First identify which preview is missing
A PSD may contain an embedded preview, but each application decides whether and how to use it. Check these surfaces independently:
- Finder icon view: the macOS file browser may show a generic Photoshop icon instead of artwork.
- Windows File Explorer: Explorer may show a generic icon if no PSD thumbnail handler is installed, even when the file contains a usable preview.
- Photoshop’s File > Open dialog: Photoshop uses its own image-preview preferences; this is separate from Finder and Explorer.
Test one ordinary PSD and one affected PSD. Record your operating-system and Photoshop versions before changing settings. This makes it easier to tell whether the problem is file-specific, application-specific or a platform limitation.
How Photoshop preview options work
Adobe’s current image-preview documentation distinguishes the options by destination. Macintosh Thumbnail displays a preview in Photoshop’s File > Open dialog. Menu wording can vary by Photoshop version and platform, but the setting is generally under Preferences > File Handling > Image Previews. Adobe advises selecting only the preview types you need “to reduce file size and speed up saving.” The documentation does not give a fixed file-size penalty, so treat the setting as a trade-off rather than a guaranteed percentage increase.
Safe diagnostic procedure
- Duplicate the affected PSD in Finder or Explorer. Work on the copy, not the layered original.
- Open Photoshop’s preferences and locate Image Previews under File Handling.
- Enable Macintosh Thumbnail when the missing preview is in Photoshop’s Open dialog on a Mac.
- Enable Windows Thumbnail when a Windows viewer or handler needs an embedded Windows preview.
- Save the copy, close and reopen the file browser, and compare the test PSD with the original.
If Photoshop’s Open dialog still has no preview after saving a copy, the file may be damaged, unusually structured or unsupported by that Photoshop release. Do not overwrite the original while diagnosing it.
Fixing PSD thumbnails on macOS Finder
Check Finder’s own icon-preview setting
Finder icon previews are not the same feature as Photoshop’s Macintosh Thumbnail option. In Finder, switch to View > as Icons, open View > Show View Options, and verify that Show icon preview is enabled. Adobe Community discussions identify this check as a common cause when Finder shows icons but Photoshop previews work.
If Finder remains inconsistent, test several PSDs and note whether the failure affects files from one application, folder or storage volume. Record the macOS and Photoshop versions. Community reports describe inconsistent Finder behavior, but no single universal current Finder fix is established in Adobe’s documentation.

Separate Finder problems from Photoshop problems
- If Photoshop’s Open dialog shows a preview but Finder does not, focus on Finder’s icon-preview setting and its file-view cache rather than resaving every PSD.
- If neither Finder nor Photoshop shows a preview, save a copy with the appropriate Photoshop preview enabled and test that copy.
- If only one PSD fails, suspect that file’s embedded composite, corruption or unusual save history before changing system-wide settings.
Fixing PSD thumbnails in Windows File Explorer
Confirm that a PSD thumbnail handler exists
Windows Explorer may not provide native PSD thumbnail generation. An Adobe Community Expert states that Explorer does not display PSD thumbnails by itself and that third-party codecs or handlers are used. This is community guidance, not a current Microsoft specification, so check the handler installed on your system before assuming a Photoshop preference can solve the problem.
Open a folder containing a known-good image and an affected PSD, choose View > Large icons (or a larger icon size), and compare the results. If every PSD is a generic icon, the likely issue is missing or disabled handler support. If some PSDs preview and others do not, the handler may be reading an embedded composite that is absent or unusable in the failing files.
Use Photoshop to create a test preview
- Make a copy of one failing PSD.
- In Photoshop, enable Windows Thumbnail in Preferences > File Handling > Image Previews.
- Save the copy and return to Explorer.
- Allow Explorer to refresh the folder, then compare the copy with the original.
Contributors in the Adobe Community discussion report that some handlers rely on a flattened composite preview embedded in the PSD. Enabling the preview and resaving a copy is therefore a reasonable diagnostic step, not a guaranteed fix for every handler or file.
Do not start with destructive cache or registry changes
Deleting thumbnail caches or editing the registry can remove useful evidence and may not add PSD support when no handler is installed. Identify the handler and its compatibility requirements first. If an organization manages your Windows image, ask its administrator which codec or thumbnail extension is approved.

When only certain PSD files fail
Check the file’s save path and integrity
Copy the PSD to a local drive and test it there. A network share, removable drive, cloud placeholder or interrupted sync can prevent a browser from reading the embedded preview even when Photoshop can eventually open the layered document. If the local copy works, resolve the storage or synchronization issue rather than changing every Photoshop preference.
Check whether the document has a usable composite
Some handlers need a flattened composite representation. A PSD can open correctly in Photoshop yet lack the preview data a handler expects. Resave a duplicate with the relevant preview enabled. Keep the layered original untouched and compare the duplicate’s behavior.
Consider compatibility and unusual documents
Very large files, documents created by older software, files with unusual color modes or files that were interrupted during saving can expose differences between Photoshop and third-party handlers. There is no documented universal size threshold or failure rate, so diagnose with a small, ordinary PSD and the same handler before drawing conclusions.

If you need to inspect many image files, Adobe Bridge may be relevant, but the commonly cited cache instructions are from an archived Bridge CS3 guide. Treat that guide as historical context, not as a guaranteed menu path or cache behavior for current Bridge releases.

Performance, storage and reliability considerations
- Embedding previews can make saving slower and increase file size; Adobe recommends selecting only the preview types you actually use.
- Saving a preview does not install a Windows handler. It supplies data for a compatible viewer to consume.
- Changing a preference globally can affect future files, so use a duplicate for diagnosis and confirm the result before adopting it for production work.
- Keep layered originals backed up before batch-resaving documents. A thumbnail fix is not worth risking the source artwork.

Can I repair a missing thumbnail without opening Photoshop?
