Grok Computer Use: What It Does, How to Set It Up, and Where It Stops

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Grok Computer Use is Grok Bot’s agent capability for completing multi-step work on a persistent cloud computer. Instead of only answering in chat, a Bot can open a browser, use connected apps, work with files and a terminal, and continue running after you close your laptop. It still needs you for passwords, passkeys, two-factor codes, CAPTCHAs and other human-only checkpoints, and a website can block or interrupt automation.

What Grok Computer Use actually is

Grok Bot is presented as an AI teammate rather than a conventional question-and-answer assistant. You give it a goal, relevant context, available tools, boundaries and the desired result. It can then plan and execute a sequence of actions across websites, apps and files on a cloud computer.

Connectors are used when an app has a supported integration. For other interactions, the Bot uses the cloud computer’s browser, filesystem and terminal. You can watch progress, provide information during the run and review drafts before anything consequential is sent or published.

The computer is persistent for your account. Closing the desktop client does not automatically stop work that is running in the cloud, although a task can still pause for approval, a login or a blocked page.

How a Bot completes a task

1. Describe the outcome

A useful request specifies the starting data, tools or sites to use, constraints and what should be returned. For example, a sales workflow could ask the Bot to assemble a list from a CRM, research each account, draft outreach and leave every message as a draft for approval. That is an example workflow, not a reported performance result.

2. Let it use connectors or the computer

When a connector exists, it gives the Bot a more structured way to read or change data. For unsupported sites, computer use provides visual browser interaction. Bots can also learn a demonstrated workflow and save it as a reusable skill or routine.

3. Take over when a human step appears

If a site asks for a password, passkey, two-factor code or CAPTCHA, take control of the computer, complete that step yourself, and return control to the Bot. The Bot is expected to hand off these checks rather than bypass them.

4. Review before high-impact actions

Put approval boundaries in the Bot’s description. Ask it to stop before sending messages, publishing content, deleting records, purchasing anything or changing a production system. Depending on the tool, action risk and review settings, Grok may pause automatically for confirmation.

What you need before using it

  • A desktop client for macOS, Windows or Linux.
  • A Cursor account for authentication.
  • Either a paid individual Cursor plan or Cursor Teams, or a linked individual SuperGrok subscription. Eligibility and included usage can change, so check the current access terms before subscribing.
  • Cloud data storage enabled. Grok Bot does not support Legacy Privacy Mode.

iOS and Android companion apps are also listed in the FAQ, but task execution occurs on Cursor’s cloud computer rather than on the phone itself.

Setup: from download to first task

  1. Download the Cursor desktop client for your operating system.
  2. Sign in with your Cursor account.
  3. If you are using SuperGrok as the access route, link that subscription when prompted.
  4. Confirm that cloud storage and the account’s data settings meet your organization’s requirements.
  5. Create or select a Bot. Describe the task, the sites or apps it may use, information it may change, and actions that always require your approval.
  6. Start with a reversible task, such as collecting information or preparing drafts. Watch the run so you can take over if authentication or a CAPTCHA appears.

Because the computer is persistent, a browser login or file placed there can remain available to other Bots on the same account. Treat every Bot in that account as sharing the same working environment.

What it is good at

Cross-application research and preparation

A Bot can gather information from several sites, organize it in files or a connected app, and produce a draft for review. The value is the sequence of actions, not a claim that every site or workflow will work unattended.

Repetitive browser workflows

Forms, searches, downloads and routine checks can be delegated when the site permits automation. Demonstrating the process once can let a Bot save it as a skill or routine.

Operational investigation

The product page gives bug reproduction and product-performance work as examples. These are vendor examples, not independent accuracy or speed benchmarks.

Human-in-the-loop execution

You can let the Bot do the mechanical parts while retaining control over authentication, approvals and irreversible changes. Clear stop conditions are more reliable than a vague instruction to “handle everything.”

Can Grok Bot use any website?

No. A site may block automation, require a new login, present a CAPTCHA or require human confirmation. Sessions can expire while a task is running, and some pages will not load correctly in an automated browser. When that happens, use a connector if one is available, take over for the human checkpoint, or redesign the workflow around an export or approved integration.

Do not instruct the Bot to defeat a CAPTCHA, evade a bot check or circumvent an access control. Those are precisely the cases where the documented behavior is to stop and ask you to intervene.

Privacy and account boundaries

All Bots on one account share the computer

Files, browser sessions and app logins on the assigned cloud computer are available to the account’s Bots. Separate Bot names are not a security boundary. Use separate accounts or approved environments when projects must be isolated.

Cloud storage is required

Grok Bot requires cloud data storage and uses Cursor authentication and data settings. Legacy Privacy Mode is not supported. Review those settings before placing confidential files or authenticated sessions on the computer.

Team administration varies by plan

Team documentation describes optional action recording and export controls, with some administrative features limited to Enterprise. Verify the current plan and settings before promising a particular retention, audit or export capability.

Access, usage and billing

Access route What the documentation says What to verify
Paid individual Cursor plan Grok Bot is included. Current eligible plans and weekly usage.
Cursor Teams Grok Bot is included for Teams. Team controls, limits and administrator requirements.
Individual SuperGrok subscription SuperGrok, SuperGrok Plus or SuperGrok Heavy can be linked. Linking requirements, weekly allowance and current terms.

Subscriptions include weekly usage. Eligible accounts may add on-demand usage billed from model and token cost. The displayed prices on product pages are commercial terms that can change, so use the official access and pricing pages at the time you subscribe rather than relying on an old price comparison.

Performance and reliability realities

  • Cloud persistence: work can continue after the laptop is closed, but it is not a guarantee that a run will finish unattended.
  • Session lifetime: an expired login can stop the workflow until you authenticate again.
  • Site behavior: rate limits, bot protection, dynamic pages and missing connectors can all change the result.
  • Approval pauses: sending, publishing, deleting, buying or production changes may wait for your confirmation.
  • Usage limits: weekly allowances and any on-demand charges depend on the current subscription and account eligibility.

For dependable automation, break a large job into checkpoints, save intermediate output, specify what to do when data is missing, and require approval before irreversible actions.

Troubleshooting common failures

The Bot stops at a login screen

Cause: the session expired or the site requires a fresh sign-in. Fix: take over the cloud computer, enter the password or passkey and complete two-factor authentication, then return control.

A CAPTCHA or bot check appears

Cause: the site is challenging automation. Fix: solve it yourself if you are authorized to access the site; never ask the Bot to bypass it. If challenges recur, use a supported connector or an approved export.

The page will not load or actions are ignored

Cause: automation is blocked, the page is highly dynamic, or a required connector is unavailable. Fix: try the connector, simplify the task into smaller steps, wait for the page to finish loading, or provide the needed data directly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A task changes more than intended

Cause: the Bot had insufficient boundaries. Fix: state exactly which records, accounts and environments it may touch; require approval before sending, deleting, purchasing or deploying.

Another Bot sees a previous session or file

Cause: Bots on the same account share the persistent computer. Fix: remove sensitive artifacts, sign out of apps when appropriate, or use a separate account/environment for isolation.

Need a clean screenshot instead of browser automation?

If your goal is to capture a webpage rather than operate it, ScreenshotNeo is a simpler API alternative. It accepts a URL and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. It removes cookie-consent banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture, and only clean shots are billed; bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

Or skip the browser setup:

Use the one-call API shown in the ScreenshotNeo documentation:
