For an entire, scrollable webpage on Ubuntu, use Firefox’s built-in screenshot tool: open the page, press Ctrl+Shift+S (or right-click an empty part of the page and choose Take Screenshot), select Save full page, then choose Download or Copy. This captures content below the viewport as one image. Ubuntu’s normal screenshot overlay captures a screen, window, or selected visible area; it does not provide the same webpage full-page function.
Use Firefox to capture a whole webpage
Firefox is the simplest documented way to make a scrolling screenshot in Ubuntu. It renders the page, including content below the current viewport, and combines it into one image. The feature is intended for webpages, not arbitrary tall application windows or every nested scroll panel.
- Open the target webpage in Firefox and wait for the content you need to appear.
- Right-click an empty area of the page and select Take Screenshot. You can also press Ctrl+Shift+S.
- In the upper-right controls, choose Save full page. Choose Save visible when you only need the current viewport.
- Click Download to save a PNG in Firefox’s configured download folder, or click Copy to place the image on the clipboard.
Menu labels can vary slightly with Firefox releases. Mozilla’s current instructions are in Take screenshots in Firefox; check that page if your installed version shows different wording.
What “full page” includes
Full-page mode captures the webpage’s rendered document, not just the pixels currently visible on your monitor. Long articles, documentation pages and pages with a normal vertical scrollbar are the typical use cases. A page that loads content only after a user action, uses an internal scroll container, or changes while Firefox is capturing may not produce the result you expect.

Save versus copy
- Download: creates an image file in Firefox’s download location. Use Firefox’s Settings → General → Files and Applications section to change that folder or ask where each file should be saved.
- Copy: places the capture on the clipboard so you can paste it into an editor, chat, document or image tool. Clipboard behavior depends on the receiving application and your desktop session.
Firefox Developer Tools method
Developers can expose a dedicated full-page button or run a command from the Web Console. This is useful when you already work in Developer Tools or need options such as a delay, device-pixel ratio, clipboard output or a specified filename.
Enable the full-page screenshot button
- Open Developer Tools with F12 or the browser menu.
- Open Developer Tools Settings.
- Under Available Toolbox Buttons, enable Take a screenshot of the entire page.
- Close Settings, then click the new camera-style button in the toolbox toolbar.
Firefox’s developer documentation describes this workflow and the available controls in Taking screenshots.
Use the Web Console command
Open the Web Console, type the following command, and press Enter:

:screenshot --fullpage
The command supports optional controls documented by Mozilla, including a delay, device-pixel ratio, clipboard output and filename. A delay can help when a page needs a moment to finish layout or lazy loading, but it cannot guarantee that an interactive site will expose every state without user actions.
Ubuntu’s built-in screenshot overlay: what it can and cannot do
Press Print (or open the system menu and choose the screenshot control) to use Ubuntu Desktop’s capture overlay. It offers a selection, screen or window capture. Ubuntu says captures are saved by default under Pictures/Screenshots and placed on the clipboard.
This route captures what is visible on the desktop. Selecting a Firefox window captures the visible browser area, not the complete webpage below the fold. The Jammy gnome-screenshot manual documents full-screen, active-window and user-defined-area modes, along with clipboard, delay and output-file options, but not a browser-style scrolling capture. See Ubuntu’s screenshots and screencasts help and the gnome-screenshot manual.

When a full-page capture looks incomplete
Lazy-loaded images are missing
Some sites request images only as you approach them. Scroll through the page once, wait for images to appear, then run Firefox’s capture again. If the page continually changes, capture after it settles. The Firefox documentation does not promise identical results for every interactive page.
A nested panel has its own scrollbar
Full-page mode targets the document. A chat transcript, code editor or dashboard panel that scrolls inside a fixed-height element may remain limited to its visible height. If you need that panel, use the application’s export function when available, or capture successive visible sections and combine them manually.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSticky headers or repeated elements
Fixed navigation can appear repeatedly or cover content in a long image. Try the page’s print view, reader view or a custom stylesheet before capturing. You can also use a visible-area capture for a specific section and annotate it separately.

The page requires a sign-in or blocks automation
Capture only pages you are authorized to view. A login redirect, consent wall, bot check or failed resource load can result in a blank or partial image. Resolve the page state in Firefox first; the screenshot tool cannot bypass an access control.

- “Take Screenshot” is missing: right-click directly on page content, not an image or browser toolbar; then try Ctrl+Shift+S. Update Firefox if the command is unavailable.
- Only the visible area is saved: select Save full page, not Save visible. The Ubuntu Print overlay will not substitute for Firefox full-page mode.
- The download cannot be found: open Firefox’s downloads list and check Settings → General → Files and Applications for the configured folder.
- The image is blank: reload the page, wait for it to finish, verify that the content is visible without a blocked login or bot challenge, and retry.
- Content changes during capture: stop auto-refreshing widgets, dismiss transient overlays, allow animations to settle, or use the Developer Tools command with a delay.
- The result is too large: a very long page can create a large image that is awkward to open or share. Use the page’s print-to-PDF option, capture sections, or resize a copy for distribution.
- Clipboard paste fails: use Download instead, then insert the file from your image editor or file manager.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. It accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status.
Use the API documentation at screenshotneo.com/docs/ for the complete option list, including full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, device presets, custom viewport and retina scale, PDF settings, custom CSS and JavaScript, click and wait actions, request blocking, headers, cookies, user agent, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, configurable cache TTL, signed links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture and usage information. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

Choosing the right Ubuntu workflow
- Choose Firefox Save full page for a one-off webpage image with no installation.
- Choose Developer Tools when you need repeatable commands or capture controls.
- Choose the Ubuntu overlay or gnome-screenshot for desktop windows and visible regions.
- Choose an API when captures belong in a build, monitoring job, documentation pipeline or AI-agent workflow.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I capture a full scrolling terminal window with Firefox’s tool?
No. Firefox’s documented full-page feature targets webpages. Use the terminal’s own scrollback export, a series of visible captures, or an application-specific export for a tall native window.
Does Firefox save a full-page screenshot as a PDF?
The built-in screenshot commands described here save an image. Use the webpage’s print dialog or a PDF-capable capture service when you need a PDF.
Quick Recap
Will a full-page screenshot include content behind a cookie banner?
Only after the banner is handled or removed in the page state you capture. Dismiss the banner in Firefox first, or use a service that performs consent cleanup before rendering.
