To screenshot one monitor in Windows 10, press Windows+Shift+S, choose Rectangle, and drag across the monitor you want. Click the Snipping Tool (or Snip & Sketch) notification to annotate, copy, or save the capture. Do not use plain PrtScn or Ctrl+PrtScn for this job: in a multi-monitor setup they can capture the entire virtual desktop.
The reliable one-monitor method
- Move the content you need to the monitor you intend to capture.
- Press Windows+Shift+S. A dimmed snipping overlay appears.
- Choose Rectangle in the mode bar.
- Place the pointer at one corner of the target monitor. Keep the pointer on that display while you press and hold the mouse button, then drag to the opposite corner. Cover the monitor’s full visible bounds.
- Release the button. Windows places the snip on the clipboard and shows a notification.
- Click the notification to open the editor. Use the editor’s Save or Save as command to write a file, or press Ctrl+C if another application only needs the image from the clipboard.
This is a manual crop of the selected display, so it works even when monitors have different resolutions, scaling, orientations, or positions in the Windows desktop arrangement. Accuracy comes from starting and ending the rectangle exactly at the display edges.
Choose the capture mode that matches your goal
| Mode or shortcut | What it captures | Best use | Where the result goes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows+Shift+S → Rectangle | Any rectangular area, including one complete monitor | A whole display or a precisely bounded region | Clipboard plus Snipping Tool notification/editor |
| Windows+Shift+S → Window | The selected application window | One app without the surrounding desktop | Clipboard plus editor |
| Windows+Shift+S → Freeform | A hand-drawn irregular shape | Isolating a non-rectangular area | Clipboard plus editor |
| Alt+PrtScn | The active foreground window | A quick window-only capture when the correct app is focused | Clipboard |
| PrtScn | The full screen or virtual screen in a multi-monitor arrangement | Capturing all connected displays | Clipboard or the behavior configured on that Windows build |
| Ctrl+PrtScn | The entire virtual screen according to Microsoft’s multi-monitor documentation | A full-desktop capture, not an isolated monitor | Clipboard |
Use Window mode when the object is an application window rather than an entire display. It avoids a manual border-to-border drag, but it cannot include other windows, the desktop background, or parts of the taskbar outside that window.
Saving, copying, and editing the snip
Save a file
Select the Snipping Tool notification immediately after the drag. In the editor, choose Save or Save as, select a destination, and confirm the filename. Current Snipping Tool versions can automatically save captures to the Screenshots folder, while some Windows 10 builds present the explicit save command first. Follow the controls shown by the version installed on your PC.

- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors

- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
Copy without saving
The rectangle is copied to the clipboard when you release the mouse button. Press Ctrl+V in an email, document, chat, or graphics application to paste it. This is useful for a one-time report where creating a separate file is unnecessary.
Annotate before exporting
Opening the notification gives you the editor for markup, cropping, and sharing. Add highlights or pen marks there, then save the edited result. If you need the untouched pixels, paste or save the original before making annotations.
Why Print Screen often includes both monitors
Windows treats connected displays as one virtual screen for several legacy Print Screen shortcuts. Microsoft documents plain PrtScn and Ctrl+PrtScn as whole-screen captures in multi-monitor configurations. That virtual-screen rectangle can contain the left, right, above, or below monitor, including the empty desktop area created by different monitor shapes.
For an isolated display, use the selectable snip instead. The overlay lets you define the exact rectangle rather than accepting the virtual desktop bounds. Windows+PrtScn is also not a dependable one-monitor workflow; use Windows+Shift+S and Rectangle when display isolation matters.

Capturing only the second monitor
There is no separate “second monitor” shortcut. The same sequence works regardless of which display is primary:
- Move the pointer to the second monitor.
- Press Windows+Shift+S.
- Select Rectangle.
- Drag from one corner of that monitor to the opposite corner without crossing onto the other display.
- Open the notification and save or copy the result.
If the second display is arranged above or to the left of the primary monitor, the physical location does not change the method. Begin and end on the visible edges of the intended display.
When Window mode or Alt+PrtScn is better
Use Window mode for one application
Choose Windows+Shift+S, then Window, and click the application you want. This captures that window’s frame and contents, not every pixel on its monitor. It is preferable for documenting a dialog, browser window, or editor while excluding unrelated desktop material.
Use Alt+PrtScn for the focused window
Click the target application to make it the foreground window, then press Alt+PrtScn. Microsoft defines this shortcut as a capture of the foreground window. It goes to the clipboard, so paste it into another app or open an editor that accepts clipboard images. It does not capture the complete monitor.

Troubleshooting
The shortcut does nothing
- Press the three keys together: hold the Windows logo key and Shift, then tap S.
- If a keyboard uses a function layer, try the manufacturer’s Fn combination for the Windows or Print Screen keys.
- Open Start and launch Snipping Tool manually, then use its capture control. Windows 10 releases may label the older editor Snip & Sketch.
The result contains part of the other monitor
- Retry with Rectangle rather than Window or a Print Screen shortcut.
- Start and finish the drag on the same physical monitor. Do not begin in the gap or on the neighboring display.
- Zoom the desktop view mentally by following the dimmed overlay boundary; release only after the selection outline reaches the target display’s far edge.
The capture is only an application window
You probably selected Window mode or pressed Alt+PrtScn. Repeat the process with Rectangle and draw around the entire monitor.
No notification appears
The snip may still be on the clipboard. Try Ctrl+V in an image editor or document. If nothing pastes, open Snipping Tool from Start and make a new capture, then check Windows notification settings for the app.
The image was saved but cannot be found
Use the editor’s explicit Save as command and note the folder shown in the dialog. Depending on the Windows 10 build, automatic saving may use the Screenshots folder, while older Snip & Sketch workflows rely on a manual save.
The monitor has a different orientation or scaling
Do not try to calculate coordinates or use a full-virtual-screen shortcut. The rectangle overlay is drawn over the displayed desktop, so drag along the visible portrait, landscape, or scaled monitor edges.

- INCREASED VERSATILITY: Connect to more; Plug devices straight into your monitor for increased flexibility, making your computing environment even more convenient
Performance and reliability considerations
- Precision: Rectangle mode is precise only to the boundary you draw. A one-pixel border or a missed edge can be corrected by repeating the snip and using the editor’s crop controls.
- Scope: Window mode is more repeatable for a single app; Rectangle mode is the only built-in choice here that can include the whole monitor.
- Workflow speed: The keyboard overlay is faster than opening a full image editor, while the notification gives you a deliberate point at which to annotate or save.
- Destination: Clipboard capture is temporary. Save the image when you need a file that survives a reboot, clipboard replacement, or closing the source application.
- Multi-monitor layouts: A virtual desktop can have gaps or offsets between displays. Those gaps are another reason to select the physical monitor manually instead of accepting a full-screen capture.
Or skip the browser setup
If what you really need is a screenshot of a website rather than the pixels of a physical Windows monitor, ScreenshotNeo makes the capture a single HTTP request. It is a website screenshot API, not a replacement for Windows+Shift+S, so it cannot capture your local desktop or an application window.
For a web page, the cURL request below returns an image response (WebP in this example):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for all request parameters. The same request in Python is:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' }); const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo can capture full pages with lazy images, a CSS-selected element, a chosen device or viewport, dark mode, retina scale, PDFs, HTML/CSS, custom JavaScript, clicks, waits, hidden selectors, blocked ads or trackers, custom headers and cookies, geolocation and timezone, transparent backgrounds, resizing, caching, signed image links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk requests for up to 100 URLs, usage data, and an OpenAPI specification. It accepts the parameter names used by other screenshot APIs, which can simplify migration.
