The exact labels differ between Wix Editor, Wix Studio Editor, and Wix Harmony Editor. For several images, use a gallery rather than placing many separate image elements. Add concise, contextual alt text, publish, and inspect the live page on a phone and desktop.
Choose the workflow that matches your Wix editor
Wix has three relevant editing interfaces. The controls below are not interchangeable, so first identify whether your site opens in the standard Wix Editor, Wix Studio Editor, or Harmony Editor. In every version, uploaded files are kept in the site’s Media Manager so you can reuse them on other pages.
| Editor | Single-image path | Where uploaded files go |
|---|---|---|
| Wix Harmony Editor | Add → Elements → Image | Media Manager |
| Wix Editor | Add Elements → Image → Image → Upload Images | Media Manager |
| Wix Studio Editor | Add Elements → Media, then choose an image element or My Uploads | Media Manager |
Add one image in Wix Harmony Editor
- Open the site in the editor.
- Select Add at the top left, then choose Elements.
- Select the Image icon.
- Click or drag an image element onto the page.
- Choose an existing Media Manager file, or select Upload Image, choose the source, and upload a file.
- Drag the image into position. Use its handles to resize it, then check alignment against nearby sections before publishing.
Harmony stores uploaded images in the site’s Media Manager. That means an image uploaded once can be selected again without re-uploading it.
Upload and place an image in the classic Wix Editor
- Select Add Elements.
- Choose Image, then Image again.
- Select Upload Images.
- Choose a file from your computer, another Wix site, a social network, or a URL.
- When the upload finishes, select the file and choose Add to Page to place it immediately.
- Resize and customize the image in the editor. Keep important subjects inside the visible crop area, especially when the image is used in a narrow column.
Add an image in Wix Studio Editor
- Open Add Elements.
- Choose Media.
- Select My Uploads or add an image element.
- Upload the file to the site’s Media Manager, select it, and place it in the desired section.
- Adjust the image’s dimensions and responsive behavior at the breakpoints you use. Preview tablet and mobile layouts before publishing.
Studio’s responsive layout tools can reposition or resize an image differently at each breakpoint. Verify that the focal point remains visible at the smallest layout you support.

- Full HD Video: Records 1080p video for travel clips, family moments, or simple vlogging

Upload files to the Media Manager before using them
You do not have to upload while editing a page. Open the image picker or Media Manager, choose its upload control, and add files in advance. Once processing finishes, the files are available for image elements, galleries, and other pages in that site. Use descriptive filenames so the library remains searchable; a name such as oak-kitchen-counter.jpg is more useful than IMG_4821.jpg.
Use a gallery for multiple images
A gallery is the better choice when visitors should browse a collection, compare several photos, or see captions in a consistent layout. A group of independent image elements gives you per-image placement freedom, but it takes longer to maintain and can create a heavier first screen.
Wix Editor gallery
- Choose Add Elements, then Gallery.
- Drag a gallery onto the page and select it.
- Choose Change Images, then Add Images.
- Select stock imagery or files already in the site, or upload new images.
- Open the gallery settings to select its layout, captions, navigation, and other options. Available controls depend on the gallery type.
Wix says the number of images affects loading time. If the page has a large collection, prefer one gallery with multiple items rather than several galleries scattered through the page.
Harmony Editor gallery
- Add the Gallery element to the page.
- Select the gallery and choose Manage Items.
- Select + Add Media.
- Choose Media Manager files or upload new ones.
- Select Apply, then adjust the gallery settings.
Wix recommends source images of at least 2560 × 1440 pixels for a Harmony gallery. This is Wix guidance for that workflow, not a universal requirement for every image or screen.
Write useful alt text and captions
Alt text helps people using screen readers understand an informative image and gives the page context when an image cannot be seen. Describe what matters, not every visual detail. For example, “Red ceramic mug beside an open notebook on a wooden desk” is more useful than “mug image.” Keep descriptions concise and accurate.

- Full HD Video: Records 1080p video for travel clips, family moments, or simple vlogging
- Memory Support: Works with Class 10 SD, SDHC, or SDXC cards up to 512GB

Individual image
- Select the image in Wix Editor, Studio Editor, or Harmony Editor.
- Open Settings.
- Enter a description under What’s in the image?.
- Publish the site so the description is present on the live page.
Gallery image
Select the gallery, then open Manage Media or Change Images. Select an image and enter its title. In Wix Pro Gallery, alt text can be different from the title. Other gallery types may use the title as alt text.
A purely decorative image can be marked decorative in Wix’s Accessibility Wizard so assistive technology skips it. Do not mark an image decorative if it is linked or conveys information. Gallery text limits vary by feature; Wix’s legacy gallery guidance lists up to 36 characters for a title and 500 for a description, so do not assume those limits apply to every image field.
Image size, format, and page speed
Wix’s current site-media guidance states that uploaded images are converted to AVIF on the live site. Rendering and browser support can evolve, so treat this as Wix’s stated behavior rather than a promise about every workflow.
Recommended Free Tools
- Compress files larger than 25 MB before uploading, following Wix’s recommendation.
- Keep the first screen light; avoid placing excessive large images above the fold.
- For extensive galleries, enable incremental loading when the gallery offers that setting.
- Prefer one gallery with multiple items over several galleries on one page when the content belongs together.
- Use the editor preview and the published site to check cropping, sharpness, and loading on a phone as well as a desktop.
Do not shrink an image only by dragging its handles and assume the original upload became smaller. Layout dimensions and file size are separate concerns. If a source file is very large, compress or resize it before upload.
Common problems and fixes
The image looks blurry
Start with a higher-resolution source and avoid enlarging a small file. Check whether the editor’s crop or focal-point setting is removing the sharpest area. Re-upload a properly sized source rather than repeatedly stretching the same file.

The image is missing on mobile
Open the mobile or responsive breakpoint and check whether the element is hidden, moved outside the section, or covered by another element. Preview the published URL, not only the editor canvas.
An SVG will not replace an existing image
Wix’s own-image guidance warns that an existing image cannot simply be replaced with an SVG through the Choose Image control. Add the SVG to the site first, add vector art, or replace the vector-art element with the SVG instead.
The gallery is slow
Reduce the number of images shown initially, compress oversized files, and enable incremental loading for an extensive gallery. Keep the first screen focused on the most important content.
Alt text is not visible on the live page
Confirm that the text was entered in the image or gallery’s accessibility field rather than only in a caption, then publish. Reopen the live page and inspect the image with an accessibility checker or screen reader.
The upload fails
Check the file size, connection, and file type, then retry with a compressed copy and a simple filename. If the editor remains stuck, reload the editor and verify whether the file appears in Media Manager before adding it to the page.

- Confirm alt text for informative images and decorative status for decorative ones.
- Publish the site.
- Open the public URL in a private browser window and test the page on a phone and desktop connection.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a rendered image of a Wix page rather than an image element inside the page, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API. It accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and each response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
