Start by listing every destination’s exact dimensions, aspect ratio, file type, resolution needs, and safe areas. Then preserve the original, generate a separate copy for each materially different shape, and rework the layout in each copy before exporting. A resize tool can create canvases quickly; it cannot guarantee that text, crops, or visual hierarchy will suit every destination without review.
What to collect before resizing
Make an output checklist before opening a resize tool. Use the destination’s own specifications when available; dimensions and format expectations can differ between a social placement, a web banner, a presentation slide, and a printed page.
- Dimensions and units: Record width and height in pixels for screen output, or physical units for print. Include any required minimum resolution.
- Aspect ratio and orientation: Calculate width divided by height, and mark each output as portrait, landscape, or square. The ratio—not just the pixel count—determines whether content must be cropped or the composition rebuilt.
- Safe areas: Note margins or regions where logos, text, or other essential information must remain visible. A platform may cover parts of an image with interface elements, or a print process may trim edges.
- File requirements: Record the required format, transparency needs, and any scale or resolution setting available in the export tool.
- Content priorities: Identify the message, logo, subject, and call to action that must remain prominent in every version.
A compact checklist might look like this:
| Output | Dimensions | Ratio and orientation | Format and notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Feed graphic | Use the platform’s current pixel specification | Record the specified ratio | Check safe areas and whether transparency is needed |
| Story or vertical placement | Use the platform’s current pixel specification | Portrait; record the specified ratio | Keep essential text clear of interface overlays |
| Website banner | Use the site’s component dimensions | Usually a wide canvas; confirm the exact ratio | Check crop behavior at desktop and mobile widths |
| Print or PDF | Record physical size and any minimum resolution | Match the page orientation | Confirm PDF or image requirements with the printer or recipient |
These are checklist categories, not universal specifications: obtain the actual values for the destination rather than assuming one size fits every service or placement.
How to resize one design into a set of outputs
1. Preserve a master copy
Keep an untouched source design. Duplicate it before making a new size, especially when the target ratio differs substantially from the original. A master protects the approved layout and gives you a clean starting point if a resized version becomes difficult to repair.
Prefer a workflow that creates a copy instead of overwriting the source. Canva documents a “Copy & resize” path, resize bundles for multiple selected sizes, and an API operation that creates a new design. The precise options and plan eligibility can change, so check Canva’s current help documentation before relying on a specific feature.

2. Create the target canvases
Use a preset when it matches the destination’s current specification. Otherwise, enter the exact custom width and height. When a tool offers multiple sizes or a resize bundle, use it to generate first-pass versions for related placements; create separate copies for outputs that need distinctly different composition.
For a custom ratio, decide whether the entire original must remain visible or the new canvas must be filled edge to edge. Keeping everything visible may leave unused space. Filling the new shape may crop the edges. Canva documents controls to lock or unlock aspect ratio for custom dimensions. Whichever tool you use, inspect the resulting canvas instead of assuming the original arrangement will transfer cleanly.
3. Recompose each version
Treat every resized canvas as a layout pass, not a finished export. Adjust the text, logo, and important imagery for the new shape. Check line breaks, spacing, contrast, crop, safe areas, and the order in which the viewer notices elements.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Move or resize a headline if it wraps into too many lines or competes with the main image.
- Reposition a logo if the new crop pushes it toward an edge or into a likely overlay area.
- Change the crop or image placement so the subject remains visible and recognizable.
- Remove or rearrange secondary details if the smaller canvas makes the hierarchy unclear.
- Check whitespace: a layout that felt balanced in a wide format can feel crowded or empty in a tall one.
Do not stretch artwork to force it into a different ratio. If full coverage is required, crop deliberately and keep critical information within the destination’s safe area. If nothing may be cropped, use the extra canvas intentionally—such as by extending a background or repositioning content—rather than leaving accidental gaps.

4. Export for the intended use
Choose format and scale according to the destination and the available controls in your design tool. Format support can vary by design type and export method, so verify the output options for the specific document rather than assuming every format is available everywhere.
Canva’s export API documentation describes PDF, JPEG, PNG, GIF, PowerPoint, MP4, and other formats, with availability dependent on design type and pages. Its documented image behavior preserves the design’s aspect ratio when only a width or height is specified; when both dimensions are supplied and do not match the design ratio, the documented behavior defaults to the larger dimension. For video, the documented export preserves the design’s ratio while using the chosen target resolution. These are Canva API behaviors, not universal rules for other export tools.
Figma’s export controls cover PNG, JPG, SVG, and PDF. Its help documentation says image export defaults to 72 DPI and calculates export DPI by multiplying 72 by the chosen scale; the described SVG and PDF controls are limited to 1x. These notes apply to Figma’s documented controls and should not be treated as general export rules.
5. Inspect the actual files
Open every exported file. Confirm its pixel dimensions or physical page size and file type, then inspect text and edges at the size and context in which it will appear. If practical, view it in the destination placement or at the intended print size. Check that fonts, transparency, crops, margins, and contrast survived export.

