Choose Capture a full size screenshot for the whole page. These are screenshots of Chrome’s desktop emulation—not proof of how the page behaves on a physical phone.
Take a mobile screenshot with Chrome DevTools
Chrome’s built-in Device Mode is the most direct way to make a screenshot of a page at a mobile viewport size. It can use device presets or responsive dimensions, and it offers separate choices for the visible viewport and the full page. You do not need a Chrome extension for either capture. Chrome for Developers describes Device Mode as a first-order approximation of a mobile device, not a substitute for running the site on that device.
- Open the page on your computer. Navigate to the webpage in Chrome and wait for the part you want to capture to finish loading.
- Open DevTools. Use Chrome’s DevTools command or menu. If DevTools opens docked beside the page, you can leave it there or use its docking control to change the layout.
- Turn on the device toolbar. In DevTools, select Toggle device toolbar. The page will be displayed in a simulated device viewport.
- Choose the viewport. Select a device preset from the toolbar, or choose responsive sizing and enter the width and height you need. Check that the page is being rendered at the dimensions you intend to document.
- Capture the screenshot. Open the device toolbar’s More options menu and select Capture screenshot for the visible viewport. Select Capture a full size screenshot when you want the page content beyond the viewport as well.
Chrome’s menu placement and labels can change between versions. If a control is not where you expect, look in the device toolbar’s More options menu and consult Chrome for Developers’ documentation, “Simulate mobile devices with device mode” (updated July 4, 2022; accessed September 29, 2026).
Visible viewport or full page?
A viewport screenshot records what fits within the emulated screen at that moment. It is the better choice for a mobile layout review, a bug report about a visible control, or an example of what a visitor sees without scrolling. A full-size screenshot captures page content beyond the visible viewport, which is useful for reviewing a long landing page or documenting an entire layout. It is not a sequence of separate phone-screen images; it is a full-page capture.

For a fair comparison between pages, keep the viewport dimensions and page state consistent. If a page has a menu, dialog, cookie notice, or other temporary overlay open, the screenshot records that state. Dismiss or open the relevant UI deliberately before capture rather than treating the screenshot as a neutral representation of the page.
Choose between DevTools and a Chrome extension
For a one-off screenshot, DevTools is sufficient and avoids adding an extension. An extension may be convenient if its workflow better matches repeated captures or offers the presets you use often, but an extension that creates a mobile-sized image in desktop Chrome is still not capturing the display of an actual phone.

| Setup | Use tools included with desktop Chrome; no extension installation is needed. | Requires installing the extension from the Chrome Web Store. |
| Permissions and privacy | This workflow uses Chrome DevTools. | The listing details cited here do not establish broader permission or privacy claims. |
The extension details in the table are claims in the ResponsiveShot Chrome Web Store listing, accessed September 29, 2026; they are not independent test results. Use an extension only if its described workflow is useful to you, and check its current listing and requested permissions before installing it. DevTools remains the straightforward choice for a single mobile viewport or full-page capture.

Know what a desktop mobile screenshot does—and does not—show
Device Mode changes the page’s simulated viewport and can emulate selected device characteristics. It does not move the page onto a physical phone or turn desktop Chrome into every mobile browser. A screenshot can help you inspect responsive layout, but it cannot by itself establish how a specific phone, operating system, browser, or hardware feature behaves.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Good use: checking whether columns stack at a narrow width, a navigation bar fits, or content is clipped in a simulated viewport.
- Not established by the screenshot: touch behavior, device-specific rendering, browser-specific differences, or behavior that depends on real hardware or operating-system integration.
- When authenticity matters: open the site on the target phone or tablet and capture it there. For a page running on Android, Chrome also documents a separate remote-debugging workflow for inspecting the device from a computer.
Chrome’s guidance is to treat Device Mode as an approximation and use actual-device testing when device-dependent behavior matters. Do not present an emulated screenshot as evidence that a site works on every mobile device or browser.
Use a real Android device when the page must be running on the phone
If the requirement is to inspect or capture a page actually open on Android, use the Android device rather than relying on the desktop viewport simulation. Chrome’s remote-debugging documentation describes a separate workflow for inspecting Chrome on an Android device from a computer. That is distinct from choosing a device preset in desktop DevTools.

Remote debugging is most useful when you need to examine the live page running in mobile Chrome. For a visual record, capture the screen on the phone using its own screenshot controls. For a test where a particular device or browser matters, verify on that target; one Android capture does not establish behavior on iOS or other browsers.

The page looks like desktop, not mobile
Confirm that the device toolbar is enabled and that the intended preset or responsive dimensions are selected. Merely opening DevTools does not switch the page to a mobile viewport.
The screenshot cuts off the page
You may have selected the visible-viewport capture. Open More options again and choose Capture a full size screenshot if the goal is to include content below the fold.

The result does not match the phone
Device Mode is an approximation. Recheck on the actual target device and browser when the difference could depend on device-specific behavior; remote debugging is available for inspecting a page running on Android.
A control or menu label has moved
Chrome can change DevTools placement and labels. Look for the device toolbar’s More options menu and check the current Chrome for Developers Device Mode documentation rather than assuming an older screenshot tutorial shows the current interface.
An extension’s output or behavior is unclear
Verify the current Chrome Web Store listing for the extension’s described output and workflow, and review its permissions before installing. The ResponsiveShot listing describes local PNG downloads and mobile presets, but those listing claims do not establish behavior beyond what the publisher states.
