Chrome does not export a page directly to JPG from its built-in Print command. To make a JPG of a rendered HTML page, use a Chrome screenshot extension and choose its JPEG/JPG export. Pick a full-page capture for one tall image, or a visible-area or selection capture for only part of the page. If you need searchable text or print layout instead, use Chrome’s native Save as PDF option.
Choose the right output before you capture
A JPG is a raster image: page text and graphics become pixels rather than selectable document text. The result reflects the page as Chrome rendered it, including its current viewport, loaded images and visible interface. PDF is usually a better fit for printing or retaining selectable text, while MHTML is an offline web archive—not an image.
| Need | Best fit | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| One image of a long page | Full-page screenshot extension | A tall JPG/JPEG of the rendered page; very long pages may be large or split depending on the extension. |
| Only the current screen | Visible-area capture | A JPG of the current viewport, not content below the fold. |
| A particular part of the page | Selection capture | An image limited to the selected region, if the extension offers this mode. |
| Printing or searchable text | Chrome Print → Save as PDF | A PDF document; page layout may follow print styling rather than the screen layout. |
| Offline web-page preservation | MHTML via an extension using Chrome’s pageCapture API | A web archive, not a JPG. |
Save a full webpage as one JPG in Chrome
- Install a full-page screenshot extension. Options whose Chrome Web Store listings describe relevant export features include GoFullPage, PageSaver, Page to Image and FireShot. Check the current listing for availability, permissions and export formats before installing; extension features can change.
- Open the HTML page in Chrome. This can be a public webpage or an HTML file opened in the browser. Wait for the page’s content and images to finish loading as far as practical.
- Start the extension’s full-page capture. Use its full-page or entire-page command, rather than visible-area mode. Some tools scroll through the page and stitch captured sections together; let that process finish without switching away or closing the tab.
- Choose JPG or JPEG in the export control. The label and location vary by extension. If it offers an editor, export or download the finished image as JPG/JPEG.
- Inspect the downloaded image. Check the beginning and end of the page, text near section boundaries, fixed headers, and images that load only as you scroll. If the result is cut off or split, try the extension’s settings or capture a shorter section.
The listings describe different capabilities: GoFullPage says it downloads lossless PNG images, compressed JPG files and PDFs; PageSaver lists PNG, JPG, WebP and PDF exports; Page to Image lists PNG or JPEG; and FireShot lists saving a full-page capture as JPEG. These are vendor descriptions, not independent performance tests. See the GoFullPage Chrome Web Store listing, PageSaver Chrome Web Store listing, Page to Image Chrome Web Store listing and FireShot Chrome Web Store listing for current details.
Capture only the visible screen or a selection
If you do not need the whole document, a visible-area capture avoids producing a very tall image. A selection mode is useful for a chart, paragraph or other specific region. Choose the relevant capture mode in the extension, then export as JPG/JPEG. FireShot’s listing explicitly describes capturing the entire page, the visible part or a selection, with PDF, PNG or JPEG output; confirm the installed version still offers the mode you need.

Before saving, consider what is in the selected area. A screenshot can include account names, notifications, private page content or browser-visible information. Crop or redact sensitive details using an editor if necessary, and avoid uploading confidential pages to a service unless its handling is suitable for that content.
Use Chrome’s built-in Save as PDF when an image is not required
- Open the page or HTML file in Chrome.
- Open Chrome’s Print command.
- In the destination/printer control, choose Save as PDF.
- Review the print preview and save the PDF.
Google Chrome Help documents printing a page, image or file and saving it as PDF. This is not a direct JPG export. Print preview can use print-specific layout rules, so a PDF may differ from a screenshot of the screen. If you still need a JPG, convert the PDF in an image editor or converter afterward; that extra rasterization step can affect image resolution and does not turn Chrome Print into a native JPG workflow. See Google Chrome Help: Print from Chrome.
When MHTML is useful—and when it is not
Chrome’s chrome.pageCapture extension API saves a tab as MHTML and requires the pageCapture permission in the extension manifest. MHTML is intended for preserving a webpage as an archive, not delivering a JPG image. It is therefore the wrong choice when the recipient needs a standard image file. See Chrome for Developers: pageCapture API.

