The error Unable to find element in cloned iframe means html2canvas could not find the clone of the element you passed to it. Despite the wording, it does not by itself mean your page’s own iframe failed to load: html2canvas checks for the cloned reference element before it creates the cloned iframe. Start by confirming that the exact target node is still attached to the document when capture begins, then check whether an ignore rule excluded it or one of its ancestors.
What the error means
html2canvas does not take a screenshot by simply asking the browser to photograph a page. It clones DOM content as part of its rendering process. In the upstream source, the rejection occurs when documentCloner.clonedReferenceElement is falsy. The check is made before the library calls toIFrame, so the error identifies a missing mapping to the cloned target; it is not a generic report that your application’s iframe document is unready. The source check and clone flow are visible in html2canvas’s index.ts.
This distinction narrows the investigation: first check the target passed to html2canvas and the rules that may exclude it. Only after those checks should you investigate less-established cases such as framework projection, SVG, or Shadow DOM.
Check whether the target exists and is attached
Log or validate the target immediately before calling html2canvas. A selector can return null, and a framework can replace a node after your code has saved a reference to it. A node can also exist as a JavaScript object but be detached from the document. The source checks the input element and its owner document, then later separately checks whether the cloner retained a corresponding reference.

});isConnected confirms that the node is currently connected to a document tree. It does not prove that html2canvas can clone or render every part of it, and it is not a fix for an exclusion rule. The catch handler makes the rejection visible instead of leaving it as an unhandled promise rejection.
Reacquire dynamic targets at capture time
If the page is rendered or updated dynamically, find the target as close as possible to the capture call. Avoid keeping a reference across a render that may replace the element. In a component framework, trigger capture only after the framework has committed the relevant DOM, then query for the current node and perform the same presence and connectivity checks.
This is a diagnostic inference from the source’s lookup behavior, not a universal framework-specific fix. If the current node is connected and the error persists, continue to the exclusion checks rather than assuming timing was the cause.

Inspect html2canvas exclusion rules
html2canvas supports excluding content with the data-html2canvas-ignore attribute and with an ignoreElements callback. Check the target itself and each ancestor for the attribute; an ignored ancestor can prevent a descendant target from appearing in the clone. Also inspect whether your callback returns true for the target or a relevant node.

}Remove or adjust the exclusion only if the target is meant to appear in the screenshot. An ancestor carrying data-html2canvas-ignore was the documented cause in one reported case; removing that attribute fixed that reporter’s case, but it should not be treated as the cause of every occurrence. Check framework rendering and node boundaries
Angular projection and render timing
An Angular issue author using html2canvas 1.4.1 reported that projected elements were not in the document tree. That report concerned Chrome 103.0.5060.134 on Windows 11 and was opened August 1, 2022; it does not establish a universal Angular bug or a verified fix for all applications. See the issue report.

For a framework-rendered target, check document.querySelector and isConnected at the exact capture point. If the target is temporarily absent, move the call to a point after rendering has completed. If your framework replaces the node, reacquire it rather than capturing through an old reference.
SVG and Shadow DOM
Issue comments mention generated SVG and Shadow DOM in connection with reports of this error. Those discussions do not show that SVG or Shadow DOM always fails, or establish one general remedy. Treat the node type as a lead to isolate in a minimal reproduction, not as a diagnosis.

Try capturing a simple attached element first. Then add the framework component, SVG content, shadow content, and ignore rules one at a time. The first change that reproduces the failure gives you a smaller case to investigate.

Use onclone at the right stage
The onclone option is for customizing the cloned document, for example to alter cloned styles or content. It is not a supported blanket workaround for a target whose cloned reference is already missing: the source performs the reference check before it proceeds to toIFrame and the later clone lifecycle. Confirm the target is present and not excluded before using onclone to make changes to the clone.

- Capture a basic element. Use a simple, attached element without framework projection, SVG, Shadow DOM, or ignore rules.
- Confirm the actual input. Log the element and check that it is non-null and connected immediately before the call.
- Restore exclusions. Reintroduce
data-html2canvas-ignoreand anyignoreElementscallback, checking which rule changes the outcome. - Restore application complexity one piece at a time. Add the component, projected content, generated SVG, or shadow content separately.
- Keep the rejection visible. Catch the returned promise and record the full error so you can distinguish this failure from another capture problem.
This sequence does not assume SVG, Shadow DOM, a framework, or an iframe is the cause. It separates the source-confirmed missing-reference condition from anecdotal reproduction leads.

A Safari-titled issue opened August 7, 2023 includes an example referencing html2canvas 1.4.1. Its title and example do not establish a Safari-only root cause. Read the report if your case resembles it, but apply the same target and exclusion checks first.

Does this error mean my website iframe failed to load?
Not necessarily. html2canvas raises this message when it cannot find the cloned reference element, before it creates the cloned iframe.
Will adding an onclone callback fix the error?
Not as a general fix. The reference check happens before the later clone lifecycle where onclone is used.
Is this a confirmed html2canvas 1.4.1 Safari bug?
The cited Safari-titled issue references 1.4.1, but its title and example do not establish a Safari-only cause.
