Yes—you can capture a complete screenshot of a localhost, staging, VPN-only, or login-protected page. If the page is already open, use your browser’s full-page DevTools command. For repeatable authenticated captures, use Playwright or Puppeteer from a machine that can access the same private network and session. The key is to capture the full scrollable document, wait for dynamic and lazy-loaded content, and verify the resulting image rather than assuming the browser rendered everything.
What an unpublished site needs for a screenshot
“Unpublished” only describes discoverability. A screenshot process does not require the URL to be indexed or publicly reachable; it requires the rendering browser or automation process to reach it.
- Local development: a URL such as
http://localhost:3000opened on the development machine. - LAN or preview host: a hostname or IP reachable from the capture machine.
- VPN-only staging: a browser or CI runner connected to the required VPN.
- Protected application: a page for which the browser has completed HTTP Basic Auth, SSO, or an application login.
- Hosts-file or private DNS entry: a name that resolves correctly on the machine doing the capture.
Keep credentials out of scripts, command history, filenames, screenshots and CI logs. Use an approved test account or a pre-authenticated browser profile when possible.
Fastest one-off method: Chrome DevTools
Chrome’s DevTools can capture the entire document, including content outside the current viewport. This is the best choice when the page already opens correctly in Chrome and you need one image rather than a repeatable test artifact.

- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
- Open the unpublished URL directly in Chrome on the machine that can reach it.
- Set the intended viewport width by resizing the browser or using DevTools device emulation. Check feature flags, test data, login state and theme first.
- Open DevTools with
F12,Ctrl+Shift+I(Windows/Linux) orCmd+Option+I(macOS). - Open the DevTools command menu with
Ctrl+Shift+PorCmd+Shift+P. - Search for Capture full size screenshot and select it. Do not choose the command that captures only the visible viewport.
- Wait for the download, then inspect the image at its native size.
Before invoking the command, allow fonts, charts, videos’ poster frames and images to render. If the application loads sections only after scrolling, scroll through the page first so those requests and layout changes occur.
Chrome checks after capture
- Look for clipped fixed or sticky headers repeated at unexpected positions.
- Confirm lazy images and below-the-fold cards are present.
- Check cross-origin iframes; their contents can remain blank when blocked by their own security policy.
- Animated elements may be captured between frames. Pause animation in your test environment if visual consistency matters.
- Use a descriptive filename containing the environment and build or commit identifier, but never a token or password.
Firefox’s full-page screenshot
Firefox provides an equivalent manual workflow. With the private page open:
- Open Developer Tools.
- Open the toolbox settings and enable the Take a screenshot of the entire page button.
- Click the screenshot icon while the target page is active.
- Firefox saves the full-page image in the browser’s Downloads directory.
As with Chrome, confirm the intended login, viewport, test data and consent state before capture. A browser screenshot cannot reach a private host from a machine that lacks the relevant VPN, DNS, hosts-file entry or network route.
Repeatable captures with Playwright
Use automation for visual regression, QA evidence, scheduled snapshots or any workflow that must produce the same result repeatedly. Playwright’s fullPage: true option captures the full scrollable page as one image.

Minimal Node.js example
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
const context = await browser.newContext({
viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 },
deviceScaleFactor: 1
});
const page = await context.newPage();
await page.goto('https://staging.example.internal/account', {
waitUntil: 'networkidle',
timeout: 90000
});
await page.screenshot({
path: 'staging-account-full.png',
fullPage: true
});
await browser.close();
Install Playwright with npm install playwright and install the browser binaries with npx playwright install chromium. Replace the URL with one your runner is authorized to access. The exact sign-in bootstrap is application-specific: you may log in through the UI, load an approved storage state, or provide an authenticated context. Do not hard-code production credentials.
Make the result deterministic
- Fix the viewport and device scale factor.
- Wait for a meaningful application selector, such as
[data-testid="dashboard-ready"], rather than relying only on a timer. - Wait for images and fonts that affect layout. A network-idle event does not guarantee that every client-side animation or deferred request is complete.
- Disable animations or freeze the clock in your test environment when pixel comparisons are required.
- Scroll or trigger the application’s lazy-loading behavior before the screenshot.
- Save artifacts outside publicly served directories and attach the build or commit ID to the artifact metadata.
Waiting for a selector
await page.goto('https://staging.example.internal/catalog', {
waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded',
timeout: 90000
});
await page.locator('[data-testid="catalog-ready"]').waitFor({ state: 'visible', timeout: 30000 });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'catalog-full.png', fullPage: true });
Puppeteer for Chrome-focused automation
Puppeteer is another JavaScript library for navigating pages, interacting with elements and taking full-page or element screenshots. A basic capture is:
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({ headless: true });
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setViewport({ width: 1440, height: 900, deviceScaleFactor: 1 });
await page.goto('https://staging.example.internal/account', {
waitUntil: 'networkidle0',
timeout: 90000
});
await page.screenshot({ path: 'account-full.png', fullPage: true });
await browser.close();
})();
Use the same access, authentication, waiting and privacy controls as with Playwright. Puppeteer is a practical choice when your existing test stack is already built around Chrome automation; Playwright is convenient when you need its context and waiting APIs across browser engines.
Which approach should you choose?
| Method | Best for | Access requirement | Repeatability | Output |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chrome DevTools | One-off manual capture | Page must load in Chrome | Low | Full-size image downloaded by Chrome |
| Firefox DevTools | One-off capture in Firefox | Page must load in Firefox | Low | Full-page image saved to Downloads |
| Playwright | CI, QA and authenticated regression runs | Script must establish the required session | High | File or buffer with fullPage: true |
| Puppeteer | Chrome-focused automation | Script must establish the required session | High | Programmatic full-page or element image |
Private-site edge cases
Authentication and session expiry
A screenshot process sees exactly what its browser session sees. A redirect to a login page, an expired cookie or an SSO challenge can therefore produce a valid-looking screenshot of the wrong page. Assert the final URL and a page-specific selector before saving the image.

