Safari’s built-in option is Reader: it gives supported articles a simplified reading view, but it does not turn every website dark. On iPhone or iPad, open the Page Menu and choose Show Reader; on Mac, enable Reader for a site under Safari > Settings > Websites > Reader. For pages that do not support Reader—or when you want to keep a site’s full layout—you’ll need a Safari extension instead.
Choose the right kind of dark mode
There are two different goals people mean by “dark mode in Safari”:
- A calmer article view: Safari Reader removes much of a page’s original layout and presents its relevant text and images in a reading view. Reader can be used only on pages Safari supports.
- A dark version of the whole website: An extension can alter a webpage’s presentation while retaining more of its original structure. Its results and controls depend on the extension and the site.
Reader is the built-in choice when you are reading an article and do not need the site’s full design or controls. An extension is the fallback when Reader is unavailable, or when you want to keep more of the page intact. Neither approach guarantees that every image, form, embedded tool, or interactive element will appear exactly as intended in a dark presentation.
Use Reader on iPhone or iPad
Turn Reader on for the page you have open
- Open the webpage in Safari.
- Tap the Page Menu button at the left of the search field.
- Tap Show Reader, if it appears. Apple describes Reader as a view that formats a webpage to show the relevant text and images.
If Show Reader is missing, Safari does not offer Reader for that page. It is not a dark-mode switch that can be forced on every site. Try an article page on the same site; if Reader still is not offered, use an extension if you need a darker version of the full page.

Make Reader automatic for a site
- With the site open, tap Page Menu > Website Settings.
- Turn on Use Reader Automatically.
This is a site-level preference for pages that support Reader. To set the broader preference for supported sites, open Settings > Apps > Safari > Reader > All Websites. Automatic Reader does not make unsupported pages eligible for Reader.
Set a Reader default on Mac
- Open Safari and choose Safari > Settings.
- Click Websites, then select Reader in the left column.
- Find the website and set its Reader option to On.
This makes Safari use Reader automatically for articles on that site. A site default set to Off does not prevent you from opening an individual article in Reader when the option is available. Apple’s documented control is a per-website Reader setting; it should not be confused with an instruction to recolor the site’s complete layout.
When Reader is not enough
Reader trades the original page layout for a cleaner article view. It is useful for reading, but it is not a site-wide color filter: navigation, forms, shopping flows, dashboards, and other non-article pages may not qualify or may not be represented in the reading view. If you need to retain the page’s layout and make it darker, use a Safari extension that changes webpage presentation.

Apple distributes Safari extensions through the App Store and documents extension support for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. The listing for Dark Reader for Safari says it creates dark themes for websites on the fly; it advertises per-website on/off controls, syncing with system dark mode, and detection of sites that are already dark. Those are the developer’s listed capabilities, not an independent performance assessment. Its App Store listing showed $4.99 when this article’s source information was assembled; app prices and availability can change, so check the current listing before installing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsInstall and enable an extension
- Find the extension in the App Store and review its current price, compatibility, and requested access.
- Install it, then open Safari’s extension controls and enable it. On iPhone or iPad, these controls are in Safari settings; on Mac, manage extensions from Safari settings. Exact labels and locations can differ between operating-system releases, so follow the current settings screen on your device.
- Grant the website access the extension requests if you want it to modify that page. Consider the scope of access before approving it.
- Open the site and use the extension’s controls to switch its styling on or off for that website. If the result is hard to read or a site behaves unexpectedly, disable the extension for that site and try Reader or the site’s own appearance setting.
Extensions can offer broader coverage and retain more of a site than Reader, but their styling may not fit every site perfectly. Dark Reader’s listing advertises controls for individual websites and already-dark sites; those are useful options to check if it applies an unwanted effect.
Why Safari looks dark but the webpage stays white
A dark Safari toolbar or dark system appearance does not mean Safari has recolored the website. The page controls its own appearance, and many sites stay light unless they provide a dark theme or a browser extension changes their styling. Reader is a separate reading view, available only when Safari offers it for that page.

- A page has no Reader option: Reader cannot be enabled for that page through the built-in controls; choose a site theme or extension instead.
ScreenshotNeo is for capturing a page, not changing Safari’s theme
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server from Yorker Media, not a Safari dark-mode extension. It can capture a URL as an image or PDF; it will not turn the webpage you are browsing into a live dark-mode page. If your actual goal is to obtain a screenshot, a single GET request can capture a page. The screenshot API documentation is at ScreenshotNeo’s API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Change the target URL to the page you want to capture, and use your API key in place of YOUR_API_KEY. The response can be PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. ScreenshotNeo’s cleaning steps can accept consent banners and remove supported consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. It bills only clean shots: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. These are screenshot and automation capabilities, not a way to enable dark mode in Safari. To try it, create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

Troubleshoot the common cases
“Show Reader” does not appear
Safari Reader is supported on qualifying pages, not every webpage. Try the site’s article page rather than its homepage or an interactive section. If the option remains unavailable, use the site’s theme control or a Safari extension.
Reader opens, but the page is not dark
Reader changes the page into a streamlined reading view; it is not a promise that every webpage will receive a dark palette. If its appearance is not what you want, use the website’s own theme control or an extension that offers dark styling.

The automatic setting seems to have no effect
Check that the preference was enabled for the website you are visiting and that the current page supports Reader. A site-wide Reader preference applies to supported pages; it cannot make an unsupported page readable in Reader.
An extension is installed but does not change the page
Confirm it is enabled in Safari’s extension controls and has the website access it requests. Then check whether its per-site setting is off. If the menus differ from these general directions, use the labels shown in your current iOS, iPadOS, or macOS settings.

Which approach should you use?
| Approach | Coverage | What changes | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Safari Reader | Pages Safari supports | Reformats the page into a reading view | Reading articles with fewer distractions |
| Website theme control | Depends on the site | The site’s own presentation, where offered | Keeping the site’s intended layout and features |
| Safari extension | Depends on the extension and site | Can apply dark styling while retaining more of the webpage | Pages without Reader support, or when a fuller layout is needed |
Reader’s controls are built into Safari. An extension adds a separate software component and may request access to website content; review those permissions and the current listing before installing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make every Safari webpage black?
No single built-in Safari Reader setting does that. Reader is limited to supported pages, and an extension’s coverage and appearance depend on the extension and site.
Does Safari Reader work on iPhone, iPad, and Mac?
Apple documents Reader controls for iPhone and iPad as well as per-site Reader settings in Safari on Mac.
Does dark mode change how a webpage is saved or printed?
The instructions here concern how a page is presented in Safari. They do not establish how a particular site or print workflow will render or save it.
