TikTok Open Graph Image Generator: Create and Test Link Preview Images

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A TikTok Open Graph image generator creates the image file that may appear beside a shared web link, but it does not by itself connect that image to your page. To give a page a chance of producing a useful preview, create a readable image at a stable public URL, add the Open Graph tags to the page’s rendered HTML, and test the published URL. TikTok does not publish a universal specification promising that every external link will use those tags in every app version, region, or sharing surface.

What a TikTok Open Graph image generator actually does

An image generator produces a PNG, JPEG, or WebP containing the visual treatment you want associated with a page: a headline, product image, logo, or other context. Open Graph metadata is the separate step that tells software which image belongs to which URL.

The core Open Graph properties are og:title, og:type, og:image, and og:url. og:description is recommended. Image details can be supplied with og:image:url, og:image:secure_url, og:image:type, og:image:width, og:image:height, and og:image:alt. The protocol specifically says: “If the page specifies an og:image it should specify og:image:alt.”

Generating an image without adding these tags leaves the page’s metadata unchanged. Conversely, adding tags that point to a missing, private, or unstable file gives a crawler nothing usable to retrieve.

How to create the image and attach it to a page

  1. Choose the sharing message. Keep important text large and near the center. A preview may be cropped or displayed at a different size, so do not put essential words at the extreme edges.
  2. Export a web image. PNG is useful for crisp text and transparency; JPEG is usually smaller for photographs; WebP can reduce transfer size when the consuming service accepts it. The Open Graph example in the protocol uses 400 × 300 pixels as illustrative markup, not as a TikTok requirement. The available sources do not establish a universal TikTok width, height, or aspect ratio.
  3. Publish the file at a stable HTTPS URL. It must be reachable without a login, return an image content type, and remain available after the page is shared. Avoid URLs that expire immediately or require browser-only JavaScript to reveal the file.
  4. Add metadata to the server-rendered document. Put the tags in the <head> of the HTML response for the exact URL people will share.
  5. Deploy and inspect the live URL. Test the production address, not a localhost route or an editor preview. A preview checker can reveal missing tags, redirects, blocked resources, and image-fetch errors, but its result is not a guarantee that TikTok will display the same card everywhere.

Copy-and-adapt HTML

<head>
  <meta property="og:title" content="How to choose a standing desk">
  <meta property="og:type" content="article">
  <meta property="og:url" content="https://example.com/guides/standing-desks">
  <meta property="og:description" content="A practical guide to sizes, controls, and stability.">
  <meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/images/standing-desk-guide.webp">
  <meta property="og:image:secure_url" content="https://example.com/images/standing-desk-guide.webp">
  <meta property="og:image:type" content="image/webp">
  <meta property="og:image:width" content="1200">
  <meta property="og:image:height" content="630">
  <meta property="og:image:alt" content="Illustration of a standing desk beside a checklist">
</head>

Use dimensions that suit your broader sharing targets rather than treating 1200 × 630 in this example as a TikTok rule. Keep the declared width, height, MIME type, and file itself consistent.

What is known about TikTok link previews

TikTok’s official developer material covers particular products, not a universal contract for arbitrary website links. App setup documentation identifies URL verification as required for some capabilities, including Link Sharing (beta). That requirement belongs to the developer product and should not be confused with adding Open Graph tags to an ordinary website.

A third-party TikTok preview utility describes a card containing an image, title, and domain. It says its TikTokSpider does not execute JavaScript and respects robots.txt. Those are claims about that utility’s checker and its interpretation of a crawler; the official TikTok documentation reviewed does not confirm them as rules for every TikTok surface. Treat client-rendered-only metadata and crawler access as practical risks, not as a proven universal TikTok specification.

TikTok Minis have a separate sharing interface with explicit title, desc, and imageUrl parameters. Those fields apply to a Minis integration and do not prove how TikTok handles a normal external URL pasted or shared from a website.

Image design decisions that survive cropping

Make the subject obvious at a glance

Use one primary subject and a short headline. Strong contrast, generous margins, and a simple background help when the image is reduced. If a logo is required, keep it away from the main text so either element remains legible when cropped.

Keep text accessible

The image is not a substitute for HTML text. Repeat the page’s meaning in og:title, og:description, and og:image:alt. Alt text should describe the image’s purpose, not paste a keyword list.