HTTP Basic Auth
Use the browser’s approved authentication mechanism or an automation context designed for Basic Auth. Never put credentials in a screenshot filename, source repository or publicly readable CI variable.
Lazy content and infinite scroll
fullPage captures the current scrollable document; it does not guarantee that an infinite list has loaded every record. Define the intended stopping condition, trigger loading deliberately and record the data state used for the capture.
Cross-origin frames and blocked resources
An iframe can be blank because its server denies framing, requires a separate session or blocks the runner’s origin. Diagnose the frame independently; changing screenshot dimensions will not bypass that policy.
Very tall pages
Full-page images can become extremely large. Prefer a deterministic page state, capture only the required element when a whole document is unnecessary, and keep image dimensions within the limits of your storage and review tools. The cited browser documentation does not establish one universal maximum page length.

Troubleshooting: symptom, cause and fix
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Only the visible area is saved | Viewport screenshot command or missing full-page option | Choose Chrome’s Capture full size screenshot, Firefox’s entire-page button, or set fullPage: true. |
| Screenshot shows the login screen | No session, expired cookie or SSO redirect | Authenticate in the same context, assert a private-page selector and fail the run if the URL is the login route. |
| Images are missing | Lazy loading, blocked request or capture started too early | Scroll or trigger loading, wait for the image selectors and inspect network errors. |
| Page is cut off or layout shifts | Fonts, charts or client data had not finished rendering | Wait for an application-ready selector and relevant assets; use a fixed viewport. |
| Private hostname cannot be opened | Runner lacks VPN, DNS, hosts-file entry or route | Run locally or on an authorized CI runner with the same network access. |
| Blank iframe | Cross-origin framing or separate authentication policy | Check the iframe response and its frame policy; authenticate or allow framing only where authorized. |
| Automation times out | Slow staging response, blocked resource or incorrect readiness condition | Use a realistic timeout, inspect logs, wait for a stable selector and fix the underlying page or route. |
| Different runs produce different pixels | Animation, time-dependent data, fonts or random content | Freeze animations and data, preload fonts, set locale/timezone and use stable test fixtures. |
Performance, reliability and cost considerations
Manual DevTools captures have almost no setup cost but are difficult to reproduce. Browser automation adds startup and rendering time, yet gives you a controlled viewport, explicit waits and artifacts suitable for CI. Full-page captures also consume more memory and storage than viewport images, especially on long documents or high device-scale factors.
For reliable runs, keep the capture machine near the staging network, reuse browser processes when your test runner supports it, avoid unnecessary third-party requests in test environments and retain the HTML, console and network logs when a screenshot fails. No general success-rate, maximum-height or time-saving figure is established for private-site captures, so treat those as environment-specific measurements.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Send one request for a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF instead of maintaining browser code:
cURL
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Replace the example URL with an address the service can reach; a localhost or VPN-only hostname generally requires a network-accessible deployment or an authorized runner. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options.

FAQ
Does an unpublished page need to be public?
No. It needs to be reachable by the browser or authorized runner performing the capture. Indexing and public discoverability are irrelevant.
Can I capture a page behind a login?
Yes, if the browser or automation context has a valid session and your workflow is authorized. Authentication setup is site-specific.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why is my full-page image still incomplete?
Full-page mode captures the scrollable document that exists at capture time. Trigger lazy loading and wait for the application’s content-ready condition before saving.
