How to Remove Redundant Chromium Arguments in PuppeteerSharp Containers

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use LaunchOptions.IgnoredDefaultArgs to remove one or more switches that PuppeteerSharp generated. Keep IgnoreDefaultArgs set to its default false, inspect Puppeteer.GetDefaultArgs(options), and add only the exact unwanted strings to the ignore list. Use IgnoreDefaultArgs = true only when you intentionally maintain the complete Chromium command line yourself.

How PuppeteerSharp creates Chromium arguments

PuppeteerSharp combines its platform-specific defaults with your LaunchOptions. Puppeteer.GetDefaultArgs(options) returns the generated array before launch, while Puppeteer.LaunchAsync(options) starts the browser with those options. Your Args collection supplies additional switches; it is not documented as a filter or deduplication mechanism for generated defaults.

A duplicate-looking flag can therefore come from several layers: PuppeteerSharp defaults, your Args array, a Docker entrypoint, a wrapper script, or a hosting platform. Do not call a switch redundant until you have identified which layer supplied each copy and confirmed the exact spelling, value, and ordering that Chromium receives.

Remove selected defaults with IgnoredDefaultArgs

For the usual container fix, retain PuppeteerSharp’s defaults and filter only the known conflicts. The strings in IgnoredDefaultArgs must match generated arguments exactly. If the generated value is --remote-debugging-port=0, ignoring only --remote-debugging-port will not match that entry.

using PuppeteerSharp;

var options = new LaunchOptions
{
    Headless = true,
    IgnoredDefaultArgs = new[]
    {
        "--disable-extensions",
        "--some-redundant-flag"
    },
    Args = new[]
    {
        "--no-sandbox",
        "--disable-dev-shm-usage"
    }
};

await using var browser = await Puppeteer.LaunchAsync(options);
await using var page = await browser.NewPageAsync();
await page.GoToAsync("https://example.com");

IgnoredDefaultArgs is the selective mechanism: when global default suppression is not enabled, PuppeteerSharp uses this list to filter the result of GetDefaultArgs(LaunchOptions). Assigning the property also enables the corresponding ignore behavior in the options object. The rest of the generated switches remain available, which reduces the chance of breaking startup or browser behavior.

When this method is appropriate

  • A base image already adds a switch that PuppeteerSharp also generates.
  • A security or policy wrapper rejects one specific generated argument.
  • You need to remove a feature flag but still want PuppeteerSharp’s normal headless, process, and debugging defaults.

Inspect the generated list before changing options

  1. Build production-equivalent options. Use the same executable path, headless setting, user identity, arguments, and environment variables that the container uses in deployment.
  2. Call Puppeteer.GetDefaultArgs(options). Log each returned string before launching. This shows what PuppeteerSharp contributes, not merely what you intended to configure.
  3. Collect the other command-line layers. Check the Dockerfile ENTRYPOINT, startup shell script, orchestration manifest, and any hosting service that appends Chromium flags.
  4. Compare exact strings. Distinguish --flag from --flag=value, and note whether a later occurrence overrides an earlier one or causes the executable to reject duplicates.
  5. Add only the generated target to IgnoredDefaultArgs. Keep intentional container settings such as sandbox and shared-memory choices in Args.
  6. Verify the final process command line. Launch in the container, inspect the running process, and confirm that the browser still starts and can create a page.

Inspection matters because a flag that looks duplicated in your C# code may occur only once in PuppeteerSharp’s generated list, or may be duplicated by the image’s entrypoint instead. Removing a default cannot correct a conflict introduced entirely outside PuppeteerSharp.

Selective filtering versus complete replacement

Method What it does Use it when Main risk
IgnoredDefaultArgs = [...] Removes selected generated switches while retaining the remaining defaults. One or a few known arguments conflict with your image or policy. The target must match the generated argument exactly.
IgnoreDefaultArgs = true Suppresses the complete generated default set. You own, test, and document the entire Chromium command line. Omitting a required default can prevent startup or change browser behavior.

PuppeteerSharp labels global suppression as dangerous and leaves it disabled by default. Treat it as an advanced replacement strategy, not a way to deduplicate two copies of one switch.

Build a complete command line with IgnoreDefaultArgs = true

Use global suppression only when a controlled runtime requires a hand-built command line. You must provide every option your executable, container, and automation flow need.

using PuppeteerSharp;

var options = new LaunchOptions
{
    Headless = true,
    IgnoreDefaultArgs = true,
    Args = new[]
    {
        "--headless=new",
        "--no-sandbox",
        "--disable-dev-shm-usage",
        "--remote-debugging-port=0"
    }
};

await using var browser = await Puppeteer.LaunchAsync(options);
await using var page = await browser.NewPageAsync();
await page.GoToAsync("https://example.com");
Console.WriteLine(await page.TitleAsync());

This example is not a recommendation to copy every switch into production. The required set depends on your Chromium build, executable path, sandbox configuration, and workload. Start with the smallest tested set, then add a switch only when a demonstrated runtime requirement calls for it.

