To hide headers and footers only on a PDF cover page, change the source document before exporting whenever possible. In Microsoft Word, turn on Different First Page. In Google Docs, switch to Pages format and enable Different first page. Both settings leave the normal header and footer on later pages. If you only have the finished PDF, Acrobat can remove headers and footers, but Adobe’s documented command is general removal; it does not establish a cover-only option.
The right method depends on two facts: whether you can edit the original Word or Google document, and whether the cover is the document’s first page or the first page of a separate section.
Choose the method that matches your file

A page break is not a section break. If you need a different treatment in the middle of a document, use a section break so the header and footer can be disconnected from the preceding section.
Microsoft Word: remove the cover header and footer before export
These steps apply to Word for Microsoft 365, Word 2024, 2021, 2019 and 2016, including Mac editions. Labels can vary slightly by version.

- Open the Word source document.
- Double-click the header area or footer area on the first page. This opens the Header & Footer tab.
- Turn on Different First Page.
- Word removes the first-page header and footer content while leaving the regular header and footer available on later pages. Leave the first-page areas blank, or add a deliberately different cover treatment.
- Select Close Header and Footer, then export or save as PDF.

When the cover is not page 1
If the page you want clean is the first page of a later section, place the cursor immediately before that page and choose Layout > Breaks > Next Page. Open the new section’s header and footer, turn off Link to Previous, and delete or edit the content. Repeat the unlinking and editing for both the header and the footer; they are separate controls. A section break prevents the change from propagating backward or forward into linked sections.
Export and check the result
- Use File > Save As or File > Export, choose PDF, and complete the export.
- Open the PDF in a viewer and inspect page 1 at normal and high zoom.
- Check page 2 and a later page to verify that the regular header and footer remain.
- If a page number is still visible on the cover, inspect the footer separately; turning off a header does not turn off a footer.
Google Docs: use “Different first page”
Google Docs makes headers and footers available only in Pages format, not Pageless format.
- Open the document and choose File > Page setup.
- Under Apply to, select Whole document if necessary, then select Pages and save.
- Click the header or footer on the first page.
- Enable Different first page. The first page can now have no header or footer, while later pages retain the regular content.
- Download the result with File > Download > PDF Document (.pdf), then inspect the exported file.

A cover that starts a later section
Insert a section break before the cover page. Click its header or footer and disable Link to previous so the section does not inherit the preceding section’s content. Then enable Different first page for that section or clear its first-page header and footer. If the option appears unavailable, confirm that the file is in Pages format and that you clicked inside the correct section.
Existing PDF in Adobe Acrobat
If the original document is gone, Acrobat’s documented workflow is:
- Open the PDF in Acrobat.
- Choose Edit from the global bar.
- Select Header and footer > Remove.
- Confirm the removal and save the PDF as a new file so the original remains available.
Adobe’s instructions, updated September 23, 2025, describe removing headers and footers from the PDF. They do not say that this command can target only the cover while preserving the same elements on later pages. The same limitation applies to Adobe’s documented batch process, which removes headers and footers from all selected PDFs. See Adobe Acrobat Help.
Why source editing is safer for a cover-only result
In Word or Google Docs, the first-page setting is part of the document’s layout model, so the regular treatment remains defined for later pages during PDF export. A PDF-only removal command works on the finished file and may remove repeated elements globally. If preserving later headers and footers matters, return to the source document or rebuild the PDF from it.

Section breaks, linking and page numbering
Use a section break, not a page break
A page break merely moves text to the next page; it does not create an independent header or footer. Use Next Page section breaks when a cover, appendix or chapter needs different repeating content.
Unlink header and footer independently
Word and Google Docs treat the header and footer as separate regions. Turn off Link to Previous while the cursor is in the header, then repeat while the cursor is in the footer. Otherwise, one of the two may continue to appear.
Keep page numbers intentional
A cover can have no visible page number while the second page begins with “2,” or numbering can begin at “1” on the first content page. Removing the footer does not automatically change numbering. Set numbering in the source application after deciding which convention your publication requires, then verify the exported PDF.
Verification checklist before you distribute the PDF
- Page 1 has no unwanted running header, footer, date, file name or page number.
- Page 2 and a representative later page still show the intended header and footer.
- Both portrait and landscape sections, if present, were checked.
- Links, bookmarks and the cover artwork were not shifted by the layout change.
- The exported PDF was reopened after saving; do not rely only on the editor’s preview.
- The clean PDF has a distinct filename so it is not confused with the source or an earlier export.
Troubleshooting common failures
The cover still shows a header
Open the first-page header directly and confirm that Different First Page is enabled. In a later section, verify that Link to Previous is off. Also check whether the visible text is part of the body, a text box, a watermark or an image rather than a true header.

You probably deleted the footer in a linked section or used Acrobat’s general removal command. Undo the change, restore the source footer, and isolate the cover with a first-page setting or an unlinked section before exporting again.
“Different first page” is missing in Google Docs
Change the document from Pageless to Pages in File > Page setup. Headers and footers are not available in Pageless format.
A later cover inherits the previous section’s content
Insert a Next Page section break immediately before it, click inside both the new header and new footer, and disable Link to Previous in each. Then clear the first-page regions.
Acrobat removed more than intended
The cited Acrobat workflow is not documented as cover-only. Restore the original PDF and edit the Word or Google source instead. If no source exists, make a copy and use a PDF editor that explicitly offers page-range or object-level editing, then inspect every page.

The PDF looks correct in the editor but not after export
Close and reopen the exported PDF in a separate viewer. Look for headers or footers embedded in the page background, master page, watermark layer or an image. Those objects are not controlled by the normal header/footer setting.
