“Exit with code 1 due to network error: ProtocolUnknownError” means wkhtmltopdf could not load a resource while pdfkit was converting your document. For local HTML, CSS, images, or fonts, first capture verbose output, identify the failed path, and test enable-local-file-access. That option fixes one documented local-file case, but it will not repair an unreachable, authenticated, redirected, or otherwise unsupported remote URL.
What the error actually means
pdfkit is only the Python wrapper. wkhtmltopdf launches the conversion, loads the HTML and every referenced resource, then reports the failure; pdfkit surfaces that report as a Python exception. The message does not identify the URL or file that failed. “Network error” therefore does not necessarily mean your internet connection is down: a local stylesheet blocked by the converter can produce the same top-level wording.
A reported pdfkit issue describes a local HTML conversion that began working after --enable-local-file-access was added. Treat that as a plausible diagnosis when your document references local assets, not as a universal cure. Remote resources can fail because the URL is inaccessible, redirects somewhere unexpected, requires authentication, or uses a resource URL the installed wkhtmltopdf build cannot handle.
Start with evidence, not another option
Turn on verbose output
Pass verbose=True so wkhtmltopdf’s own warnings and load messages are visible:

)Run this from the same user account and working directory as the failing application. Look for the first resource warning, not merely the final “ProtocolUnknownError” line. The first warning commonly reveals a missing local path, a blocked file, a redirect, or a host that cannot be reached.
Inspect the generated command
pdfkit can build a PDFKit object whose command shows the exact wkhtmltopdf invocation. Reproduce that command directly; this separates wrapper configuration from converter behavior.

If it succeeds, compare the Python process’s working directory, environment, executable path, and options with the direct invocation.
Follow the resource that failed
Local CSS, images, and fonts
Open the HTML and check every relative and absolute href, src, and font URL. Relative paths resolve from the document location or converter context, which may differ from the directory you expected when a web server previously served the page. Confirm that each file exists, is readable by the conversion user, and has the spelling and capitalization used in the markup.

Remote resources
For an https:// stylesheet, image, script, or font, check the exact URL from the converter’s host. Follow redirects, verify that the endpoint is reachable without an interactive login, and determine whether it requires cookies, an Authorization header, or a particular user agent. A browser session that is already authenticated can load a resource that a headless converter cannot.

Unsupported resource schemes
Inspect unusual URLs such as custom schemes, malformed data, or references generated by client-side code. wkhtmltopdf must be able to fetch the resource with the capabilities of your installed build; changing a local-file option cannot make an unsupported remote scheme valid.
Allow local files when the document needs them
If verbose output shows that local assets are blocked, pass the wkhtmltopdf flag through pdfkit:

)pdfkit option names omit the leading --. For a flag with no value, its README documents None, False, or an empty string as valid values. The resulting command should contain --enable-local-file-access.
Use it deliberately
Enable local access only when the input is trusted and the referenced files are intentional. Keep assets in a known directory, use explicit paths where practical, and avoid allowing untrusted HTML to choose arbitrary local files. If the installed converter rejects the option, do not assume pdfkit silently applied it; verify the printed command and executable version.
When the option does not help
If the failing line names a remote URL, a redirect, or an authentication-protected resource, local-file access is unrelated. Fix the URL or provide the access information that your deployment permits. If the log names a missing local file, correct the path or package the asset rather than relying on a flag to compensate for a typo.

)Use the path appropriate to your operating system, then run that binary’s version command in your deployment environment. The pdfkit README notes that some distribution packages have reduced functionality, so two machines can accept different switches or render different resources. A reporter associated this error with wkhtmltopdf 0.12.6 and pdfkit 0.6.1; those are that report’s versions, not a general requirement or prevalence figure.
The pdfkit project README now states: “This library has been deprecated to match the wkhtmltopdf project status.” For a new system, weigh that maintenance status against the HTML/CSS features, access controls, deployment constraints, and licensing your application requires. If you keep the stack, pin and document the executable you have actually tested.
Do not disguise a failed load as success
wkhtmltopdf provides load-error handling controls, including --load-error-handling and --load-media-error-handling. These can let conversion continue when a resource fails, but the resulting PDF may be missing styles, images, or other content. Use them only when incomplete output is acceptable and you verify the PDF afterward.

Ignoring errors is not a fix for a required stylesheet or image. Prefer correcting the resource, then retain verbose logging in a reproducible diagnostic path.

- Reproduce with verbosity. Call pdfkit with
verbose=Trueand save the complete stderr output. - Identify the first failed resource. Match its URL or path to the HTML, CSS, image, and font references.
- Test the path independently. Confirm local existence and permissions, or check remote reachability, redirects, authentication, and response behavior from the conversion host.
- Test local access. If the resource is local, add
"enable-local-file-access": Noneand confirm the generated command contains the corresponding flag. - Check the binary. Print the wkhtmltopdf path and version; make sure the binary supports the options you are passing.
- Run the command outside pdfkit. Compare direct wkhtmltopdf output with the wrapper result.
- Validate the PDF. Open representative pages and check CSS, images, fonts, links, and page count. Do not treat exit-code suppression as a successful conversion.

FAQ
Does ProtocolUnknownError prove that my network is offline?
No. It is a resource-loading failure reported by wkhtmltopdf. The failed item can be local, remote, redirected, authenticated, or unsupported; verbose output identifies the useful lead.
Should I add the local-file flag to every conversion?
No. Add it when trusted local assets are required and the installed binary supports it. A remote-resource failure needs a URL or access fix instead.
Is pdfkit still a good choice for a new project?
The project README marks pdfkit deprecated to match wkhtmltopdf’s status. Decide only after checking the HTML/CSS compatibility, maintenance expectations, deployment requirements, resource-access controls, and licensing of the stack you plan to operate.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a missing image trigger this error even when the HTML opens in a browser?
Yes. A browser may have different working-directory, authentication, and file-access context. Compare the converter’s verbose log with the exact resource reference and test it from the conversion environment.
