Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Put one direct image URL on each line of a text file, then process that file with a repeatable downloader. For a terminal workflow, use a script or the imgdl project, which documents URL-file input, output folders, worker limits, timeouts, optional waits, thumbnails and a cache. If you prefer a graphical interface, the Chrome Web Store listing for Bulk Image Downloader From URL List describes pasted lists, CSV/TXT import, filtering, filename rules, parallel downloads and ZIP packaging.
The important prerequisite is that each entry points to an image resource, not merely to a web page containing an image. Start with a small sample, choose a dedicated destination, set conservative concurrency and timeout values, then inspect both successful files and failures.
1. Prepare and verify the URL list
Create a UTF-8 plain-text file such as urls.txt, with one URL per line:
https://example.com/images/photo-001.jpg
https://cdn.example.net/assets/diagram.webp
https://images.example.org/banner.png
Remove blank rows and accidental spaces. A page URL such as https://example.com/gallery/1 may return HTML rather than an image; open several entries or inspect their response headers before starting a large batch. URLs that require a login, a short-lived token, a consent step or a JavaScript-generated request may not work as ordinary direct downloads.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Use a dedicated output folder
Save the batch into a new directory so existing files are not confused with this run. Decide how to handle duplicate names: two different URLs can both end in image.jpg. A sequence-based name or a URL-derived name avoids overwriting.
Check rights before downloading
Confirm that your licence, terms of use and local rules allow both downloading and your intended reuse. The extension listing gives a general rights reminder; it is not jurisdiction-specific legal advice.
2. Choose a batch interface
| Criterion | Command-line or Python | Browser extension |
|---|---|---|
| Input | imgdl documents a text-file CLI and a Python API accepting a list or other iterator. | The listing describes pasted URLs plus CSV/TXT input. |
| Setup | Requires a terminal; the package route also requires Python and package installation. | Requires Chrome and extension installation. |
| Controls | Documented worker count, timeout, wait intervals, thumbnails and persistent caching. | Listed parallel downloads, filters, custom filenames, scheduling, conversions and ZIP output. |
| Output | Choose a folder; imgdl names files from a URL hash and can return a failure marker. | Listed custom naming, folders, filtering and ZIP packaging. |
| Evidence | Project documentation, not an independent speed benchmark. | Publisher marketplace listing, not independent feature testing. |
Use the terminal route when you need a rerunnable job, logs or automation. Choose the extension when a visual interface, filtering or a ZIP archive is more convenient.
3. A repeatable Python downloader
Python’s standard library provides urllib.request.urlopen(), which accepts a URL string or a Request object and supports a timeout for blocking HTTP and HTTPS operations. The following script reads one URL per line, downloads concurrently, uses deterministic numbered names, preserves the URL extension when practical and records failures.

for job in as_completed(jobs):

print(status, url, path)
Run it with python download_images.py. Change WORKERS and TIMEOUT for your environment. Eight workers is only a cautious starting point for this example, not a universal best value. The remote host, your connection and its rate limits determine whether more parallel requests help or cause throttling.
Adding retries without duplicating successful files
Keep the output directory and rerun after correcting the failed URLs. The script skips an existing numbered file; for stronger bookkeeping, write failures to a separate text file and make a second input containing only those URLs. The imgdl project documents a persistent cache that skips files already present unless forced, plus failure results represented by a None path.
4. Using the imgdl project
imgdl is designed for this exact pattern: a CLI that takes a URL text file and a Python API that accepts a list or another iterator. Its README documents options for destination, worker count, timeout, optional thumbnails, wait intervals and persistent caching. The README’s 50-worker example is a configuration example, not a recommendation. Follow the project’s current installation and command syntax, then begin with a small list and a modest worker count.
Operational settings to choose
- Workers: increase gradually only when the server and network remain responsive.
- Timeout: long enough for slow images, short enough that one dead host does not stall the batch.
- Wait interval: use a pause when the service signals rate limits or when politeness matters.
- Cache: enable it for reruns; force a refresh only when the remote content changed.
- Thumbnails: request them only when you need smaller derivatives.
5. Browser-extension workflow
Install Bulk Image Downloader From URL List from the Chrome Web Store, then use its documented URL-list input. The listing reports version 3.2, updated 2026-06-07; marketplace details can change.

6. Troubleshooting common failures
HTML saved with an image extension
The URL returned a page, login form, consent response or bot check. Inspect the response content type and open the URL directly. Obtain the real asset URL or an authorised session rather than renaming the HTML file.
HTTP 403 or 401
The server requires authentication, a permitted referrer or a signed URL. Do not attempt to bypass access controls. Use the site’s documented export or supply authorised headers/cookies only where you have permission.
404 or expired links
Remove stale entries, regenerate temporary URLs and rerun only the failed subset.

Timeouts and connection errors
Lower concurrency, increase the timeout for genuinely slow hosts, verify DNS and retry later. Python documents that network operations can raise URL and protocol errors; catch and log them instead of treating the whole batch as successful.
Files overwrite one another
Do not use only the final path component as a filename. Use sequence numbers, a URL hash or the extension’s custom naming controls.
Downloads are unexpectedly slow
There is no established universal worker count or comparative speed result here. More workers can trigger throttling; test a small range while watching failures and server responses.
7. Validate the result
- Compare the number of non-empty output files with the number of input URLs, allowing for intentional skips.
- Open a sample from the beginning, middle and end of the batch.
- Check extensions and content types; an image extension alone does not prove the bytes are an image.
- Review the console or extension failure list and retry only unresolved URLs.
- Keep the original URL list and a failure log so the run can be reproduced.
Or skip the browser setup
If what you actually need is a rendered screenshot of each web page rather than the original image bytes, ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request screenshot API. It is not a replacement for downloading originals, but it avoids installing a browser or extension.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I download images from page URLs instead of direct image URLs?
Not reliably. A page URL commonly returns HTML and may require JavaScript, authentication or consent handling. Extract and verify the actual image request first.
Should I use 50 workers because the imgdl example does?
No. That is an example configuration. Start lower and increase only if the host and network remain healthy; no universal safe or fastest value is established.

Keep a failure list, correct expired or unauthorized URLs, and rerun only those entries. Do not count an HTML error page as a successful image.
Does ScreenshotNeo download the original image file?
No. ScreenshotNeo renders a URL and returns a screenshot or PDF. Use it when a visual capture is the goal, not when you need the source image bytes.
