means
Use the branch that matches your symptom:
- Discord closes without warning or disappears immediately after launch.
- The window turns white, black, or blank, or repeatedly refreshes.
- Discord freezes and must be ended in Task Manager.
- It fails only when a game starts, a voice channel connects, a camera opens, or screen sharing or Go Live begins.
- Windows itself freezes, reboots, resets the display driver, or shows a blue screen.
A Discord outage affects logins, messages, calls, or other users and is not repaired by changing files on your PC. A Windows-wide crash requires separate Windows, driver, thermal, memory, or hardware troubleshooting.
Check whether Discord is down
Before changing files or drivers, open Discord’s official status page. If it reports an incident, wait for the service to recover instead of reinstalling the app. Status information changes continuously, so use the live page rather than relying on an old incident report.
Low-risk fixes to try first
- Save anything important in the current session.
- Quit Discord from the notification-area (system-tray) icon.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager and end every remaining Discord process.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Discord, let it update, and test it without a game, overlay, camera, or stream running.
Discord recommends fully closing the app, checking Task Manager, waiting briefly, clearing cache, and updating the client in its general troubleshooting guide.

When Discord crashes as soon as it opens
Clear only the cache
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
%AppData%discordand press Enter. - Delete the
Cachefolder if it exists. - Restart Discord.
This removes temporary files without deleting the entire local installation. Do not delete unrelated folders in AppData.
Perform a clean reinstall for JavaScript errors or “corrupt installation” messages
Use this stronger repair when Discord will not stay open, shows a JavaScript error, or a normal reinstall changes nothing:
- Quit Discord from the tray, then end all Discord processes in Task Manager.
- Press Windows + R, enter
%AppData%, and delete only theDiscordfolder. - Press Windows + R again, enter
%LocalAppData%, and delete only itsDiscordfolder. - Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from Discord’s official Windows download page, install it, and sign in.
These folders contain local application data and cached state; deleting them does not delete your Discord account, servers, or memberships. If Windows says a folder is in use, return to Task Manager and terminate every Discord process before trying again. Discord documents this procedure for corrupt installations and its error-message guide.

If Discord crashes when a game starts
A game-launch trigger points more strongly toward graphics drivers, overlay injection, hardware acceleration, or a multiple-GPU interaction than toward account or network problems.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck the GPU and driver version
- Press Windows + R, type
dxdiag, and press Enter. - Open the Display tabs to identify the GPU.
- Check the installed driver version in the GPU vendor’s software or Windows device information.
- Note whether the problem began immediately after a driver update.
AMD driver 26.5.1 / 32.0.31007.1017
Discord has documented a Windows issue in which its client closes, crashes, or refreshes when a game starts on systems using AMD driver 26.5.1, also identified as 32.0.31007.1017. See Discord’s known-issue notice for current status. Do not assume every Discord crash is caused by AMD.
If your version matches, install a newer AMD driver if AMD has confirmed one; otherwise roll back to a known-stable version or perform a clean driver reinstall using AMD’s official process. Record the old version before changing it. A rollback can restore stability but may reintroduce other compatibility or security limitations.

Disable overlay as a controlled test
- Open Discord and select the gear icon beside your account name.
- Open User Settings.
- Find Game Overlay or Overlay and turn it off.
- Restart Discord and launch the game again.
Overlay is a test, not a proven cause of every crash. Discord maintains a known-issues index where interface names and active issues can change.
Disable hardware acceleration
If Discord remains open long enough:
- Select the gear icon beside your account name.
- Open User Settings > Advanced.
- Turn Hardware Acceleration off.
- Restart Discord when prompted, or close and reopen it.
- Repeat the action that caused the crash.
For video or screen-sharing failures, the control may also appear under User Settings > Voice & Video > Video; labels vary by client release. Discord’s voice and video guide covers this path.
Turning acceleration off is diagnostic, not automatically the best permanent setting. It can reduce GPU-rendering conflicts but increase CPU use or reduce rendering performance.

