What grouping does—and what it does not do
A group gives multiple selected items a shared unit for operations such as moving or transforming. It does not make the children disappear: they remain individual elements or layers in the editor’s hierarchy, and some editors let you select and edit a child without breaking the group. Grouping is useful when several parts of a composition should stay together while you arrange the rest of the page or artwork.
Grouping is not the same as combining items into one flattened image. The documented workflows here create a group or grouped layers, not a single rasterized object. Also, a group is not necessarily the same thing as a frame: Figma, for example, distinguishes groups from frames, whose dimensions are explicitly set by the user.
The reliable general workflow
- Select the intended items. Select objects on the canvas or layers in the layer panel, depending on the editor. Check that you have not included an adjacent object by mistake.
- Use that editor’s Group command. It may be on a floating toolbar, in a menu, or available from the layer panel. Use the app-specific directions below.
- Test the group as a unit. Move or transform it, then inspect the result. In Figma the group bounds follow the combined dimensions of its children; Canva documents that groups can be moved, resized, rotated, and animated as a unit.
- Edit a member or separate the group. Where supported, select an individual child while the group remains intact. Otherwise, or when you want the items independent again, use Ungroup.
After grouping, check the layer hierarchy and stacking order. Grouping can have editor-specific consequences beyond simply keeping items together.

Group elements in Canva
Select and group
- Select the elements you want together by dragging across them or by Shift-clicking each element.
- Choose Group on the floating toolbar.
- Use Command+G on Mac or Ctrl+G on Windows as the documented grouping shortcut.
Canva’s developer documentation describes grouped elements as movable, resizable, rotatable, and animatable as a unit. If you need to adjust one element without separating the rest, Canva’s help instructions describe selecting an element inside a selected group and changing it while keeping the group intact.
Canva limitations to check
- Charts, tables, and grids can be grouped, but sheet elements cannot.
- Content created by third-party apps cannot be grouped with other elements until you download it as an image and re-upload it.
These are meaningful content-type exceptions: if Group is unavailable or the elements do not behave as expected, check whether the selection contains sheet elements or third-party-app content.

Group layers in Figma
Create a group and edit a child
- Select the layers you want to group.
- Choose Group or press Command+G on Mac or Control+G on Windows.
- To select a child layer, double-click it or choose it in the layers panel.
Figma groups can be nested, and the group’s bounds adjust to the combined dimensions of its children. That is different from a frame: Figma says a frame has dimensions explicitly set by the user. Choose a group when you want a container whose bounds follow its contents; choose a frame when the container’s dimensions should be set independently.

Ungroup in Figma
Select the group and use the listed ungroup shortcut: Shift+Command+G or Command+Delete on Mac; Shift+Control+G or Control+Backspace on Windows. Because the page lists more than one shortcut for each platform, use the one that works in your setup and verify the selected object is the group you intend to remove.

Group objects in Adobe Illustrator
Group and ungroup objects
- Choose the Selection tool and select the objects to group.
- Choose Object > Group.
- To separate the objects, right-click and choose Ungroup.
Grouped items appear as <Group> items in the Layers panel. Illustrator also documents Ungroup All, which removes nested groupings as well. Use that when the selection contains groups inside other groups and you intend to remove all those levels—not merely the outer group.
Check stacking order after grouping
Illustrator grouping can affect stacking order: grouped objects stack behind the frontmost object and may shift to the topmost selected layer. If an object appears to move behind or in front of something unexpectedly, inspect the Layers panel and stacking order rather than assuming the selection failed.

Group layers in Adobe Photoshop
Create a layer group
- Select multiple layers in the Layers panel.
- Choose Layer > Group Layers.
- Alternatively, on macOS Option-drag the selected layers to the folder at the bottom of the Layers panel; on Windows, use Alt-drag to that folder.
To add layers, create a layer while the group is selected or drag layers or groups into the group. To separate the layers, choose Layer > Ungroup Layers.
Adobe’s Photoshop instructions are in Group and ungroup layers. The page states it was last updated February 23, 2026.

Use the application’s own terminology when looking for the command: Canva commonly refers to elements, Figma and Photoshop to layers, and Illustrator to objects. The safest general approach is to select carefully, invoke the matching Group command, and inspect the resulting hierarchy and order.

Ungroup without disrupting the rest of the composition
- Select the group itself, not an unrelated parent or neighboring object.
- Use the editor’s Ungroup command or documented shortcut.
- If the group is nested, decide whether you want to remove only one level or all levels. Illustrator documents Ungroup All specifically for nested groupings.
- Inspect the resulting individual elements or layers and their order before making further edits.
Ungrouping is appropriate when the members need to be arranged independently. If you only need to change one child and the editor supports in-group selection, edit that child instead so the overall group remains intact.

Group is unavailable or does not include every selected item
- Confirm that the intended elements or layers are selected; in Canva, select by dragging or Shift-clicking, and in Photoshop select multiple layers in the Layers panel.
- In Canva, check whether the selection includes sheet elements, which cannot be grouped, or third-party-app content, which must be downloaded as an image and re-uploaded before grouping with other elements.
A child is hard to select
In Figma, double-click the child or choose it in the layers panel. In Canva, its instructions describe selecting an element inside the selected group. These approaches let you work with an individual member without first dismantling the whole group.
The grouped objects changed order
For Illustrator, inspect the Layers panel and stacking order: grouping may place the group behind the frontmost object and may shift it to the topmost selected layer. The documented order effect is specific to Illustrator; do not assume it applies to Canva, Figma, or Photoshop.
Ungrouping did not remove every group level
Check whether the selected group contains nested groups. Illustrator’s Ungroup All removes nested groupings as well as the outer grouping. In other editors, use the documented Ungroup command and inspect the hierarchy after each operation rather than expecting Illustrator’s command behavior to apply universally.
