A page break can cut through a table cell with rowspan because that cell occupies multiple rows. There is no single CSS rule that makes every HTML-to-PDF renderer paginate such cells identically. For a short group, try break-inside: avoid; for long spans, the most predictable print fix is to repeat the label in each row or divide the data into page-sized table groups. Then test the PDF from the exact renderer and version you deploy.
Why a page break through a rowspan is different
In an HTML table, rowspan makes one cell cover multiple rows in the table grid. A page break can therefore intersect that cell’s vertical span rather than falling neatly between independent rows. The grid behavior is defined in the W3C CSS 2.2 Tables specification.
Pagination adds fragmentation: the renderer has to distribute table rows and cell contents among page-sized areas while maintaining the table’s structure. The CSS Table Module Level 3 describes conditional behavior. It says user agents must attempt to keep rows unfragmented in specified circumstances, including when cells spanning the row do not also span subsequent rows; it treats other rows as freely fragmentable. When a freely fragmentable row splits, the model allows content to occupy the available fragment and continue in a later one. This is not a guarantee that every engine will render rowspan borders, backgrounds, or continuations identically.
Repeated table headers can help readers identify columns on later pages, but they do not by themselves resolve how a body cell spanning several rows is fragmented. The specification describes header and footer repetition only under particular conditions, so verify it in your renderer.

Try break avoidance for a short group
If the rows connected by the span and their contents can fit in the remaining printable area of one page, ask the renderer to keep the relevant row or row group together. A small tbody is often a useful unit to test:
@media print {
tbody.keep-together,
tr.keep-together {
break-inside: avoid;
page-break-inside: avoid;
}
}
For example, apply the class to a page-sized or otherwise short group:
<table>
<thead>
<tr><th>Category</th><th>Item</th><th>Notes</th></tr>
</thead>
<tbody class="keep-together">
<tr><td rowspan="2">Hardware</td><td>Board</td><td>Main unit</td></tr>
<tr><td>Adapter</td><td>Power supply</td></tr>
</tbody>
</table>
break-inside: avoid is an avoidance request, not a command that can make oversized content fit. The CSS Fragmentation Module Level 3 defines fragmentation controls; Prince’s paged-media documentation likewise explains that an element longer than a page still has to split. If the group cannot fit, the renderer may split it anyway or move it, potentially leaving whitespace.
The legacy page-break-inside alias can be useful when supporting older engines, but support and behavior are renderer- and version-dependent. WeasyPrint’s API reference lists page-break properties and their CSS 2 aliases for pages; it does not establish how every rowspan case will paginate. Check the documentation for your exact deployed version.

Restructure long spans for predictable print output
Repeat the category label in each printed row
When a label spans many rows, render the label in each row in the print representation instead of relying on one cell continuing across pages. This makes each row more independent at a page boundary and avoids the need to show one long-spanning cell in multiple page fragments. Keep the print version’s labels and reading order clear; if the PDF is used for accessibility or text extraction, review that output separately.
Divide the data into page-sized groups
Split related rows into separate tbody groups or separate tables sized for the page layout. If you use multiple tables, repeat the column headings and keep widths consistent. Page-sized groups make it easier for the renderer to move a complete group when it cannot fit in the remaining space, though the actual PDF still needs inspection.
Maintain a separate print structure when needed
You can keep the semantic table used on screen and provide a print-specific representation without long rowspans. Use this when print pagination requirements conflict with the screen design. Ensure both versions communicate the same relationships and content. A changed visual structure alone does not establish that the PDF’s tagging, reading order, or text extraction is accessible; check those requirements independently.
Test the PDF from the renderer you deploy
A browser preview is not a substitute for inspecting the generated PDF. Record the renderer and version, paper size, margins, fonts, table data, and print CSS so you can reproduce pagination changes. Include cases where a rowspan ends before a page boundary, crosses one boundary, starts near the bottom of a page, and contains more text than fits in the remaining page area.

- Confirm cell text is neither missing nor duplicated across fragments.
- Inspect horizontal and vertical borders where the span meets a page boundary.
- Check cell backgrounds and whether blank space or moved groups are acceptable.
- Verify column headers repeat as intended and do not appear twice on a page.
- Review extracted text and accessibility if the PDF will be consumed by assistive technology or downstream software.
Keep a small representative PDF fixture in regression tests if table pagination is important to your application. Engine behavior is implementation-specific; a result from one renderer or version is not evidence of the output another will produce.
Which remedy should you choose?
| Approach | Best fit | Trade-off to check |
|---|---|---|
| Keep rowspan and request break avoidance | Short groups that can fit on one page | May move a group and leave whitespace; cannot prevent splitting when content is too tall |
| Repeat the label in every printed row | Long category spans and predictable pagination | Adds repeated text; ensure the print version stays clear and accessible |
| Use page-sized row groups or separate tables | Reports organized into explicit page sections | Requires consistent column widths and deliberate repeated headers |
| Change renderer or use a programmatic table API | The current engine cannot produce acceptable output | Revalidate layout, fonts, headers, and PDF behavior; API semantics may differ |
For example, PDFKit documents a cell rowSpan option in its Tables documentation. That is a programmatic table feature, not proof that a browser-based HTML-to-PDF engine handles paginated spanning cells the same way. Changing libraries is not a substitute for checking the resulting PDF.
Troubleshoot common pagination problems
The group still splits despite break-inside: avoid
First check whether the row or row group is taller than the printable area. Avoidance cannot prevent a split that is necessary to fit content. Reduce the group, repeat the label on rows, or create page-sized sections. Confirm the CSS selector applies to the actual table structure and that the renderer version supports the property for that element.

A large blank area appears before the next group
The renderer may be moving an avoided group to the next page because it cannot fit in the remaining space. Use smaller groups or allow a break between groups where that is acceptable. Check the PDF at the target page size and margins, not just a screen-sized preview.
Borders or backgrounds look wrong across the break
These details can vary among engines when a spanning cell is fragmented. Compare the exact deployed engine’s output, and avoid relying on a long rowspan across a page boundary if consistent styling is essential. Repeating the label or splitting the table into separate sections removes dependence on that continuation behavior.
Headers repeat but the category cell looks broken
Header repetition and body-cell fragmentation are different behaviors. Keep the column header setup, but solve the body span separately by restructuring the print table or testing a short break-avoidance group.
A different PDF library handles rowSpan, but pagination remains uncertain
A library option that accepts a row-span value establishes that the API models a spanning cell; it does not establish how it paginates that cell. Build a fixture with the boundary cases above, generate PDFs with the target version, and inspect the result before migrating.

If your goal is a visual capture of a web page rather than a custom paginated report, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return a screenshot or PDF, but a screenshot API is not a replacement for designing and validating complex HTML table pagination in your chosen PDF renderer.
For a direct PDF capture, use the PDF output option documented by ScreenshotNeo; the following request is the documented screenshot call and returns an image:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for PDF output options and API parameters. Its clean-shot process accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. It also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does rowspan automatically prevent a page break?
No. It defines a cell spanning multiple table rows; it does not guarantee that a paginated renderer will keep the entire span on one page.
Will repeating the table header fix a split rowspan cell?
Not by itself. Header repetition concerns column labels, while the spanning body cell has its own fragmentation behavior.
Can ScreenshotNeo validate a custom HTML-to-PDF table layout?
ScreenshotNeo captures pages as images or PDFs, but it does not replace testing the pagination behavior of the HTML-to-PDF renderer that produces your report.
