First identify the operation that stopped: navigation and application waits have their own timers, while ProtocolError: Page.captureScreenshot timed out means the DevTools Protocol capture request did not complete. Puppeteer 25.12.0 does not document a per-call screenshot timeout, so the reliable fix is to isolate the failing operation, reproduce it with the same browser and runtime conditions, then remove the page, protocol, or environment trigger.
Start by classifying the timeout
Save the complete error and stack trace before changing settings. These two failures require different investigations:
- Navigation or wait timeout:
goto(),waitForSelector(), a network-idle condition, or application code exceeded its wait. The screenshot may never have started. - Capture timeout: an error containing
Page.captureScreenshotindicates that Chromium did not finish the protocol request used to produce the image.
Record Puppeteer, Chrome/Chromium, Node.js, operating-system or container, headless mode, protocol (Chrome DevTools Protocol or WebDriver BiDi), launch/connect options, target type (HTML or an image), and whether other pages are opening, capturing, or closing at the same time. Those details define the reproducer.
What page.screenshot() actually supports
In Puppeteer 25.12.0, ScreenshotOptions includes:
captureBeyondViewport,clip, andfullPagefor geometry and page extent.encoding,type(PNG, JPEG, or WebP where supported),quality, andpathfor output.fromSurface,omitBackground, andoptimizeForSpeedfor rendering behavior.
There is no documented timeout field for the screenshot call. protocolTimeout controls protocol commands generally, but making it very large cannot repair a capture that is blocked by browser state, concurrency, or an environment-specific problem.

- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
Build a minimal, honest reproducer
- Keep the launch configuration, URL, viewport, headless setting, protocol, and wait condition that fail.
- Remove unrelated application actions, extra tabs, screenshot loops, and cleanup code.
- Run one page and one capture. Change one axis at a time: protocol, headless mode, concurrency, target content, navigation condition, container versus direct Node, and package/browser versions.
- Rethrow failures. Do not return an empty buffer or a success status after a rejected capture; that turns an outage into a corrupt image.
This baseline uses a bounded navigation wait and logs the capture failure without disguising it:
import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({ headless: true });
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setViewport({ width: 1440, height: 900, deviceScaleFactor: 1 });
await page.goto('https://example.com', {
waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded',
timeout: 30_000
});
await page.screenshot({ path: 'shot.png', fullPage: true });
} catch (error) {
console.error('Screenshot failed:', error.stack || error);
throw error;
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
If this works, add your waits, scripts, additional pages, and container settings back one at a time until the failing condition is identified.
Instrument protocol and browser activity
Enable Puppeteer protocol logging
Run the process with NODE_DEBUG="puppeteer:*". The output helps show the command sent before the request stopped. Protocol logs can include URLs, headers, cookies, and page data; redact them before sharing.

Inspect calls that never resolve
While debugging an asynchronous hang, inspect browser.debugInfo.pendingProtocolErrors. It exposes errors and stack traces for calls that initiated protocol work and remain pending. Treat the output as diagnostic data, not as a replacement for the original stack trace.

Capture Chromium’s own logs
When Chrome fails to launch or crashes, pass dumpio: true so the browser process writes its logs to Node’s standard output:
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({
headless: true,
dumpio: true
});
Check concurrency and page lifecycle timing
Do not assume every timeout is caused by image size. Puppeteer documents that BrowserContext.newPage(), Browser.newPage(), and Page.close() wait for an in-progress screenshot in that context. Page.bringToFront() does not wait for an existing screenshot. A queue that captures one page while another task closes pages or creates tabs can therefore produce timing-sensitive behavior.