How to resize a design for Instagram and other platforms
Use the platform and placement’s current specifications rather than relying on a remembered template. “Instagram” alone does not identify one output: a feed post, story, reel cover, profile image, or advertisement may use different proportions or have different interface overlays. The same is true of other platforms and placements.
- Write down the exact dimensions and ratio for each placement you plan to use.
- Duplicate the master once for each distinct ratio or composition family.
- Generate the canvases with presets where they match, or enter the exact dimensions as custom sizes.
- Reposition the subject, headline, logo, and call to action for each canvas; do not assume the automatic crop is suitable.
- Check safe areas against the destination interface and inspect the final exports at their expected display size.
If two placements share a ratio, they may be able to use the same composition at different export sizes, but verify resolution and crop behavior. Different ratios deserve separate visual checks even if the resize tool generates them in one batch.
How to change a design to custom dimensions
Choose custom dimensions when a destination gives exact values or no suitable preset is available. Enter width and height in the requested units, confirm whether the aspect ratio is locked, and review the resulting canvas before moving content. Changing one dimension while preserving the ratio is different from entering both dimensions and forcing a new shape.

Which resizing workflow fits your tool?
| Tool or workflow | Documented fit | Important constraint | Best comparison questions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Canva Magic Resize / Magic Switch | Creates resized designs at multiple sizes; documentation describes resize bundles, custom dimensions, and copy-and-resize. | The help page lists plan eligibility and resize limits, and says the feature is not supported in Canva Docs. Limits and plan access can change. | Does the available plan cover your sizes? Can you generate a bundle and preserve a copy? Are presets or custom dimensions a better fit? |
| Adobe Express | Offers preset and custom image or page sizes. | The page-resize help says batch resizing multiple pages is not supported; the page feature is listed for Premium plans. | Do you need a single-page workflow? Are custom controls and any generative expansion setting appropriate? Do you need batch processing? |
| Figma export controls | Useful when the design is already in Figma and the goal is exporting files at a chosen scale or format. | Export scale controls are not the same as adapting a whole composition to a new aspect ratio. Figma’s help documents restrictions for SVG and PDF scale controls. | Are you exporting an asset or adapting a complete page? Do you need vector output, scale choices, or suffix controls? |
Choose based on the work you actually need. A tool that exports one asset at several scales may be sufficient when the composition does not change; a tool with custom sizing and editable copies is more useful when each target needs layout adjustments. Check current plan access and feature limits in the tool’s own documentation because those details may change.
Quality, time, and failure checks
What automation handles well
Automated resizing is useful for creating canvases and repeatable first-pass versions. Presets can reduce setup for common formats, and multi-size workflows can save time when producing a related set. They do not determine whether a crop cuts off a subject, whether text is readable, or whether a composition still communicates clearly.
Where manual review matters most
- Ratio changes: Look for cropped content, unintended blank space, or an awkward balance between image and text.
- Small outputs: Confirm that fine print, thin lines, and secondary details remain legible.
- Overlays and trim: Keep key content out of interface-covered or print-trimmed regions.
- Export differences: Check dimensions, format, transparency, and any scale setting in the actual file.
- Batch results: Review every output, not just the first one; each ratio can create a different layout problem.
Keep the process efficient
Group outputs by ratio and design a strong composition for each group instead of manually rebuilding every export from scratch. Name files with the destination and dimensions so they can be matched to the checklist. Save the revised layout as an editable copy before exporting, and keep the master separate from production versions.

| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Text is cut off or awkwardly wrapped | The new canvas changed available width or moved content into a crop or unsafe area. | Open the editable resized copy, adjust text size or line breaks, and reposition it within the safe area before exporting again. |
| The subject is cropped | The output ratio is narrower or taller, or the tool filled the canvas by cropping. | Change the image crop or placement. If all source content must remain visible, choose a fit that leaves space and use that space deliberately. |
| The new canvas has blank bands or gaps | The source ratio was preserved inside a differently shaped canvas. | Extend or replace the background, reposition the design, or use a considered crop if the destination permits it. |
| A batch action is unavailable | The feature may not support that document type, page count, plan, or batch workflow. | Check the tool’s current help and plan eligibility. For Adobe Express page resizing, the documentation says multiple pages cannot be batch resized. |
| The downloaded file has unexpected dimensions or format | Export controls may apply aspect-ratio behavior or format restrictions specific to the tool and design type. | Review export settings and inspect the file properties. For Canva API image exports, check the documented behavior when one or both dimensions are supplied. |
| Vector or PDF output ignores a scale choice | The export tool may impose format-specific scale limits. | Check the tool’s documentation for the selected format; Figma’s cited help describes SVG and PDF export controls limited to 1x. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Does resizing a design automatically make it ready for every platform?
No. It creates a new canvas or output, but you still need to inspect crops, text wrapping, safe areas, and visual hierarchy in each version.
Can I resize to a custom width and height?
Yes, in tools that provide custom dimensions. Enter the destination’s exact values and check whether the tool locks the aspect ratio.
Should I keep one file or make several versions?
Keep an untouched master and create editable copies for materially different output shapes. That preserves the source while allowing each layout to be adjusted.
