Pixel Buds Pro 2 Got a Rare Firmware Update in June 2025—but It Was Minor

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google released firmware 3.154 for the Pixel Buds Pro 2 on June 11, 2025, describing it only as a minor bug-fix update. Google did not publish a detailed changelog or announce new features, so the release is best understood as maintenance—not a confirmed upgrade to ANC, sound, battery life, or call quality. This is a historical June 2025 update, not confirmation of the newest firmware available today.

What changed in the Pixel Buds Pro 2 update?

Google’s June 2025 announcement identifies firmware version 3.154 for Pixel Buds Pro 2 and says it includes “minor bug fixes.” It does not name the bugs or describe individual fixes. The release notes also do not announce new features.

There is therefore no official basis to say this update added Gemini features, changed touch controls, improved ANC or spatial audio, extended battery life, or fixed a particular microphone or audio problem. Owners may notice changes, but without a detailed changelog, a specific improvement cannot be attributed to 3.154.

The update applies specifically to Pixel Buds Pro 2. It should not be assumed to cover Pixel Buds Pro, Pixel Buds A-Series, Pixel Buds 2a, or every product called Pixel Buds.

Why was the update called rare?

In June 2025, Droid Life reported that 3.154 was only the second firmware update for Pixel Buds Pro 2 since the earbuds launched in 2024. That timing is the basis for calling it infrequent; it is not a claim by Google, and it says nothing about the update cadence for other Pixel Buds models.

How to check the installed firmware

Connect the earbuds to your phone, then open their settings. On a Pixel phone, the usual route is:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Connected devices.
  3. Tap the settings gear beside your Pixel Buds Pro 2.
  4. Tap More settings, then Firmware update.

Google’s firmware instructions say this screen can show the firmware version for the earbuds and charging case, as well as whether an update is available. Check and record the left earbud, right earbud, and case information shown; do not assume a single displayed component tells you the status of all three.

How automatic updates work

With automatic updates enabled, Pixel Buds Pro 2 connect to a Pixel or Android device running Android 6.0 or newer, and the update downloads while the earbuds are in use. Google estimates the download at about 10 minutes. Installation starts after both earbuds are put in the charging case, provided the earbuds and case have enough charge; Google estimates installation at about 10 minutes.

Keep the earbuds in the case during installation. If the process is interrupted, Google says it can resume later. These are approximate times, not a guarantee that every update will complete on that schedule.

How to start an update manually

On a Pixel phone running Android 10 or newer

  1. Place both earbuds securely in the charging case and connect them to the phone.
  2. Open Settings → System → Software updates → App updates.
  3. Select the paired Pixel Buds, then open More settings → Firmware update.
  4. Tap Manual update available if that option appears, then follow the on-screen instructions.

On another Android phone

Open the Pixel Buds app for the connected earbuds, then go to More settings → Firmware update → Manual update available, if shown. Menu names can vary by Android version and phone manufacturer. Google estimates a manual update may take about 15 minutes.

  • Google Pixel Buds 2a deliver lightweight comfort, crisp audio, Active Noise Cancellation, and a dependable battery, all for less[1]
  • Hear only what you want to hear; Google Tensor A1 powers Active Noise Cancellation with Silent Seal 1.5 to help block external noise; or switch to Transparency mode to hear the world around you while you listen
  • Immerse yourself in clear, crisp audio with the 11 mm dynamic speaker driver, or customize the levels of bass, treble, and more with the 5-band equalizer
  • Pixel Buds 2a are built for lightweight comfort and an impeccable fit; secure them during workouts or commutes with the twist-to-adjust stabilizer, or twist the other direction for relaxed comfort
  • Hear and be heard with Clear Calling; it helps block background noise, so wind, external chatter, or other distractions in your environment won’t interrupt your conversations[2]

Using a computer

Pixel Buds Pro 2 can also be managed through Google’s Pixel Buds web companion app. Pair and connect the earbuds to the computer over Bluetooth, then initiate the update in the web app. Google lists ChromeOS 128 or newer, macOS Sonoma (version 14) or newer, and Windows 11 or newer as supported desktop environments. The web app does not automatically update Pixel Buds Pro or Pro 2; start the process yourself.

If the update does not appear or finish

  • Confirm the earbuds are connected to the phone or computer and that the correct Pixel Buds Pro 2 are selected.
  • Charge the case and both earbuds before starting; installation requires sufficient charge.
  • Update the Pixel Buds app and the phone’s Android software, then reconnect and reopen Firmware update.
  • Leave the earbuds in the charging case during installation. If it is interrupted, try again later; Google says an interrupted update can resume.
  • If the phone does not offer the update, try the web companion app on a supported computer.
  • Allow roughly 15 minutes for a manual update before treating a slow process as stalled.

Windows web update stuck at 0% or 50%

Google documents a Windows-specific recovery for a web update stuck at either percentage. Return to the web companion app home page and disconnect or remove the earbuds there. In Windows, open Settings → Bluetooth & devices, select the Pixel Buds, and remove the device. Pair the earbuds with the computer again, return to the web app, and retry. This is Google’s Windows procedure, not a universal fix for every update problem.

Does firmware 3.154 fix reported owner problems?

Google did not confirm fixes for call quality, one earbud failing to play audio, ANC behavior, pressure-relief sensations, or random dropouts. Replies in the Google Pixel Buds Community announcement include owners describing ongoing complaints, but those are individual reports—not a verified changelog or controlled evidence that the update fails or succeeds for all users.

For a particular malfunction, 3.154 may be worth installing if Google offers it, but the release notes do not promise to resolve that symptom. If a hardware or audio problem continues, the firmware announcement alone cannot establish its cause or remedy.

Should you install it?

If firmware 3.154 is offered for your Pixel Buds Pro 2, installing it is a reasonable way to stay on Google’s supported software path. Keep expectations modest: Google described minor bug fixes, supplied no itemized changelog, and announced no feature upgrade. The cited sources establish the June 2025 release; they do not establish whether 3.154 is still the newest version in September 2026.