If screen sharing, video, or the camera triggers the crash
- Disable hardware acceleration and Discord Overlay.
- Update Windows and the graphics driver, or test a rollback if the issue began after an update.
- Close other capture, recording, browser, or GPU-intensive applications.
- Check Windows camera and microphone permissions.
- Disconnect the camera or select another camera to isolate a device-specific failure.
- Try Discord in a browser. If the browser works while the desktop app crashes, local installation or desktop rendering is more likely.
If voice works but video crashes, focus on camera permissions, rendering, and drivers rather than changing DNS or VPN settings. For audio-only failures, Discord’s voice/video guide also describes switching between the Standard and Legacy audio subsystems.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use Windows repair when installation or removal is blocked
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select Discord and choose Advanced options, if shown.
- Try Repair first, then Reset if necessary.
Not every desktop app exposes these controls. If uninstall still fails, use Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter, which targets corrupted registry keys and incomplete install or uninstall data. Run Windows Security if a suspicious process appears to be blocking installation.
Discord’s troubleshooting guide cites Windows 10 or later as a baseline, but Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Application compatibility and Microsoft’s ongoing operating-system support are separate questions.

Late-stage workarounds
Run Discord as administrator
Discord lists running the executable as administrator as an additional corrupt-installation measure. Use it only after the safer steps above; elevated permissions can create mismatches with games and other apps. Remove the setting if it does not help.
Try compatibility settings
Windows 7 or Windows 8 compatibility mode is a legacy workaround mentioned by Discord. It is not evidence that current Windows is unsupported and can introduce new behavior, so test it one change at a time.
Do not use random repair utilities
Avoid registry cleaners, unofficial “Discord repair” executables, and third-party driver-updater tools. They can damage a working installation or install unwanted software. VPN or DNS changes are relevant to connection failures, not usually to a desktop process that closes.
When Discord crashes Windows itself
If Discord coincides with a blue screen, complete freeze, reboot, display-driver reset, or system-wide lockup, stop treating it as an app-only problem. Check Windows Reliability Monitor and Event Viewer, then investigate GPU drivers, RAM, thermals, and other hardware. On a laptop with integrated and discrete GPUs, Discord and the game may be rendered by different adapters; this makes driver and overlay interaction plausible, but does not prove causation.
What to collect before contacting support
If the steps above fail, gather evidence instead of repeating the same reinstall:
- Windows edition and version.
- Discord client type: stable, PTB, Canary, or browser.
- Discord version, if visible.
- GPU model and driver version.
- The exact trigger: startup, game launch, voice connection, camera, or screen share.
- Exact error text, screenshots, or a short recording.
- Whether hardware acceleration or Overlay was disabled.
- Whether cache clearing or the clean reinstall changed anything.
- Precise steps that reproduce the crash.
- Reliability Monitor or Event Viewer entries when Windows is also affected.
Submit those details through Discord support or its bug-report process, and send the same evidence to AMD, NVIDIA, Intel, or Microsoft only when it points to that component. Discord’s troubleshooting guidance recommends documenting system specifications, error messages, known-issue checks, and reproducible steps.
Quick Recap
Decision guide
| Symptom | Best next test | Escalate when |
|---|---|---|
| Closes at startup | End processes, clear cache, then clean-reinstall both Discord folders | It still fails after reinstall or Windows reports file/permission errors |
| Crashes only when a game launches | Check GPU driver, disable Overlay and hardware acceleration | Driver-specific evidence points to AMD, NVIDIA, or Intel |
| Crashes during video or sharing | Disable acceleration, check permissions, close competing capture apps, test browser Discord | Only the desktop renderer fails or Windows resets the display driver |
| Messages or calls fail for many users | Check Discord Status | Incident remains after the service recovers |
| Blue screen or full system freeze | Use Reliability Monitor/Event Viewer and investigate drivers and hardware | Windows-wide instability continues independently of Discord |
