The reliable method is simple: upload the screenshot file to an image host or cloud-storage service, set its access permission, copy the service’s share URL, and test that URL in a private window before sending it. The link is usually a bearer credential—anyone who obtains it may be able to view, download, or forward the image—so remove sensitive details first and choose the visibility setting deliberately.
Convert a screenshot to a link in six steps
- Find or capture the file. Locate the PNG, JPEG, or WebP screenshot on your phone or computer. If you have not taken it yet, use the device’s built-in screenshot command and note where it saves the file.
- Choose where the file should live. Use an image host when you need a straightforward image URL. Use a cloud photo or file service when the screenshot belongs in an existing account, folder, or collaboration workflow.
- Upload the screenshot. On Imgur, select New post, browse to the image, or drag it into the upload area. Its mobile apps also provide an upload flow (Imgur’s upload guide).
- Set access before copying. Decide whether the item is public, hidden/link-only, or restricted to named people. A hidden or link-only setting reduces discovery but does not make the image confidential.
- Copy the URL. Use the service’s Copy link, Get share links, or equivalent command. Imgur documents copying an image address on desktop and using the content menu or a long-press in its mobile browser and apps (locating an image URL).
- Test and send. Open the URL in an incognito/private window, or ask an intended recipient to test it. Confirm that it opens the image (rather than an account-only page) and that the permission is appropriate.
Pick a service that matches the link you need
The important differences are discoverability, control after sharing, download behavior, and how well the service fits your existing workflow. Interface names and defaults can change, so check the current sharing panel before publishing.

Imgur: fastest path to a direct image URL
Upload with New post, choose the image, and then use Get share links or the image-address command. Select Hidden when you do not want the post listed publicly. Hidden is not private: anyone who receives the URL can potentially view and download the image, and the URL can be forwarded.
Google Photos: convenient for albums and existing libraries
Open the photo or album, choose the sharing control, and create a link. Treat the link as transferable access. Google’s guidance says a shared link may be passed along; turning link sharing off and back on resets the link, but it does not recall copies or downloads already made. The service also notes that a person removed from an album can still use the old URL if link sharing remains enabled (control details).

Dropbox: automatic screenshot saving on supported desktop setups
Dropbox documents a screenshot workflow that can automatically save screenshots to a Dropbox account and automatically copy either a link or the image itself, depending on your settings (Dropbox screenshot instructions). After capture, inspect the destination folder and permission panel before distributing the copied URL.
Protect information before you upload
Read the screenshot as if a stranger will receive it. Crop or redact passwords, one-time authentication codes, private messages, financial details, account numbers, addresses, and personal information. Do not rely on a “hidden” label to protect secrets: a bearer link can be copied and shared.
- Public: suitable only for material you are comfortable having discovered through a service profile or search.
- Link-only/hidden: less discoverable, but anyone with the URL may be able to view or download it.
- Restricted: preferred for confidential work when the service supports named users, sign-in requirements, or an expiration policy.
Google Photos’ sharing guidance tells developers to disclose what is shared, who can view it, and that anyone with a shared-album link can access the album (Google Photos API UX guidelines). Apply the same principle when sending a one-image link: tell recipients what the URL contains and who is expected to see it.

How to test a link before sending it
- Copy the URL without adding tracking text or punctuation.
- Open a private/incognito browser window where you are not signed in.
- Check that the image loads at the intended size and that no account invitation is unexpectedly required.
- Try the URL from a different network or ask the intended recipient to confirm access.
- If the link exposes more than the single screenshot (for example, an entire album or folder), change the share target and create a new link.
What happens when you revoke sharing?
Disabling a link normally stops future access through that service, but it cannot retrieve a file that someone already downloaded, copied, or captured. Google Photos explicitly documents that stopping sharing does not delete copies or downloads (stop-sharing guidance), and Imgur warns that viewers can download direct-URL images (privacy settings). For sensitive material, assume every authorized viewer can retain a copy.

Troubleshooting common failures
The recipient sees “access denied” or a sign-in screen
The link is restricted to your account, organization, or named users. Reopen the service’s share panel, select the intended audience, create a new link, and retest while signed out. If the image is confidential, keep the restriction and invite the recipient instead of weakening it.
The URL opens a page, not the image
You copied a post, album, or file-page URL rather than the image address. Use the service’s image-address or share-link command. For Imgur, follow its documented desktop or mobile URL-location steps (URL help).

The link worked yesterday but not today
The owner may have disabled sharing, reset the link, moved the file, or changed folder permissions. Open the item while signed in, inspect its current sharing state, and issue a new URL. A reset invalidates the old route only where the service supports that behavior.
The image is visible, but private details remain
Link permissions cannot redact pixels. Delete the upload, edit the original to remove the details, and upload a clean replacement. Assume anyone who previously viewed or downloaded the first version may retain it.

Check the HTTP status and the X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, and failed loads are identified as non-clean outcomes and are not billed; change the target URL or capture settings, then retry. Use a sufficiently long client timeout for pages that load slowly.

What format should I upload?
