Also inspect the footer HTML’s rendered height and CSS. There is no universal numeric setting: the right combination depends on the page size, installed wkhtmltopdf version, footer, and other options.
Identify which gap is actually too large
“Footer margin” can describe several different spaces in a PDF. Identify the visible gap before changing configuration; otherwise, you may reduce the wrong area and make the layout harder to diagnose.
- Between the body content and the footer: this is the gap addressed by
--footer-spacing, documented in millimeters. - Below the footer, between it and the bottom edge of the paper: check the page’s
--margin-bottom. - Inside the footer itself: inspect the footer HTML and its CSS, including margins, padding, line height, and table spacing.
These distinctions matter because the two wkhtmltopdf options are separate controls. Changing footer spacing is not the same as changing the paper’s bottom margin, and neither necessarily removes whitespace created by the footer’s own layout.
Record the effective Snappy and wkhtmltopdf configuration
Before adjusting values, note the exact wkhtmltopdf version used for the PDF and how Snappy invokes it. Record the effective page size, bottom margin, footer spacing, header options, and any per-document overrides. The options that matter are the ones reaching the renderer for the failing document—not merely values you expect the application to use.

Keep a copy of the original settings and a sample output. If the result changes, you will then know which configuration change caused it and can revert cleanly. Include the footer HTML, CSS, and any JavaScript that affects its contents in your diagnostic record.
Isolate the cause with a controlled test
- Make a small reproduction. Use one page of body content and a short footer with fixed, known content and height. Keep the page size and all other relevant options constant.
- Compare the output before changing settings. Mark whether the unwanted space is above the footer, below it, or inside it. Check that the footer is present and that the body content has not simply ended earlier than expected.
- Change one control at a time. Adjust bottom margin or footer spacing separately, then render again. If both change in one test, the result will not tell you which control mattered.
- Keep the HTML and CSS constant while comparing values. A changed footer can alter the result independently of the wkhtmltopdf options.
- Repeat with realistic content. Once the short-footer case behaves as intended, test the longest or most variable footer your documents use.
The command-line reference lists the default for --footer-spacing as 0 mm. That is a documented default, not a recommendation for every document; the appropriate setting depends on the footer and the intended content area.
Adjust the page margin and footer spacing for the actual layout
When the gap is between content and footer
Review --footer-spacing first. It describes the distance between the footer and content, so it is the most direct control for that particular gap. Compare rendered results while holding the bottom margin, page size, footer markup, and other options steady.
When the gap is below the footer
Review --margin-bottom, which controls the page’s bottom margin. Set it with the actual footer height and desired printable content area in mind. A margin that is adequate for a short footer may not suit one whose content grows or wraps.

When the footer itself creates the space
Inspect its rendered dimensions and CSS rather than trying to compensate entirely with page-level settings. Look for margins and padding on the footer and its children, line height, table spacing, and content that varies between pages. Historical reports describe whitespace changing with HTML footer content, including difficulty accommodating a footer with variable height. Those reports are useful diagnostic examples, not a guarantee that every layout behaves the same way.
Test both a short and a long footer after tuning. If the footer content changes dynamically, a fixed margin chosen for one output may not fit another. Avoid adopting a number from somebody else’s PDF without matching the page size, renderer version, footer dimensions, and other options.
Check header options and version-specific behavior
Header settings can be relevant even when the visible problem is at the bottom of the page. Historical issue reports describe cases where footer spacing appeared to follow header spacing, and a separate report for wkhtmltopdf 0.12.6 described unexpected header-spacing behavior when only a footer was supplied. Treat these as configuration-specific clues, not proof of a current general defect.
For a controlled comparison, check whether the output changes when header options are present, omitted, or empty, while keeping the rest of the test fixed. Record the exact option set and renderer version for each result. Do not assume that --footer-spacing alone explains an outcome when header configuration also changes.

The wkhtmltopdf library settings reference also documents margins and header/footer configuration. It warns that excessive header spacing can put a header outside the PDF and notes top margin as a correction. That is a separate layout issue, but it is a reason to check the full set of margin and header settings rather than treating one spacing option in isolation.
Use a test matrix before changing production output
A compact comparison makes it easier to distinguish an option problem from a footer-layout problem. Render the same page content in each case and record the version and effective options alongside the result.

This is a diagnostic sequence, not a set of guaranteed outputs. Select final values by checking the generated PDFs against the content area and footer you need.
Troubleshoot common outcomes
The footer is too far from the body, but the bottom margin looks acceptable
Check --footer-spacing and compare it independently from --margin-bottom. Confirm that the gap is not caused by margins, padding, line height, or table spacing inside the footer HTML.

The footer sits correctly relative to content, but too much page remains below it
Check the effective bottom margin and the footer’s actual rendered height. Keep the footer and page size fixed while comparing the margin; do not use footer spacing to correct whitespace below the footer.
Changing the spacing option seems to have no effect or gives an unexpected result
Verify that the intended value is reaching the wkhtmltopdf process for this document. Then record the version and test the exact header options as well as any per-document overrides. Historical reports show that header/footer interactions have been observed in particular builds and configurations, but do not establish a universal cause.
A setting works for one document but not another
Compare page size, footer markup and CSS, footer height, and effective options. If the footer content varies, run a longer-footer test before treating the value as suitable for all documents.
You cannot explain the output from the options alone
Reduce the document to one page and a fixed-height footer, then add back the original layout features one at a time. This helps isolate whether the change comes from page settings, header options, or footer HTML/CSS.

Escalate with a reproducible example
If the controlled case still behaves unexpectedly, prepare a minimal example for the project’s issue-reporting process. Include:
- the exact wkhtmltopdf version and how Snappy invokes it;
- the minimal HTML, CSS, and JavaScript needed to reproduce the output;
- page size and all effective margin, footer-spacing, header, and footer settings;
- a description or image of where the whitespace appears, and the rendered PDF if appropriate;
- the smallest change that makes the behavior appear or disappear.
The project’s support guidance asks for the version and a detailed reproducible case, including HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Historical issue reports—including one concerning 0.12.5 that listed a 0.12.7 milestone—do not independently establish which fix, if any, is present in a particular current installation. Verify the behavior with the version you actually run.
