NW-31204-0 means “There was an error connecting to the network.” Sony documents this code as a PS4 error. It is not listed as a current PS5-specific code, so a PS5 owner should recheck the exact code and use the matching PS5 support page. Start by checking PlayStation Network status, testing the console connection, and power-cycling the modem and router for at least five minutes.
Is NW-31204-0 a PS4 or PS5 error?
Sony lists NW-31204-0 in its PS4 error-code directory. Sony’s current error-code hub does not identify it as a native PS5 code; PS5 uses other network-code families. If a PS5 displays this wording, check the code again and use the exact PS5 code’s support page.
For a PS5, run Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection. If the code differs, follow the corresponding page in Sony’s PS5 support.
Do these checks first
- Open the PlayStation Network status page. If Sony reports an outage or maintenance, wait rather than changing router settings.
- Check another phone or computer on the same network. If every device is offline, troubleshoot the modem, router, or ISP.
- Restart the console.
- Run the built-in connection test: on PS4, use Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection; on PS5, use Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection.
- Record whether an IP address was obtained, internet access succeeded, PSN sign-in succeeded, the NAT type, and any displayed download or upload results. These results narrow the problem but do not identify every cause.
Power-cycle the modem and router correctly
Sony’s PS4 instructions specify waiting at least five minutes before restarting the network equipment. A full cycle is different from pressing a Wi-Fi button briefly.

- Turn off the PS4 or PS5.
- Turn off the modem and router.
- Leave both powered off for at least five minutes.
- Turn on the modem and wait until it reconnects to the ISP.
- Turn on the router and wait for Wi-Fi or LAN service to return.
- Restart the console and run the connection test again.
Separate a Wi-Fi problem from an internet problem
Improve the wireless test
Move the console closer to the router and remove practical obstructions or sources of interference. If your router offers both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, test each: 2.4 GHz generally reaches farther, while 5 GHz can be faster at short range. This is a diagnostic comparison, not a guaranteed fix. Avoid testing through an overloaded extender or mesh node when a direct router connection is available.
Recreate the saved Wi-Fi connection
Delete or forget the saved wireless network on the console, then set it up again with the router’s current password and automatic network settings. Do not guess a static IP, gateway, subnet mask, MTU, DNS, or proxy value.

Try Ethernet
Connect the console directly to the router with a known-good LAN cable and repeat the test. If Ethernet works while Wi-Fi fails, focus on signal strength, interference, wireless settings, or mesh/extender behavior. If Ethernet also fails, investigate the router, ISP, PSN status, sign-in, filtering, or the console configuration.
Advanced router steps
Update router firmware
Sony recommends updating the router to its latest firmware and referring to the manufacturer for model-specific instructions. Record the current configuration first: some updates can reset or alter settings. Download firmware only from the manufacturer or your ISP.

Ports and filtering
Port forwarding is a last-resort step for a restrictive router, not a default fix. Sony’s PS4 guidance lists these ports:
| Protocol | Ports |
|---|---|
| TCP | 80, 443, 3478, 3479, 3480 |
| UDP | 3478, 3479, 49152–65535 |
Use your router manufacturer’s or ISP’s instructions, reserve a stable local address before forwarding, and understand that opening ports adds maintenance and security complications. These are Sony’s PS4 recommendations; they do not establish that NW-31204-0 is a PS5 code. Do not place the console in a DMZ as a casual workaround.

DNS, MTU, and proxy settings
Recreate the connection with automatic settings before trying Custom setup. Sony’s dedicated NW-31204-0 guidance does not prescribe a particular DNS or MTU value, so claims that one public DNS server universally fixes this code are unverified. If a managed network requires a static address or proxy, obtain the values from its administrator and keep the original settings recorded.
Use the test result to choose the next step
| What you observe | Most useful direction |
|---|---|
| Every device is offline | Modem, router, ISP outage, or line fault |
| Only the console’s Wi-Fi fails | Wireless signal, interference, band, or saved-network configuration |
| Ethernet works but Wi-Fi fails | Wireless or mesh/extender troubleshooting |
| Internet works but PSN sign-in fails | PSN status, account sign-in, NAT, filtering, or maintenance |
| Only one game fails | Game publisher service, game update, or application installation |
| PSN status reports an incident | Wait for restoration; avoid repeated resets or risky changes |
Public, hotel, school, and work networks
Captive portals and managed networks may require browser authentication or administrator approval. Hotels, dormitories, workplaces, and schools can block gaming traffic, and carrier-grade NAT may prevent port forwarding. A phone hotspot can provide a temporary comparison test, but data limits, NAT restrictions, and unstable latency make it unsuitable as a guaranteed permanent solution.

When only one game is affected
If the console passes its connection test and other online services work, check the game publisher’s server status, update the game, restart it, and test another online title. Sony’s software and application guidance also recommends current system software and checking or reinstalling an affected application. The code alone does not prove a hardware failure.
When to contact support
- Contact your ISP for widespread outages, line problems, router firmware issues, filtering, or restrictions on a public or managed network.
- Contact PlayStation Support when other devices work, Ethernet and Wi-Fi comparisons do not resolve the problem, and the console repeatedly fails its test.
- Have the console model, exact code, connection-test results, NAT type, network type, and steps already attempted ready for the support agent.
A factory reset or Safe Mode reset is disproportionate to an ordinary network error unless support identifies a broader system problem; those actions can risk data or settings.
