What’s actually slowing this PC down?

The fix depends on how the PDF is made. Highcharts chart export, the chart menu’s print command, browser “Print to PDF,” and a server-side renderer use different pagination controls. For a chart-only export, set an explicit exporting.sourceWidth and exporting.sourceHeight that fit the usable page area. For a whole-page PDF, control page breaks in the browser or PDF renderer instead; Highcharts’ printMaxWidth does not control whole-page printing.
Identify the PDF path before changing Highcharts
Reproduce the exact action that creates the damaged file. The same chart can be paginated by several independent layers:
| Path | What is being paginated | Where to fix chopping |
|---|---|---|
| Chart export | The chart rendered as an image or PDF | Export dimensions and the PDF page-placement code |
| Chart menu → Print chart → Save as PDF | A print-oriented chart layout | Chart print settings, including printMaxWidth |
| Browser print of the whole page | Your complete HTML document | Browser print layout, CSS, and page-break rules |
| Server-side renderer | A server-generated document or PDF | The renderer’s viewport, paper size, margins, and pagination |
A setting from one row should not be expected to repair a different row. Record the Highcharts version, export modules, PDF library, paper size, orientation, margins, and whether surrounding page content is included.
Make a chart-only export fit one PDF page
Highcharts documents a size priority order for exported charts. The highest-priority values are exporting.sourceWidth and exporting.sourceHeight. If they are absent, explicit chart.width and chart.height are used; next comes the pixel size of the chart container; if none is available, the documented default is 600 × 400 pixels.

Choose dimensions for the usable page, not the physical sheet. Subtract left and right margins, headers, footers, and any neighboring content. A landscape page may be appropriate for a wide chart, but changing orientation belongs to the PDF layer unless your export path exposes it.
Set an intentional exported size
Highcharts.chart('container', {
exporting: {
sourceWidth: 900,
sourceHeight: 520
},
chart: {
// Optional fallback for on-screen layout
width: 900,
height: 520
},
title: { text: 'Revenue by quarter' },
series: [{
name: 'Revenue',
data: [12, 18, 16, 24]
}]
});
Use one source of truth where possible. If a responsive CSS rule changes the container after the chart loads, the explicit source dimensions prevent the export from inheriting an unexpectedly narrow or tall size. Check the generated SVG or export request and verify that the final dimensions are the values you intended.
When scaling is not the right answer
Reducing a chart until it fits can make labels unreadable. If the page contains several charts or explanatory text, export each chart separately and place the outputs deliberately in a PDF layout. If the chart must remain at a fixed readable size, use additional pages rather than forcing it into a smaller rectangle.
Local client-side PDF export: control pages in the PDF layer
Highcharts’ local PDF workflow is opt-in. It requires offline-exporting.js plus the third-party jsPDF and svg2pdf libraries. Highcharts support guidance indicates that extra code can choose a PDF page size and manage multiple pages. That means chart dimensions alone do not guarantee that a page will not split: the code that creates the PDF decides where the SVG is placed and when a new page is added.
- Load the Highcharts export and offline-exporting modules, then load compatible
jsPDFandsvg2pdfversions. - Set
sourceWidth/sourceHeight(or chart dimensions) to the intended rendered size. - Define the PDF paper size, orientation, and margins in your
jsPDFcode. - Before adding the chart, calculate the remaining page height. If the chart will not fit, add a page or export it as a separate PDF.
- Open the resulting PDF at 100% and inspect labels, clipping, and page boundaries; browser zoom can hide a placement error.
The commonly cited Highcharts support example was modified on 16 May 2019. Treat it as historical guidance and validate method names and options against the versions installed in your application. Do not copy an old snippet unchanged into a current build.

Chart-menu printing and the limits of printMaxWidth
printMaxWidth is designed for the chart menu’s print action. It resizes an overly wide chart for printing. Highcharts explicitly states that it does not apply when printing the entire web page. If your workflow is browser Print → Save as PDF with the surrounding document included, changing this option will not prevent a page break.
For chart-menu printing, set a value that fits the printable width, then inspect the print preview. For whole-page printing, use the browser’s paper size, scale, margins, and background settings, together with print CSS. Keep the chart in a block that can move as a unit where the browser supports it:
@media print {
.highchart-card {
break-inside: avoid;
page-break-inside: avoid; /* legacy browser name */
}
}
This CSS is a request to the browser, not a Highcharts guarantee. A block taller than one page cannot be kept intact without overflow or scaling, so reduce its content, choose a larger paper size, or split it intentionally.

