The reliable answer is in Snagit’s Library setting. Snagit does not use one universal screenshot folder: the location depends on your operating system, Snagit generation, Library configuration, and whether you saved the image manually. On Windows, open Snagit Editor > Edit > Editor Preferences > Library to see the active folder. On macOS, Snagit 2022 and newer normally use ~/Pictures/Snagit, while older releases may use an Autosaved Captures folder under Pictures or Documents.
Find the active Snagit folder first
The Library is a view of files in a configured folder, not a separate storage database. If a capture appears in Snagit, the file should exist in the folder currently assigned to the Library. A folder changed by you, an administrator, or a cloud-storage setup can therefore make the familiar default path incorrect.

Snagit 2024 - Screen Capture & Image Editor [PC/Mac Online Code] | $49.99 | Buy on Amazon |
Windows
- Open Snagit Editor.
- Choose Edit > Editor Preferences.
- Open the Library tab.
- Read the displayed Library location. Select Choose location… if you need to move it or verify the full path.
- Open that path in File Explorer and sort by date or use the file-type filter to locate the capture.
If the Library folder is inside OneDrive, Box, Dropbox, or another synced location, confirm that the folder is available offline. A cloud provider can show a placeholder while the actual file remains unavailable, and synchronization throttling can delay what Snagit displays.
macOS
For Snagit 2022 and newer, TechSmith documents ~/Pictures/Snagit as the default Autosaved Captures folder. In Snagit 2021 and earlier, the default may be ~/Pictures/Snagit/Autosaved Captures or ~/Documents/Snagit/Autosaved Captures.

- Open Snagit’s settings or preferences.
- Locate the Library or autosave location shown there.
- Use Finder’s Go > Go to Folder… and paste the displayed path, or press Command-Shift-G.
- Search by the capture date, filename, or extension if the folder contains many files.
The setting shown in your installed version takes precedence over any default path listed in a guide.
Library captures versus exported images
Two files that look like “Snagit screenshots” can be in completely different folders.
Captures retained automatically in the Library
When automatic saving is enabled, new image captures are retained in the configured Library location. Snagit then displays those files in the Library. Changing the Library folder changes where future captures are retained and can change what appears in the Editor.
Images saved or exported manually
A capture saved with File > Save As, an export command, or a capture preset can go to a destination you selected. Check your operating system’s recent files list, the destination used in the save dialog, and common folders such as Downloads, Desktop, Pictures, or a project directory. The exported copy may not be in the Library at all.
Automatic saving disabled
TechSmith documents that disabling automatic saving of new image captures lets you choose the file type and destination for each capture. In that workflow, the Library is not a dependable record of every screenshot: the file exists wherever you confirmed in the save dialog.
Which path applies to your Snagit version?
| Platform and generation | What to check | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Windows, Snagit 2022 or newer | Snagit Editor > Edit > Editor Preferences > Library | The configured Library path is authoritative; it may differ from the default or be cloud-backed. |
| Windows, Snagit 2021 or earlier | Library setting, plus the legacy Datastore when recovering unsaved captures | The Datastore was discontinued beginning with Snagit 2022. |
| macOS, Snagit 2022 or newer | Settings and normally ~/Pictures/Snagit |
The user or an administrator may have changed the location. |
| macOS, Snagit 2021 or earlier | Settings and either Autosaved Captures path | Common documented defaults are under Pictures or Documents. |
| Any platform, manual save/export | The destination selected in the save or export dialog | This copy can be outside the Library. |
Recovering captures from older Windows versions
Snagit 2021 and earlier used a Datastore for unsaved captures. The documented default Windows path was C:UsersusernameAppDataLocalTechSmithSnagitDataStore. This is not the current storage path for Snagit 2022 or later.
Do not move or overwrite the folder casually
Moving a legacy Datastore outside Snagit can prevent its captures from appearing automatically in the Library. TechSmith’s restoration process replaces captures in the existing Library; it does not merge two Datastores. Before restoring, copy the existing Library and Datastore folders to a separate backup location, then decide which set of captures you are willing to replace.
Safer recovery sequence
- Identify the installed Snagit version and confirm that the missing capture was created under Snagit 2021 or earlier.
- Back up the current Library folder and the suspected Datastore folder without changing their contents.
- Open Snagit’s documented restore/import controls rather than dragging Datastore files into the current Library.
- Review the result before deleting or replacing any original folder.
If you only need one image, first search the backed-up Datastore or previous Library with your operating system’s file search. Restoring an entire Datastore is a larger operation and may replace current Library content.

Why a Snagit screenshot appears to be missing
The Library points somewhere else
Updates, administrator policies, or a previous relocation can leave Snagit looking at a different folder. Recheck the Library path in preferences and open that exact location in File Explorer or Finder.
A cloud folder is online-only
Make the Library folder and its files available offline, then allow synchronization to finish. Do not change the Library location while a provider is still moving files unless you have a complete backup.
You saved an export, not a Library capture
Look at the destination in the save dialog or the preset used for the capture. Search the date range in Desktop, Downloads, Pictures, and the project folder where you normally store deliverables.
The file type is filtered out
Search for common image extensions such as .png, .jpg, .jpeg, and .webp, as well as Snagit project or capture formats used by your version. Sort by modification date rather than relying on the visible filename.

- Confirm the Snagit version and operating system.
- Read the active Library location inside Snagit.
- Open that exact folder outside Snagit.
- Check whether cloud files are available offline.
- Determine whether the image was automatically retained or manually exported.
- Search by date and extension, not only by filename.
- For Snagit 2021 and earlier on Windows, investigate the Datastore only after backing up the current Library.
- Do not restore an old Datastore if replacing current Library captures would be unacceptable.
Keeping future captures easy to find
Choose a stable Library location
Use a folder that is backed up and consistently available. If you use cloud storage, enable offline availability and verify that another device can see completed files before treating synchronization as your only backup.
Separate working captures from deliverables
Keep the Snagit Library for capture history and export final PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF files into a project folder with a predictable naming convention. This prevents an exported copy from being confused with the Library original.
Record preset destinations
If a capture preset saves directly to a format and folder, document that destination for your team. Preset behavior can explain why an image never appears in the Library view.

Or skip the browser setup
If you need new website screenshots rather than an existing Snagit capture, ScreenshotNeo returns an image or PDF from one HTTP request. It removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server lets Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients use take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
See the parameter reference and options in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. This cURL example captures Stripe as WebP:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
The same request in Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
And in Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo includes full-page and element captures, device and viewport controls, custom CSS and JavaScript, waits, blocking rules, cookies and headers, PDF settings, caching, signed links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture, and a usage API. Every feature is on every plan. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Sign up free for ScreenshotNeo.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Snagit Library a separate database of screenshots?
No. It displays files from the folder configured as the Library location, so opening that folder in File Explorer or Finder shows the underlying files.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Will changing the Library location delete my old captures?
Changing the location does not automatically merge folders. Back up both locations and verify the displayed path before moving or restoring anything.
Why is the old Datastore path often mentioned online?
It applies to Snagit 2021 and earlier on Windows. Snagit 2022 and newer no longer use that Datastore folder.