Avoid accidental branding in posting integrations

TikTok’s Content Sharing Guidelines concern apps that post content through an API. They require user awareness and control, including a preview and express consent before upload, and they disallow promotional branding or watermarks superimposed on content shared to TikTok. Those rules matter when building a posting integration; they do not turn an Open Graph image generator into a posting client.

Why a preview may be missing or wrong

Symptom Likely cause What to check
No image, title, or description Tags are absent from the HTML returned for the shared URL. View the raw response source and confirm the og: properties are in the document head.
Old image remains A crawler or preview service has cached an earlier response. Verify the live tags and image URL, then retest later. Cache refresh timing is not specified consistently for TikTok.
Image URL appears but no picture loads The file is private, blocked, redirected unexpectedly, expired, or returns the wrong content type. Request the image URL directly; check HTTPS, status code, redirects, and Content-Type.
Metadata appears in a browser but not in a checker The tags are injected only after JavaScript runs. Render the tags in the initial server response. A third-party checker says its TikTokSpider does not execute JavaScript.
Preview varies between devices or accounts Different app versions, regions, surfaces, or cached results may be involved. Compare the exact URL and document response; do not infer a universal TikTok rule from one result.
Everything works except a protected site Bot checks, consent gates, authentication, or robots rules prevent retrieval. Test whether an unauthenticated crawler can reach the page and image without a browser session.

How to test before publishing a campaign

  1. Open the final URL in a clean, logged-out browser and confirm the page works without an editor session.
  2. Inspect the raw HTML and confirm one canonical set of Open Graph values. Remove conflicting duplicate og:image tags unless you intentionally use the protocol’s multiple-image behavior.
  3. Fetch the image directly and verify its dimensions, file type, and response status.
  4. Run the URL through a preview checker. Record what it reports, including whether it fetched the page or image successfully.
  5. Share a low-risk test link. Compare the result with the checker, while recognizing that a checker cannot guarantee behavior in every TikTok version or region.

When an API integration is a different project

If your goal is to let users post videos or other content to TikTok, you are building an API client rather than an Open Graph generator. TikTok’s Content Sharing Guidelines say, “API Clients should display a preview of the to-be-posted content.” They also require express user consent before upload and restrict content from an unverified Direct Post API client to private viewing. These controls govern posting workflows and do not establish how an ordinary web link’s og:image will render.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a dependable screenshot of the published page for a card, documentation page, or review workflow, ScreenshotNeo returns a clean image or PDF from one GET request. It accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result.

Use the API documentation at https://screenshotneo.com/docs/ for all 63 options, including full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, device presets, custom viewport and retina scale, PDF controls, custom CSS or JavaScript, clicks, waits, blocking rules, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparency, resizing, TTL caching, signed image links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, usage reporting, and OpenAPI compatibility. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

cURL

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

Replace the example URL with the page you want to inspect. ScreenshotNeo’s Free plan includes 1,000 shots each month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to begin.

Cost and reliability considerations

  • Image hosting: Keep generated files on infrastructure you control, with a predictable HTTPS response and a retention policy that matches the lifetime of your shared links.
  • Rendering method: Server-rendered metadata is the safer default when a crawler may not execute JavaScript.
  • Testing: A checker validates what it can fetch at a point in time; it cannot promise TikTok’s final presentation.
  • Automation: Screenshot APIs are useful for visual QA and fallback assets, but a screenshot of a page is not the same thing as an og:image declaration. You still need to publish the metadata.

FAQ

Does creating a PNG automatically make TikTok use it?

No. The page must point to the file with Open Graph metadata, and TikTok may still vary its treatment by surface, version, or region.

Is 400 × 300 the required TikTok size?

No. That size appears as an illustrative Open Graph example. The reviewed material does not establish a universal TikTok image dimension.

Should I use TikTok’s Minis parameters for a normal website?

No. title, desc, and imageUrl are fields in the TikTok Minis sharing interface, not a replacement for Open Graph tags on an ordinary web page.

Can a preview checker force TikTok to refresh its cache?

No. It can show what its own fetcher sees. TikTok’s cache behavior and refresh timing are not specified consistently in the available documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a client-side framework to set og:image?

You can, but a crawler that does not execute JavaScript may never see the tag. Emit the metadata in the initial server response whenever possible.