Compare these two designs:
Single-page control test
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'one.png' });
await page.close();
Bounded parallelism
const limit = 3;
const queue = [...urls];
async function worker() {
while (queue.length) {
const url = queue.shift();
const page = await browser.newPage();
try {
await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded', timeout: 30_000 });
await page.screenshot({ path: `shots/${encodeURIComponent(url)}.png` });
} finally {
await page.close();
}
}
}
await Promise.all(Array.from({ length: limit }, worker));
If the single-page test succeeds and the parallel version fails, lower concurrency, ensure each page has one owner, and do not close or recycle a page until its screenshot promise has settled.
Use issue reports as experiments, not universal fixes
Puppeteer 22.12.1 on macOS
Issue #12712 reports Node 22.4.0, npm 10.8.1 and a Page.captureScreenshot timeout that persisted with protocolTimeout set to three minutes. In that reporter’s reproducer, switching to WebDriver BiDi, using headless: 'shell', or removing another page’s screenshot/close sequence stopped the failure. These are useful controlled experiments, not guaranteed remedies for other versions or platforms.
Docker and multiple tabs
Issue #14760, opened March 9, 2026, reports Puppeteer 24.38.0, Node v24.4.1, npm 11.4.2 on Linux. The reporter isolated a combination involving Docker, multiple tabs, a PNG target, and waitUntil: 'networkidle2'. Recreate that combination only if it matches your system; the report does not prove that Docker, PNG, or networkidle2 alone causes timeouts.

Target-specific ways to reduce capture work
- Use an element screenshot when you do not need the whole document:
await page.locator('.hero').screenshot({ path: 'hero.png' });(or anElementHandlein older code). - Use
fullPage: falseand an explicitclipfor a known region. - Reserve
fullPage: truefor pages that require it; very tall documents and lazy-loaded content increase rendering work. - Set
omitBackground,type, andqualitydeliberately. These affect output and encoding cost, but they do not create a documented per-call timeout. - Wait for a specific application-ready selector instead of using an indefinite or unnecessarily broad network-idle condition. A page with long-lived analytics, streams, or third-party requests may never become truly idle.
Failure symptoms and the next test
| Symptom | Likely boundary | Next test |
|---|---|---|
Error names Page.captureScreenshot |
Protocol capture or browser state | Run one page; enable protocol and browser logs; vary protocol/headless mode. |
goto() or waitForSelector() timeout |
Navigation or application readiness | Log the failing wait; test domcontentloaded and a concrete selector. |
| Only parallel jobs fail | Lifecycle or resource contention | Reduce workers; await every screenshot before close or reuse. |
| Only Docker fails | Container/browser/environment interaction | Compare the same versions and launch flags in a direct Node process. |
| Only PNG or image URLs fail | Target-specific rendering path | Compare an ordinary HTML page and the same image in a minimal page. |
Reliability and cost decisions
Pin and record Puppeteer, browser, and Node versions in the failing environment. Keep captures isolated from unrelated page work, cap concurrency, and retry only after collecting the first failure. A retry can hide a race and increase load; it is not a diagnosis. For production, emit a job ID, URL, operation stage, elapsed time, and error class, while excluding secrets and sensitive page content from logs.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server when you need a capture without maintaining Puppeteer, Chromium, and page-concurrency code. Before capture it accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result.
One GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`ScreenshotNeo HTTP ${res.status}`);
await Bun.write('shot.webp', res);
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for authentication, options, response headers, and signed links. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. Features include full-page lazy-image loading, CSS-selector element capture, device presets, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, waits, request blocking, headers and cookies, geolocation, PDF controls, caching, async webhooks, bulk capture of 100 URLs per call, usage data, and an OpenAPI specification. Can I pass timeout to page.screenshot()?
Not as a documented ScreenshotOptions field in Puppeteer 25.12.0. Put time limits around navigation or your own promise, and diagnose a capture protocol timeout separately.

Should I set protocolTimeout to several minutes?
It may change how long a protocol call is allowed to wait, but an issue report shows that three minutes did not resolve one capture failure. Treat it as an experiment, not a fix.
Why does Page.captureScreenshot fail only with several tabs?
Concurrent capture and page lifecycle operations can change timing. Reproduce with one page, then add bounded concurrency while awaiting every capture before closing or reusing a page.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does increasing navigation timeout fix a screenshot timeout?
Only if navigation is the operation that timed out. It cannot repair a stalled Page.captureScreenshot protocol request.

Are Docker and networkidle2 known universal causes?
No. A March 2026 issue reports that combination in one Linux reproduction; it is not a general diagnosis.