Why adding a second flag does not remove the first

Args is additive. Supplying a replacement value there does not document a filter for an already generated default. Depending on Chromium’s parsing rules, the last value may win, both may be accepted, or the executable may fail. If your goal is removal, use IgnoredDefaultArgs; if your goal is addition, use Args.

For a value-bearing option, inspect the exact generated entry and ignore that complete entry. Then add your intentional replacement in Args only if the browser or container needs one. This makes the resulting command line explicit and keeps future PuppeteerSharp default changes visible during diagnostics.

Docker failures that argument filtering cannot fix

Crashpad errors

An error such as chrome_crashpad_handler: --database is required can occur when a system Chromium package and its crashpad configuration are incompatible with the container. Removing an unrelated PuppeteerSharp default will not repair the executable packaging. Check the Chromium build, crashpad directory, writable paths, and executable path as a separate branch.

Sandbox and user identity

Containers often run as a user that cannot use Chromium’s sandbox, leading teams to add --no-sandbox. That switch weakens an isolation boundary and is not a universal fix. Prefer a correctly configured sandbox and non-root user when your deployment permits it; if policy requires --no-sandbox, document the container isolation and threat model rather than hiding the trade-off in a generic argument list.

Shared-memory exhaustion

Chromium uses shared memory for renderer work. A small container-mounted /dev/shm can cause tab crashes even when the arguments are correct. Increase the shared-memory allocation where possible. --disable-dev-shm-usage can move that pressure to disk-backed temporary storage, but it changes performance and I/O characteristics; test it with your page workload.

Executable and architecture mismatches

Confirm that the path in ExecutablePath points to a browser built for the container’s CPU architecture and that all shared libraries are installed. An immediate process exit, missing-library message, or illegal-instruction error is an image problem, not evidence that a generated flag is redundant.

A repeatable production workflow

  1. Capture and store the generated default array for the deployed PuppeteerSharp version.
  2. Record the image digest, executable path, user, environment, and entrypoint command alongside that array.
  3. Remove one candidate with IgnoredDefaultArgs and run a startup, navigation, JavaScript, download, and PDF smoke test appropriate to your service.
  4. Inspect browser stderr and the final process command line after every change.
  5. Keep the smallest ignore list in source control and add a comment explaining the external layer that required each removal.
  6. Re-run the inspection when upgrading PuppeteerSharp, Chromium, the base image, or the orchestrator, because generated defaults can change.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is simply to obtain a clean website image or PDF rather than operate Chromium in your own container, ScreenshotNeo provides a hosted GET endpoint and an MCP server. It accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. AI clients such as Claude and Cursor can use its MCP tools take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.

Troubleshooting checklist

Symptom Likely cause Action
The supposedly removed switch is still present. The ignore string does not exactly match the generated entry, or another layer adds it later. Log GetDefaultArgs(options), compare spelling and values, then inspect the Docker entrypoint and final process command.
Chromium exits immediately after global suppression. A required generated default was omitted. Return to selective filtering, or reconstruct the command line from a passing baseline one switch at a time.
Duplicate values remain after adding Args. Args is additive, not a filter. Move the unwanted generated string to IgnoredDefaultArgs and keep only the intentional value in Args.
Pages crash under load. Small /dev/shm, excessive concurrency, or a browser resource limit. Measure container memory and shared memory, adjust the mount or test --disable-dev-shm-usage, and reduce concurrency before changing defaults.
chrome_crashpad_handler reports a missing database. System Chromium or crashpad packaging is misconfigured. Validate the executable package, writable crashpad path, user permissions, and image libraries independently of PuppeteerSharp arguments.
Adding --no-sandbox fixes startup but raises security concerns. The container user cannot use the sandbox. Prefer a supported sandbox configuration and non-root user; otherwise document the reduced isolation and restrict the container’s permissions.

FAQ

Does PuppeteerSharp remove duplicate arguments automatically?

Do not rely on automatic deduplication. Inspect the generated array and the command-line layers that surround it, then explicitly filter the exact default you do not want.

Can I remove a default only for one launch?

Yes. Put the ignore list on that launch’s LaunchOptions instance. Other launches can use their own options and retain the normal defaults.

Will ignoring a switch make Chromium faster?

There is no general performance guarantee. Removing an argument changes browser behavior only when that switch affects a feature, resource path, or security setting; measure your workload rather than assuming a speedup.
