Use a fully resolvable asset reference, check local-file permissions and the deployed binary, then test the exact SVG in that environment. SVG rendering is not guaranteed across all wkhtmltopdf builds—especially when an SVG contains nested images or other external resources.
How WickedPDF and wkhtmltopdf handle an SVG
WickedPDF is a Rails wrapper; it invokes the wkhtmltopdf executable to turn HTML into a PDF. As the WickedPDF README puts it, “Wicked PDF uses the shell utility wkhtmltopdf to serve a PDF file to a user from HTML.” The HTML-to-PDF conversion is a separate process from the browser request that may have displayed the page correctly. That means an image reference that works in a browser is not, by itself, proof that the converter can find or render it.
The wkhtmltopdf project describes its command-line tools as rendering HTML into PDF and image formats using Qt WebKit. Standards documentation explains intended SVG behavior, but it does not establish which SVG features a particular Qt WebKit build implements. Treat the deployed executable and the SVG you need to print as the test environment that matters.
1. Identify the executable and version used in deployment
First verify the binary WickedPDF actually launches, including on the production host or container. Development and production can use different executables or packages. The WickedPDF README describes the binary as a separate dependency and notes that its binary gem installs a 0.12.x version; that project documentation is not a guarantee that every installation uses the same version.

wkhtmltopdf --versionIf the command is not on the shell path, check the configured executable path in your application and run that exact file’s --version command. Confirm the same package is present in the process environment that generates PDFs. A local reproduction using another build cannot settle whether the deployed build handles a particular SVG.
2. Make the SVG asset resolvable to the converter
Use a WickedPDF asset or image helper, or give the generated HTML an absolute URL or filesystem path that is valid from the converter’s environment. Follow the helper pattern appropriate to your Rails and WickedPDF versions; do not assume a path that a browser resolves relative to a page will resolve in a PDF render.
WickedPDF recommends precompiling assets used by PDF views. Check that the SVG is present in the deployed asset output and that the final generated HTML contains the expected reference. Then verify the URL or file is reachable from the same machine, container, and user context that runs wkhtmltopdf. Authentication, hostnames, permissions, and asset serving can differ between a Rails request and the converter.
- Inspect the final HTML for the SVG reference rather than relying only on the Rails template.
- For a URL, request it from the conversion environment and verify it returns the SVG, not a login page, error page, or redirect that the converter cannot follow.
- For a local path, confirm the file exists and is readable by the process user.
- Check production asset precompilation and any PDF-specific helper configuration.
3. Check local-file access without opening the whole filesystem
The wkhtmltopdf manual documents local-file access as restricted by default and provides --allow <path> to permit specified paths. WickedPDF documents corresponding configuration fields. If the HTML or SVG loads local resources, identify the exact directory those resources need and allow only that directory. Confirm that your wrapper configuration maps to the options supported by the binary you installed.

Do not enable broad filesystem access merely as a generic SVG fix. If the SVG and all its dependencies are served from reachable HTTP URLs, changing local-file permissions may not address the real failure. Conversely, a local SVG may render while a local image it references remains inaccessible.
4. Isolate SVG-specific rendering failures
Start with a minimal file
Test a minimal SVG with explicit dimensions or a viewBox, a simple shape, and no nested image or external reference. For example, save this as public/images/pdf-test.svg and reference it using a path your PDF view can resolve:

</svg>This is a diagnostic starting point, not a guarantee that every text feature, font, or style will look identical in every build. If the simple graphic appears, add the production SVG’s complexity back in stages.
Test nested and external resources separately
A 2016 issue report describes a specific failure involving a JPEG embedded inside an SVG with wkhtmltopdf 0.12.3 patched Qt. It is a historical example, not a current compatibility matrix. If your artwork contains a base64-embedded raster image, an external image, fonts, CSS, filters, or other dependencies, test those components individually in the deployed binary. The available documentation does not establish universal support or failure for each of these features.

SVG 2 specifies sizing and embedded-resource behavior, including how dimensions and aspect ratio are calculated. That standard describes expected behavior; it does not demonstrate that an older Qt WebKit renderer implements it. Explicit dimensions or a viewBox can make a test easier to interpret, but they cannot repair a missing asset or unsupported rendering behavior.
5. Use a fallback when the exact artwork still fails
If the same SVG remains unreliable after checking asset reachability, permissions, and the binary, try rasterizing that particular graphic to PNG at a resolution suitable for its printed size. This trades resolution independence for predictable pixel output: a PNG can look soft if it is too small for the PDF’s intended print dimensions. Keep the SVG for contexts where it works and use the PNG only for the failing PDF path if that fits your workflow.
Another option is to evaluate a different HTML-to-PDF renderer. Compare it using the actual SVG features and nested resources your documents require, as well as asset resolution, Rails and operating-system compatibility, deployment maintenance, licensing, and cost. The cited material does not provide a current head-to-head test or establish a drop-in replacement, so validate migration requirements rather than assuming another engine will behave identically.

Performance and operational checks
Asset loading is part of PDF generation, so unreachable URLs or unavailable local resources can impede a conversion as well as produce a missing image. Keep PDF assets available to the conversion process and avoid unnecessary external dependencies in SVG artwork. For repeatable debugging, retain a minimal fixture PDF and the exact SVG used in production, then rerun both when changing the binary, deployment image, or asset pipeline.

No source cited here establishes rendering speed, reliability rates, or a cost comparison for alternative engines. Measure conversion time and output fidelity in your own deployment if those factors determine a migration. Avoid treating one successful local render as proof that all SVGs or all production paths are covered.

Does a successful browser preview prove the SVG will appear in a WickedPDF PDF?
No. The HTML-to-PDF conversion runs through wkhtmltopdf in a separate process, which may have different access to assets and a different rendering implementation.
Is wkhtmltopdf 0.12.3’s reported embedded-JPEG problem proof that current SVGs fail?
No. The 2016 report concerns one specific build and nested-image case; it does not establish behavior across current packages or SVG files.
