Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

In Acrobat, draw a crop rectangle, open Set Page Boxes to enter precise margins, choose the affected pages, and apply the change. Cropping normally hides content outside the CropBox rather than deleting it, so it is reversible—but it is not redaction and it does not normally reduce file size.
What PDF cropping actually controls
A PDF page can contain several boundaries, called page boxes. The CropBox is the clipping region used for ordinary on-screen display and printing. Anything outside it is hidden from the viewer, even though the underlying objects may remain in the file.
That distinction matters: cropping is a presentation change, not a security operation. If confidential text must be removed, use a proper redaction workflow and verify the resulting file. Cropping also should not be treated as compression or file-size reduction. Adobe states: “Cropping a PDF does not reduce file size because information is merely hidden, not discarded.”
CropBox versus the other page boxes
| Box | Practical meaning | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| CropBox | Visible and normally printed clipping region | You want to remove blank margins from view or focus a page on a region |
| MediaBox | Overall physical sheet boundary | You need to understand the page’s full medium size |
| TrimBox | Intended finished dimensions after trimming | You are preparing a professional print page |
| BleedBox | Production region that can extend beyond the trim edge | Artwork must include bleed for commercial printing |
| ArtBox | Creator-defined meaningful artwork extent, potentially including whitespace | You need the artwork boundary specified by the document creator |
Under PDF 32000-1:2008, CropBox defaults to MediaBox when no CropBox is specified. TrimBox, BleedBox and ArtBox default to CropBox. These boxes ordinarily should not exceed MediaBox; if they do, the effective region is reduced to the intersection with MediaBox.
#1 Best Overall
Coordinates are expressed in default user space. A CropBox is represented by four values: lower-left x, lower-left y, upper-right x, and upper-right y. The coordinate origin is commonly at the lower-left, so changing a top margin changes the upper-right y value rather than a “top” field in a screen-coordinate system.
Crop a PDF in Acrobat desktop
Acrobat’s labels differ slightly between releases. The classic interface uses Tools > Edit PDF > Crop Pages; the newer desktop guide presents Edit > Crop page. The page-box dialog and page-range controls are the important parts in either version.
- Open the PDF. Make a copy first if you may need the original page view.
- Choose the crop tool. Use Tools > Edit PDF > Crop Pages, or Edit > Crop page in the newer desktop interface.
- Draw the intended visible region. Drag a rectangle around the content you want to keep visible. Drag its handles to refine the edges.
- Open page-box settings. Double-click inside the selected rectangle. Acrobat opens Set Page Boxes, where you can enter exact left, right, top and bottom margins or page-box coordinates.
- Choose the box and options. For ordinary viewing and printing, work with the CropBox. If you are preparing production artwork, check whether TrimBox or BleedBox is required; Adobe’s current desktop guide limits advanced TrimBox and BleedBox adjustment to Acrobat Pro.
- Set the page range. Apply the crop to the current page, a specified range, or all pages. Inspect pages first when their sizes or content placement differ.
- Apply the change. Select OK, then save a new file so the uncropped version remains available.
Remove white margins automatically
In Set Page Boxes, choose Remove White Margins when the goal is to crop to the artwork boundary. This is useful for scans or exported pages with a consistent white border, but review pages containing shadows, edge annotations or intentionally blank space: an automatic boundary may cut closer than you expect.
Restore the original displayed area
Open Set Page Boxes again and choose Set To Zero to reset the crop margins. The exact command placement can vary by Acrobat release. Resetting restores the original display boundary only if the underlying page boxes and content were not changed by another operation.

Applying one crop to many pages safely
A single crop is appropriate when pages share the same dimensions and content alignment. It is risky for mixed documents: a portrait cover, landscape chart and scanned letter page may all need different boundaries.
- Review representative pages at the beginning, middle and end of the range.
- Check for rotated pages; rotation changes how a page appears while coordinates remain page geometry.
- Confirm that headers, footers, page numbers and edge notes are outside the intended crop.
- Use a narrower range for pages with a different layout, then apply a second crop to those pages.
- Save to a new filename and reopen it to verify the crop persisted.
Acrobat’s page-range control can target all pages or a defined range. It does not automatically understand that visually similar pages may have different source sizes, so the decision remains yours.
When CropBox is the wrong solution
You need permanent removal
CropBox content is hidden, not destroyed. A recipient with suitable PDF tools may reset the crop and reveal it. Use Acrobat’s redaction tools for sensitive information, apply the redactions, remove hidden information as appropriate, and inspect the output.
You need a smaller file
Cropping alone generally leaves page objects, images and fonts in place. Use PDF optimization, image downsampling or content removal for size reduction, then verify that quality and accessibility remain acceptable.

You are preparing commercial print
Do not substitute CropBox for TrimBox or BleedBox specifications. CropBox controls the reader’s visible region; TrimBox describes the intended finished dimensions, while BleedBox can include artwork that extends beyond the trim. Confirm the printer’s required box settings before exporting.
Programmatic page-box control
For automated workflows, set the page’s CropBox with a PDF library that exposes page coordinates. Supply four numbers in lower-left x/y, upper-right x/y order, and keep the rectangle within the MediaBox. Library APIs differ, so consult the documentation for your chosen SDK. Adobe’s PDFMark documentation and PDF specification define the coordinate order and box relationships; Apple’s Core Graphics documentation exposes a page’s cropBox for readers using that framework.
After writing the file, validate more than the metadata: render pages at the intended size, test text selection near each edge, and check that links, annotations, forms and accessibility tags still behave as expected. A crop can make an interactive element appear missing even when its object remains present.
Troubleshooting PDF cropping
The hidden margin comes back when I print
Check that you changed CropBox rather than only drawing a temporary selection, and review the printer dialog’s scaling option. “Fit,” “Shrink oversized pages” and borderless settings can add apparent margins independently of the PDF.

Content disappeared unexpectedly
Undo, reopen the original copy and inspect the rectangle at high zoom. Include bleed, shadows and edge annotations in the CropBox, then apply the change to a smaller page range first.
Different pages need different crops
Split the document into layout groups and crop each range separately. Do not force one rectangle across mixed page sizes or rotations.
The file is not smaller
This is expected: cropping hides content. Use a dedicated optimizer or remove oversized source images; keep the original because optimization can be irreversible.
I cannot edit TrimBox or BleedBox
Those advanced controls may require Acrobat Pro in current desktop releases. If your edition does not expose them, obtain the required edition or use a PDF production tool that supports those boxes, following the printer’s specification.

The page looks blank after automation
Verify coordinate units, origin and ordering. A reversed rectangle, coordinates outside the MediaBox, or a crop applied to the wrong page can clip all visible content. Render the page after each batch and compare its CropBox with its MediaBox.

If you are preparing documentation that shows a web-based PDF viewer before or after cropping, ScreenshotNeo can capture the page through one request. It accepts the site’s consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; each step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status.
Use the API documentation at https://screenshotneo.com/docs/ for all options. A basic cURL request is:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. It supports full-page capture, CSS-selector element capture, custom CSS and JavaScript, waiting rules, device and viewport settings, PDF output, signed links, asynchronous jobs and bulk capture. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I crop a single page in a PDF?
In Acrobat, choose the crop-page command, draw the area to keep, double-click inside it, set the page range to the current page, and select OK.
Can cropping permanently remove confidential PDF content?
No. CropBox cropping hides content outside the visible region. Use redaction when the information must not be recoverable.
What is the difference between CropBox and TrimBox?
CropBox controls the normal visible or printed clipping region. TrimBox describes the intended finished dimensions for a print page.
