YouTube Thumbnail Image Size: Dimensions, Ratios, Formats and File Limits (2026)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use 3840 × 2160 pixels (16:9) for a standard YouTube video thumbnail. For a YouTube Short, use 2160 × 3840 pixels (9:16). Export as JPG or PNG, and check the upload limit for the device you are using: mobile video thumbnails are limited to 2 MB, while desktop video and Shorts thumbnails can be up to 50 MB. Podcast thumbnail limits are 10 MB on mobile and 50 MB on desktop.

The correct YouTube thumbnail size at a glance

Content type Recommended pixels Aspect ratio Minimum requirement Accepted format
Standard video 3840 × 2160 16:9 At least 640 pixels wide JPG or PNG
YouTube Short 2160 × 3840 9:16 At least 640 pixels high JPG or PNG
Podcast thumbnail Use the applicable YouTube thumbnail dimensions for the artwork Usually 16:9 for video artwork Follow the upload screen’s current requirement JPG or PNG

YouTube Help says a custom thumbnail should be “as large as possible.” The 3840 × 2160 and 2160 × 3840 recommendations give you a high-resolution master that can be reduced cleanly on smaller screens. YouTube may resize an image while preserving its aspect ratio; if the resulting shape does not fill the required area, black bars can be added.

Standard YouTube videos: use 3840 × 2160 at 16:9

A regular landscape video uses a 16:9 thumbnail. Create a canvas 3,840 pixels wide and 2,160 pixels high. This is the recommended working size for a standard video, not merely a minimum upload size.

Why 16:9 matters

The 16:9 shape matches the video player and most YouTube browsing surfaces. A thumbnail with a different ratio may be resized to fit, leaving bars or unwanted cropping. Keep faces, text and logos inside a central safe area rather than placing important details at the extreme edges.

The minimum is not the target

YouTube lists 640 pixels as the minimum width for a video thumbnail. A 640-pixel-wide file can satisfy the minimum yet look soft on high-density displays or when enlarged in previews. Start at 3840 × 2160, then export a smaller copy only when the file-size limit requires it.

YouTube Shorts: use 2160 × 3840 at 9:16

For a Short, prepare a vertical 2,160 × 3,840-pixel image with a 9:16 ratio. The minimum height is 640 pixels. Design for a tall phone screen: large type, a strong subject and generous margins are easier to read than a landscape composition squeezed into portrait space.

Where a Short’s custom thumbnail can change

For vertical videos, YouTube may replace a 16:9 custom thumbnail with an automatically generated 4:5 thumbnail on Home, Explore and subscription pages. The custom image remains available in the watch feed, watch history and on non-mobile platforms. This means a Short can have different-looking previews depending on the YouTube surface, so check the crop before publishing.

JPG versus PNG

Choose JPG for photographic designs

JPG usually produces a much smaller file for photographs, gradients and complex backgrounds. Use a high-quality export and inspect small text after compression; aggressive compression can create ringing around letters and faces.

Choose PNG for sharp graphics

PNG preserves crisp edges in logos, flat-color illustrations and text-heavy designs. It can be substantially larger than JPG, so a PNG that looks perfect may exceed a mobile upload limit. If that happens, keep the PNG as your master and export a quality-controlled JPG for upload.

File-size limits by upload device

Upload route Video thumbnail Shorts thumbnail Podcast thumbnail
Mobile 2 MB Use the limit shown by the current mobile upload flow; YouTube Help lists 2 MB for video thumbnails 10 MB
Desktop 50 MB 50 MB 50 MB

The mobile and desktop limits are different. If your 3840 × 2160 export is rejected on a phone, reduce JPG quality, resize a copy, remove unnecessary metadata or switch from PNG to JPG. Desktop uploads allow up to 50 MB for video, Shorts and podcast thumbnails, according to the current YouTube Help figures.

How to make a thumbnail that survives YouTube resizing

  1. Set the canvas. Use 3840 × 2160 for a standard video or 2160 × 3840 for a Short.
  2. Place the subject first. Keep the face, product or action readable at a small preview size.
  3. Limit the text. Use a short phrase in a heavy, high-contrast typeface; test it at phone-preview scale.
  4. Protect the edges. Leave breathing room around words and logos because the image can be resized or cropped on different surfaces.
  5. Export a master. Save an editable project and a full-resolution PNG or high-quality JPG.
  6. Make an upload copy. Check its pixel dimensions, file type and byte size. For mobile video uploads, keep it below 2 MB; for desktop, stay below 50 MB.
  7. Preview the actual listing. Look at the thumbnail in YouTube Studio and, for Shorts, inspect both portrait and the surfaces where YouTube may show a 4:5 auto-generated image.

Common mistakes and how to fix them

Uploading a landscape image for a Short

A 16:9 image does not match a vertical Short. Recompose at 9:16 instead of merely stretching the landscape file. Stretching distorts faces and lettering; adding large blank bands wastes the preview area.

Exporting below the minimum

A standard video file narrower than 640 pixels, or a Short file shorter than 640 pixels, can fail the stated minimum. Return to the original project and export at the recommended dimensions.

Black bars after upload

YouTube’s API documentation states that when an uploaded thumbnail does not match required dimensions, it is resized without changing its aspect ratio; black bars may be added to make the final size fit. Rebuild the canvas at the correct ratio and place artwork edge to edge where appropriate.

Text is unreadable on phones

Reduce the number of words, increase contrast and enlarge the type. A thumbnail is a preview image, not a poster: the design must work when displayed much smaller than the source file.

The file is too large on mobile

Export JPG at a slightly lower quality, flatten hidden layers, strip metadata and verify that the dimensions are still correct. Do not reduce below the minimum simply to meet the byte limit; make a balanced upload copy instead.

A PNG looks soft or has halos

Check that you are not repeatedly converting between formats. Export directly from the source project, use PNG for hard-edged graphics, and inspect the final file rather than the editable preview.

Check the thumbnail in the real watch page

Design software shows the file, but the watch page shows the final context: title, channel avatar, recommendation cards and responsive cropping. Capture the published or preview page at the viewport sizes your audience uses, then inspect whether the focal point and text still work. For automated teams, an API can make this visual check repeatable.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo can capture the YouTube page after you publish or stage it, so you can review the thumbnail without maintaining a headless-browser script. Its cleanup steps accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; each step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

One GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. The API supports full-page capture, a CSS-selected element, device presets, custom viewports, retina scale, dark mode, waits, custom CSS and JavaScript, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation and caching. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for all parameters. This cURL example captures a YouTube page as a WebP file:

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use the same thumbnail file for a video and a Short?

Not reliably. A standard video is designed for 16:9, while a Short needs a 9:16 composition; create separate artwork so the subject and text are not cropped.

Does a larger pixel file guarantee more views?

No. The dimensions provide image quality and compatibility; performance also depends on the clarity and relevance of the design, title and audience.

Should I upload the thumbnail from a phone or computer?

Use whichever workflow is convenient, but check the device-specific limit first because mobile video-thumbnail uploads have a lower 2 MB limit than desktop uploads.
