To convert HTML to JPG, render the document in a browser or HTML-to-image engine, then capture the rendered page as a JPEG. HTML is markup, not a bitmap, so simply renaming .html to .jpg cannot work. For a one-off conversion, open the file in a browser and use a screenshot workflow. For repeatable output, use Playwright, Puppeteer, Chrome Headless, or wkhtmltoimage. Decide first whether you need the visible viewport or the entire scrollable page, and set the output format explicitly to JPEG.
What “HTML to JPG” actually means
An HTML file can contain structure, CSS, images, fonts, and JavaScript. A JPG is a raster image containing the pixels produced after that content is rendered. Conversion therefore has two stages:
- Load the HTML and its resources in a rendering engine.
- Capture the resulting viewport or full page and encode it as JPEG.
This distinction matters for local files. Relative image and stylesheet paths must resolve correctly, scripts may need time to run, and a page that extends below the viewport may require a full-page capture. If you need selectable text or a document that reflows, keep HTML or create a PDF instead; JPG is best for a fixed visual snapshot.

Before you convert a local HTML file
Put dependent assets in predictable locations
Use relative paths that are valid from the HTML file’s directory, or absolute file:// URLs where your renderer permits them. Confirm that images, web fonts, CSS, and JavaScript files exist and are readable. A missing asset can produce a technically valid JPG that looks incomplete.

Choose dimensions and scope
For a viewport image, set a deliberate width and height, such as 1440×900. For a full-page image, use the renderer’s full-page option. Long pages can create extremely tall JPEGs; if the file will be posted online or sent by email, consider resizing after capture.
Make dynamic content deterministic
Wait for the page’s application state, a specific selector, or network activity to settle. A fixed delay is less reliable than waiting for a meaningful element, but it can help with animations or third-party widgets. Disable animations in your test CSS when exact repeatability matters.
Playwright: the most complete browser-based workflow
Playwright’s screenshot interface supports PNG, JPEG, and WebP, a custom filename, and full-page capture. The following Node.js script opens a local file, waits for it to finish loading, and writes a JPG.

Check the installed Playwright CLI and API documentation because command-line flags and defaults can change between versions. Set fullPage: false for only the current viewport. The quality value applies to JPEG encoding; higher quality usually creates a larger file.

When local resources do not load
Keep the HTML and asset folders together and use paths such as images/logo.png. If the page deliberately fetches network resources, make sure the runtime has network access. If JavaScript renders the main content after load, wait for a selector instead of relying only on networkidle:

Puppeteer’s Page API follows the same basic pattern: launch a browser, create a page, navigate, save a screenshot, and close the browser. Adapt the navigation URL to your local file and use a JPG filename and supported screenshot options in your installed version.

Chrome Headless from the command line
Chrome’s documented headless mode can capture a page with --screenshot, and --window-size controls the viewport dimensions. A typical local-file command is:

If your required deliverable is JPG, verify that your Chrome version exposes a JPEG output option; otherwise capture PNG and convert it with an image utility that you already trust. Chrome also documents a timeout flag, which is useful when a page needs extra time to execute scripts or fetch resources. Do not assume a short timeout means the page is ready.
wkhtmltoimage for a direct HTML-to-image command
The Ubuntu Noble manpage describes wkhtmltoimage [OPTIONS]... <input file> <output file> and package version 0.12.6-2build2. It provides controls for JPEG quality, JavaScript, JavaScript delay, images, screen width, and local-file access.

page.html page.jpgUse the installed package’s own --help output or manpage when options differ. A local document that references nearby files may require the tool’s local-file access setting. If scripts are not needed, disabling JavaScript can make output more predictable; if scripts create the content, leave it enabled and provide an adequate delay.
Viewport versus full-page JPG
Viewport capture
A viewport capture records only what fits inside the configured browser window. It is appropriate for a hero section, dashboard panel, or documentation example where a fixed frame is required. Set the viewport explicitly so repeated runs do not depend on the machine’s display.

Full-page capture
Full-page mode expands the capture to the document’s scrollable height. Check lazy-loaded images: some pages load them only after scrolling, so wait for those elements or trigger scrolling before the screenshot. Extremely long pages can exceed practical image dimensions or memory limits; splitting the page into sections or creating a PDF may be more usable.
Images, fonts, and JavaScript: common edge cases
- Relative paths: A file opened from the wrong working directory may show broken images. Resolve the HTML file to an absolute file URL.
- Web fonts: Capture only after the font has loaded, otherwise text may appear in a fallback typeface. A page-specific “ready” selector is safer than a fixed sleep.
- Lazy images: Full-page height does not guarantee every image was fetched. Scroll, wait for image completion, or configure the page to eager-load assets.
- Cross-origin requests: Browser security and server policy can block resources even though the HTML itself opens. Fix the resource policy or serve the page from a local development server.
- Animations: A screenshot can catch an intermediate frame. Add CSS that disables transitions or pause animation before capture.
- Transparent backgrounds: JPEG has no alpha channel. Choose a solid page background before encoding, or capture PNG when transparency is required.
- Color and compression: JPEG is lossy. Use a quality setting appropriate to the text and graphics; sharp UI text may show artifacts at very low quality.
Troubleshooting failed or incorrect conversions
The output is blank or mostly white
Check that the input URL is correct, the browser reached the intended document, and JavaScript had time to render. Wait for a known selector, inspect console errors, and confirm that the page is not hidden behind an authentication step.
Images or CSS are missing
Inspect every relative path from the HTML file’s location. Use an absolute file:// URL, keep assets in the expected directory, or serve the folder through a local HTTP server. For command-line tools, review local-file access restrictions.
The JPG is cropped
You captured the viewport rather than the full page, or the page’s height was measured before content expanded. Use full-page capture and wait until the final layout is present. For a deliberately fixed image, increase the viewport dimensions instead.

Fonts or layout differ from the browser preview
Make the viewport, device scale factor, browser version, and font availability explicit. Wait for web fonts and disable responsive breakpoints that depend on an unexpected width.
Chrome creates PNG instead of JPG
That is the documented behavior of Chrome’s basic screenshot example. Verify a JPEG-capable option for your installed release or convert the PNG in a separate, controlled step. Do not rely only on changing the filename extension.

wkhtmltoimage does not show dynamic content
JavaScript may be disabled, blocked, or unfinished when capture starts. Enable it, increase the JavaScript delay, and confirm that the page’s scripts support the renderer. Modern browser automation can be a better fit for applications that depend on current browser APIs.

Browser startup is often the expensive part of a batch job. Reuse one browser process and create a new page per capture rather than launching a browser for every file. Limit concurrency to what the machine’s CPU and memory can sustain. For deterministic output, pin the browser version, viewport, device scale factor, fonts, and waiting condition.

JPEG quality, viewport width, device scale factor, and full-page height all affect file size. Retina or high device scale factors produce sharper output but multiply pixel count. If a consumer system has a maximum upload size, resize after capture and inspect the result for text artifacts. Keep the original HTML and capture settings alongside generated images so a later conversion can be reproduced.

Should I use JPG or PNG for HTML screenshots?
Use JPG for smaller photographic or general-purpose images when a solid background is acceptable. PNG is usually preferable for transparency, line art, and text where lossless edges matter.
Why does renaming an HTML file to .jpg fail?
The extension does not perform rendering or encoding. A renderer must first produce pixels, and an image encoder must write those pixels as JPEG.
How do I convert a page that requires a login?
Use an authenticated browser context or a capture service that accepts the required headers and cookies. Keep credentials out of source files and logs.
