How to Capture a Full-Page Screenshot on a Chromebook

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To capture an entire scrolling webpage on a Chromebook, use Chrome DevTools rather than the Chromebook’s ordinary Screenshot tool. Open the page, switch DevTools to device mode, open the device-mode More options menu, and select Capture a full size screenshot. Chrome saves the resulting image, including content below the visible viewport, to your Downloads folder by default.

Full screen versus full page

A full-screen screenshot records what is currently displayed. A full-page screenshot records the whole webpage, including content you would normally have to scroll down to see. Those are different jobs.

Google Chromebook Help documents three built-in capture choices: full screen, partial screen and window. The instructions do not describe that tool as an automatic scrolling webpage capture. See Google’s Chromebook screenshot instructions.

Chrome DevTools has a separate command specifically for the page-length use case. Chrome’s documentation says that Capture a full size screenshot includes content that is not currently visible in the viewport.

Method 1: Chrome DevTools’ full-size capture

  1. Open the webpage in Chrome. Wait for the page to finish loading. If the page changes as you scroll, allow important images, menus or sections to appear before capturing.
  2. Open DevTools. Use the Chrome menu’s developer-tools entry if available on your Chromebook, or the DevTools keyboard shortcut configured for your ChromeOS and keyboard layout. The exact shortcut can vary, so the menu route is the safer instruction for managed or customized devices.
  3. Turn on device mode. In DevTools, select the device-mode control (the phone-and-tablet icon). A responsive preview appears above the page.
  4. Open More options. In the device-mode toolbar, open More options.
  5. Choose Capture a full size screenshot. Chrome renders the page beyond the current viewport and creates one image containing the full page.
  6. Find the file. Open the Chromebook Files app and select Downloads. Google says screenshots are saved there by default. Chromebook’s Screen Capture settings can instead direct captures to a folder you choose.

Chrome’s developer documentation describes the command as: “To capture a screenshot of the whole page including the content that isn’t currently visible in the viewport, select Capture a full size screenshot from the same menu.” See Chrome for Developers’ device-mode documentation.

What this method captures

  • Content below the visible browser window.
  • The page as Chrome renders it at the selected device-mode width and scale.
  • A single image rather than a series of separate viewport screenshots.

The result is not guaranteed to represent every unusual page architecture. A site may use an internal scrolling panel instead of the document itself, load content only after interaction, or embed content from another frame. Treat those cases as page-specific rather than assuming the command can capture every nested or dynamic scroller.

Preparing a page for a cleaner capture

Let lazy content load

Many pages request images and cards only as they approach the viewport. Scroll through the page once, wait for important media to appear, then run the full-size command. Otherwise, the screenshot can contain empty placeholders where the site had not yet loaded content.

Close overlays that belong in the image

Cookie dialogs, newsletter prompts, chat bubbles and sticky banners can cover page content. Dismiss them before opening the capture menu if you need an unobstructed result. If a dialog is part of what you are documenting, leave it open deliberately.

Choose the intended responsive layout

Device mode changes the viewport width, so a page may switch between desktop, tablet and mobile layouts. Select a width that matches the design you need to document. A very narrow width can create an unusually tall image; a wide width can hide mobile-only navigation.

Capture authenticated or private pages carefully

DevTools captures what your browser can see, including account data. Check the image before sharing it, and store it where other users of the Chromebook cannot access it.

Where Chromebook saves screenshots

For the standard Chromebook capture workflow, Google identifies Downloads as the default destination. In the Screen Capture settings, you can select another folder. After DevTools creates the file, use Files to rename it, move it to Drive, or attach it to a document.

Very tall pages can produce large image files. If an email, editor or chat service rejects the image, resize or convert a copy rather than altering the original capture.

Method 2: a Chrome extension

An extension can be convenient when you capture long pages frequently or want a toolbar button. The Chrome Web Store listing for FullPage Capture – Full Page Screenshot advertises scrolling capture that stitches page sections into a long screenshot, with PNG, JPEG and PDF export. Its listing is at Chrome Web Store: FullPage Capture – Full Page Screenshot.

  • Fast WiFi and Bluetooth, Integrated Webcam

  1. Open the extension’s Chrome Web Store listing.
  2. Review the permissions and your school or employer’s extension policy.
  3. Install it only if extensions are permitted on the Chromebook.
  4. Open the target page and use the extension’s capture command.
  5. Check the stitched output for duplicated sections, missing lazy-loaded content or fixed banners.

The extension’s scrolling and export capabilities are publisher claims in the listing; they were not independently tested here. DevTools is the documented Chrome route and requires no additional extension installation.

Choosing the right route

Need Best starting point Why
One or occasional full-page capture Chrome DevTools Built into Chrome and explicitly provides Capture a full size screenshot.
A toolbar button and optional PDF export Extension The listed extension advertises one-click-style scrolling capture and PNG/JPEG/PDF output.
Managed Chromebook that blocks extensions Chrome DevTools It avoids requesting permission to install another browser component.
Automated captures for development or publishing ScreenshotNeo An API and MCP server remove the need to operate a browser manually.

Troubleshooting full-page captures

The full-size command is missing

Confirm that you are in device mode and that you opened the device-mode More options menu, not a general DevTools menu. If device mode is unavailable, an administrator may restrict developer tools; use the Chromebook’s approved support route or an allowed extension instead.

The image contains only the visible area

You likely used the regular full-screen, window or partial capture command. Return to DevTools, enable device mode, and choose Capture a full size screenshot.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Images or sections are blank

Reload the page, wait for network activity to settle, and scroll through it once so lazy-loaded elements request their assets. Some sites still load content only after a click or account action; perform that action before capturing.

A fixed header or chat widget covers content

Close or dismiss the overlay before capture. If it returns after scrolling, try the site’s own dismissal control; otherwise the page may require a different capture workflow.

The page uses an inner scrolling panel

DevTools’ full-size command targets the document. An application with a separate scrollable panel may require capturing that panel separately or using the application’s export feature. This behavior is not established for every site.

The extension cannot be installed

Chromebooks managed by a school or organization can block Web Store installations. Do not attempt to bypass that policy. Use DevTools if it is available, or ask the administrator to approve an appropriate tool.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The file is too large to share

Keep the original in Downloads, then create a resized or compressed copy. For a long document that must remain readable, PDF may be more practical than one extremely tall bitmap, if your chosen workflow supports PDF output.

Or skip the browser setup: ScreenshotNeo

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. A single request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF, so you can capture a URL from a script or let an AI agent call it without opening Chrome DevTools.

Example cURL request (see the ScreenshotNeo documentation):

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

Before capture, ScreenshotNeo can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

FAQ

Can the Chromebook Screenshot key capture an entire webpage?

Google’s standard Chromebook capture instructions cover full-screen, partial and window screenshots; they do not describe the Screenshot key as a scrolling webpage capture. Use DevTools’ full-size command for that purpose.

Does the stylus option labeled “full-page screenshot” mean a webpage-length image?

Google’s stylus help uses that label but directs users to Capture screen. The general Chromebook capture documentation does not define that action as an automatic scroll-and-stitch webpage capture, so do not rely on the label alone for a whole document.

Can I save a full-page capture directly as a PDF?

DevTools’ documented command creates a screenshot image. For PDF output, use a workflow that explicitly supports PDF, such as an allowed extension that advertises PDF export or an automated service such as ScreenshotNeo.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will this work on every Chromebook?

The documented commands are Chrome features, but managed-device policies, Chrome versions and unusual page implementations can affect availability or results. If DevTools is blocked, ask the administrator which capture method is approved.
