Your channel must be verified. Shorts follow a similar desktop workflow, but YouTube’s current instructions require a computer for custom Shorts thumbnails.
This guide covers the exact desktop and Android paths, image dimensions and file limits, Shorts behavior, eligibility rules, troubleshooting, and YouTube’s optional thumbnail testing feature.
What you need before uploading
- A verified YouTube account. Custom thumbnails are not available until the channel is verified.
- An image that follows YouTube’s recommended dimensions, aspect ratio, file type, and size limit for the upload device.
- Content that complies with YouTube’s Community Guidelines. Prohibited thumbnail material can trigger removal, strikes, or loss of thumbnail privileges.
YouTube describes custom thumbnails as a quick snapshot of your content. The current official specifications are recommendations and limits shown in YouTube Help; the pages do not attach a publication year to these figures. See YouTube’s computer instructions before publishing if your Studio interface differs.
Thumbnail dimensions and upload limits

Use the aspect ratio of the intended placement. A 16:9 image is appropriate for a standard video, while a Short is designed around a vertical 9:16 image. If a vertical video uses a 16:9 custom thumbnail, YouTube says it may substitute an automatically generated 4:5 image on Home, Explore, and subscription pages. The custom image can still appear in the watch feed, watch history, and on non-mobile platforms.

The 2 MB limit applies to mobile video-thumbnail uploads, so an image that works in desktop Studio may need resizing or stronger compression before you select it on a phone.
Add a custom thumbnail to a standard video on a computer
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Choose Content from the left-hand menu.
- Open the video whose thumbnail you want to add or replace.
- In the Thumbnail section, choose Upload file. Select the JPG or PNG on your computer. You may also see Get suggestions.
- Choose Save. Return to the video details page if you need to replace the image later.
If the upload control is missing, verify the channel first. A successful upload can still take time to appear everywhere YouTube displays the video.
Change a thumbnail in the Android YouTube Studio app
- Open the YouTube Studio app and select Content.
- Tap the video you want to edit.
- Tap Edit, then Edit thumbnail.
- Choose an automatically generated option or tap Custom thumbnail and select an image from the device.
- Confirm the selection and save the video details.
YouTube’s Android Help page documents custom thumbnails for standard videos in the Studio app. It does not provide the same phone workflow for custom Shorts thumbnails; the current instructions direct creators to a computer for Shorts.

Add a custom thumbnail to a YouTube Short
Use YouTube Studio on a computer:
- Sign in to YouTube Studio and select Content.
- Open the Shorts tab.
- Select the Short you want to edit.
- In Thumbnail, choose Upload file and select your vertical image.
- Choose Save.
YouTube notes that a Shorts thumbnail change may take time to appear. The desktop Shorts file limit listed in Help is 50 MB, and the recommended canvas is 2160 × 3840 pixels (9:16). If you are trying to do this entirely from a phone, switch to a computer for the custom-upload control.
Use Ask Studio to develop thumbnail ideas
YouTube documents an Ask Studio workflow that can suggest thumbnail concepts from a video’s transcript and themes. You can prompt Ask Studio to create a concept, provide the video or reference images, request revisions, and review the resulting suggestions. Treat the result as an image to evaluate against your title and content, then upload the chosen file through the normal Thumbnail section. Availability and interface labels can vary by account.

Your channel is not verified
Verification is required for custom thumbnails. Complete YouTube’s account-verification process, then reopen Studio. If the upload control does not appear immediately, sign out and back in or allow the account status time to update.

You reached the daily upload limit
YouTube applies a daily custom-thumbnail upload limit that can vary by country or region and by channel history. When Studio shows Daily custom thumbnail limit reached, YouTube advises trying again after 24 hours. Copyright or Community Guidelines strikes can affect eligibility or limits.
The image exceeds a device limit
For standard video thumbnails, YouTube lists 2 MB for mobile uploads and 50 MB for desktop uploads. Compress the image, reduce its pixel dimensions, or perform the upload from a computer. Shorts have a listed 50 MB desktop limit.
The file has the wrong shape or type
Use JPG or PNG. Prepare a 16:9 image for a standard video and a 9:16 image for a Short. Check that the actual pixel dimensions meet the minimum width or height, rather than relying only on the file’s displayed size.
The thumbnail violates policy
YouTube can reject thumbnails containing nudity or sexually provocative material, hate speech, violence, or harmful or dangerous content. Repeated violations may cause a 30-day loss of custom-thumbnail privileges or account termination. YouTube may also disable custom thumbnails for particular search results it considers inappropriate for viewers.

The new image is not visible yet
Thumbnail changes can take time to propagate. Check the video’s watch page and Studio after waiting, and test in another browser or an incognito window to avoid a cached image. A vertical video can also show YouTube’s 4:5 generated image on Home, Explore, or subscription pages even when your custom image remains available in other surfaces.

- Keep the main subject and any essential text inside the center of the canvas so it remains readable in small previews.
- Use strong contrast between lettering and background; preview the image at phone size.
- Make the image accurately represent the video. Misleading or sensational imagery can create policy problems and disappoint viewers.
- Export the final file as JPG or PNG and check its byte size, pixel dimensions, and aspect ratio before uploading.
- For Shorts, review the vertical crop on the surfaces where YouTube may display a generated 4:5 version.
Test alternative thumbnails in YouTube Studio
YouTube Help describes Test & compare thumbnails, which can compare up to three thumbnails. The documented workflow is on computers in YouTube Studio and requires advanced features. It supports public long-form videos and podcast episodes; private videos, made-for-kids videos, and mature-audience videos are excluded.
Eligibility and interface details can change, so check the current Test & compare thumbnails documentation for your account. The first uploaded thumbnail may remain the default in some cases, and YouTube explains that lower-resolution test images can be downscaled. Use alternatives that differ in one meaningful idea—such as subject framing or text treatment—rather than submitting near-identical files.

Yes. Set the thumbnail while editing the video in Studio; publication status affects eligibility for Test & compare, not the basic upload path.

Will changing a thumbnail alter the video or its URL?
No. The action changes the image associated with the existing video; it does not create a new upload or URL.
Can I use the same image for a Short and a regular video?
You can upload an image file to either video, but separate 16:9 and 9:16 versions are usually needed to match YouTube’s recommended placements and avoid unwanted cropping.
Why does my thumbnail look different on Home than on the watch page?
YouTube can substitute a 4:5 generated image for a vertical video on Home, Explore, and subscription pages. The custom image may still be used in the watch feed, watch history, and non-mobile experiences.