Whole-page browser PDFs: diagnose the layout owner
When the PDF includes headings, tables, navigation, or multiple charts, pagination belongs to the browser’s print engine. Check these causes:
- Chart wider than the printable area: reduce the print viewport or set a print-only width that fits between margins.
- Chart taller than one page: allow a controlled break before the chart, or render it on its own page.
- Late font or image loading: wait until fonts, images, and chart animations are complete before invoking print.
- Transforms and positioned ancestors: test without CSS transforms or absolute positioning; they can produce unexpected print boxes.
- Headers and footers: disable browser-added headers/footers or account for them in the usable height.
Use print preview at the target paper size rather than judging from the responsive screen. A server renderer may use a different default viewport, font set, and margin model than a desktop browser, so reproduce the production renderer when debugging.

Server-side rendering and Highcharts’ export server
Highcharts provides a server path that accepts chart configurations or SVG and uses Puppeteer to render PDFs and other formats. This is useful when you need repeatable, server-controlled viewport and paper settings. Configure page size, margins, and page management in that pipeline, and separately evaluate deployment, browser-process limits, and data-handling requirements for your application. A server renderer cannot repair a chart that is already clipped by an incorrectly sized source SVG; validate both the chart dimensions and the PDF page settings.
Legacy PhantomJS output and dpiCorrection
If an older PhantomJS-based converter is still producing the PDF and dimensions do not match the page, Highcharts’ legacy guide suggests investigating dpiCorrection. This is a legacy workaround, not a universal fix for current export paths. First establish that PhantomJS is actually in the pipeline; do not add the option to a modern browser, offline-exporting, or Puppeteer workflow without evidence that it applies.
A practical diagnostic checklist
- Name the path: chart export, chart print, whole-page browser print, local PDF code, server renderer, or legacy PhantomJS.
- Capture dimensions: log source width/height, chart width/height, container pixels, viewport, paper size, and margins.
- Compare usable space: subtract all margins and surrounding content from the page dimensions.
- Remove variables: disable animation, wait for fonts/images, and test a single chart with no surrounding CSS.
- Apply the owner’s control: export dimensions for chart sizing; PDF code or print CSS for pagination; renderer settings for server output.
- Validate the exact versions: Highcharts, offline-exporting, jsPDF, svg2pdf, Puppeteer, and the browser engine.
- Test representative charts: wide labels, long legends, data labels, responsive rules, and a chart taller than one page.
Common symptoms, causes, and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Only the right side is missing | Export or print width exceeds usable page width | Set source dimensions or print width to fit after margins; use landscape when appropriate. |
| The chart starts on one page and continues on the next | Whole-page or PDF-layer pagination | Move the chart as a unit, add a deliberate page break, or export/place it separately. |
printMaxWidth changes nothing |
The workflow prints the whole page | Change browser print CSS or the PDF renderer; the option is chart-menu-specific. |
| Local export fails or produces a blank PDF | Missing/incompatible offline-exporting, jsPDF, or svg2pdf dependency | Confirm all modules load and verify compatibility against current library documentation. |
| Server PDF differs from local PDF | Different viewport, fonts, margins, or browser engine | Configure and test the production renderer rather than relying on desktop preview. |
| Legacy output has incorrect physical dimensions | PhantomJS DPI mismatch | Confirm the legacy path, then investigate dpiCorrection; do not generalize it to modern paths. |
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is a clean screenshot or PDF of a page containing the chart, ScreenshotNeo can handle the browser session through one request. It accepts consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. It also offers an MCP server for AI clients, with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools.
For API details and all capture options, see the ScreenshotNeo documentation. A direct WebP request looks like this:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
You can request full-page capture with lazy images, a CSS-selected element, a device or custom viewport, retina scale, PDF paper and margins, custom CSS or JavaScript, waits, blocked resources, headers, cookies, authentication, timezone, geolocation, resizing, caching, signed links, asynchronous jobs, webhooks, bulk capture, and usage data. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
FAQ
Will increasing chart height stop a PDF page break?
No. Height controls the chart’s rendered size. Whether it crosses a page boundary is decided by the print or PDF layout that places that chart.

Should I always use a fixed 600 × 400 chart?
No. 600 × 400 is the documented fallback when no source, chart, or container dimensions are supplied. Select dimensions from your target page and readability requirements.
Can one CSS rule guarantee an unbroken chart in every browser?
No. break-inside: avoid is advisory, and an element taller than a page cannot physically remain on one page without scaling or overflow.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Highcharts provide a universal “keep chart together” PDF option?
No. Pagination depends on the export, print, browser, or server PDF path, so the controlling setting is pipeline-specific.
What should I record when reporting a clipping bug?
Include the exact export action, Highcharts and PDF-library versions, paper size, margins, viewport, chart/container dimensions, and a minimal reproducible chart.