For a programmatic screenshot, ScreenshotNeo accepts one GET request with a URL and returns an image or PDF. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its cleanup removes supported cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture, with each step configurable. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed; response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. AI agents can use its MCP tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf. Plans include 1,000 shots per month free with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. For supported output and capture parameters, see the ScreenshotNeo documentation.
The example saves a JPG response for Stripe. Replace the target URL with the page you are authorized to capture; set the output format to JPEG using the documented request parameter if needed. Keep your API key private.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
The provided command writes a WebP-named file, so for an actual JPG use the documented format parameter and a .jpg output filename. ScreenshotNeo supports PNG, JPEG or WebP image responses, plus PDF. See the API docs for the exact format parameter and other options.
ScreenshotNeo is useful when you need repeatable captures rather than manually opening an extension. Start with the free plan: 1,000 screenshots a month with no card.

Common problems and fixes
The extension saved PNG or PDF instead of JPG
Some capture tools default to a different format or put format selection in an editor/export panel. Reopen the export controls and choose JPG/JPEG explicitly. If the current extension version does not offer JPEG, use a tool whose current listing does, or convert the saved image with an image editor.
The screenshot contains only the visible screen
You likely selected viewport or visible-area capture. Start a new capture using the extension’s full-page or entire-page mode. If it still stops early, check whether the page is inside an embedded frame or whether the extension documents limits for long pages.
Images or content are missing lower down
Pages may load images only when they approach the viewport. Scroll through the page once before capturing, wait for delayed content, then try again. A scrolling capture should be allowed to complete; interactive or continuously updating content may not settle into a single consistent image.

The top or bottom is cut off, duplicated or oddly stitched
Full-page capture may stitch several viewport captures. Fixed-position headers, animations and changing page content can complicate the seams. Try disabling animation or sticky elements if the extension provides controls, capture a shorter range, or use a PDF if print layout is acceptable.
The JPG looks blurry or the file is too large
JPG quality and pixel dimensions depend on the extension’s export settings and the page length. If there is a quality control, increase it for legibility or lower it to reduce file size. For text-heavy pages, PNG may preserve sharp edges better, while JPG often makes a smaller compressed file; neither choice makes text selectable.

Print preview changes the design
Print output may use the page’s print stylesheet, omit interactive elements or repaginate content. That is expected for a document-oriented PDF workflow. Use screenshot capture when matching the rendered browser appearance matters more than print layout.

A browser extension may request access to page content so it can capture tabs. Review the permission prompt and the developer’s current listing before granting access, especially on pages containing private or work data. Capture extensions can work locally in the browser, but do not assume every editing or sharing feature is local; check the product’s current privacy disclosures.

- Confirm that the extension is offered in the Chrome Web Store and that its stated export formats match your need.
- Review requested permissions and avoid capturing sensitive pages with tools whose handling you have not checked.
- For long pages, inspect image boundaries and lazy-loaded content rather than assuming a capture completed correctly.
- Keep a copy of the original HTML or URL when fidelity matters; a JPG cannot preserve links, text selection or page behavior.
Frequently asked questions
Can Chrome save an HTML file directly as JPG without an extension?
Chrome’s built-in Print workflow offers Save as PDF, not direct JPG export. Use a screenshot extension for a JPG, or save a PDF and convert it separately.
Is a JPG the same as JPEG?
In ordinary image-export menus, JPG and JPEG refer to the same image format; the filename extension may be .jpg or .jpeg.
Can I save an entire webpage as one image?
Yes. Use a full-page capture mode and inspect the output, particularly on very long or dynamic pages. Extension limits and behavior vary.
