To convert HTML to JPG, render the page in a browser and save the rendered pixels as a JPEG. To convert a standalone SVG, rasterize it at the pixel dimensions you want, then encode that raster as JPEG. Use a browser screenshot when you need the HTML page’s layout, CSS, fonts, images, or JavaScript; use a vector renderer for SVG artwork.
Choose the right conversion method

HTML describes a document, not a fixed image. A browser must lay it out and render it before it can be captured as JPG. SVG is vector artwork, so it must be rendered onto a pixel grid before it can be saved in a raster format.
Convert a webpage or HTML page to JPG with Playwright
Playwright can save a page screenshot in JPEG format. The following Node.js example opens a URL and captures the visible browser viewport:

Choose what to capture
- Viewport: the visible browser area. This is suitable for a page preview or a specific screen state.
- Full page: the entire scrollable page. Set
fullPage: truein the screenshot options. Playwright describes this as a screenshot of the full scrollable page, as if it were a very tall screen. Very long pages can produce large images. - Element: capture a specific component rather than the whole page. Locate it with a selector and use the locator screenshot API, for example

Adjust quality and output scale
Playwright’s JPEG quality setting runs from 0 to 100; its documented default is 80. Higher settings generally preserve more detail at the cost of larger files. For text, interface screenshots, or fine graphics, inspect the result at its intended display size and raise the quality if compression artifacts are noticeable. The documented default is an API default, not a recommendation for every image. See the Playwright Python Page API for the published quality range and default.
Screenshot scale can be based on CSS pixels or device pixels. CSS-pixel output gives one image pixel per CSS pixel; device-pixel output can create a larger image on a high-density setting. Choose the scale based on where the JPG will be displayed or printed. The viewport controls layout dimensions; scale controls raster output density. Wait for the page to be ready
Navigation completing does not always mean every visual element is ready. A page may load images lazily, render content after JavaScript runs, or update after a user interaction. If the result is missing content, wait for a page-specific selector or add a deliberate delay before capturing. Network-idle waiting can help on pages that settle after requests finish, but pages with persistent network activity may never reach that state. Use a condition appropriate to the site rather than assuming one wait strategy fits all pages.

Convert a local HTML file or HTML string
The same principle applies to local HTML: a browser has to render it. For a simple local file, open it in a browser and use the browser’s screenshot or automation facilities. In an automated application, Browsershot provides URL and HTML input rendered through Puppeteer and headless Chrome. Its available output formats and configuration depend on the installed version, so check the Browsershot project documentation before copying package-specific code into a production workflow.
For a local document, account for assets and environment differences:
- Relative image, stylesheet, and font paths must resolve from the document’s location or be converted to valid URLs.
- Remote assets require a network connection and may fail, redirect, or load differently from local assets.
- JavaScript-dependent layouts need time to execute before capture.
- Fonts unavailable on the machine running headless Chrome may change line breaks and page height.
- Set the viewport explicitly if responsive layout or exact output dimensions matter.
If you need an exact output size, set the browser viewport deliberately and check the resulting image dimensions. A full-page capture’s height depends on the rendered document, so it may not match a preset canvas height.

Convert SVG to JPG with Inkscape and ImageMagick
For a standalone SVG, first render it at the required dimensions, then convert that raster image to JPEG. Inkscape’s command-line documentation shows an SVG-to-PNG export followed by ImageMagick encoding to JPG. One form of the pipeline is:

magick artwork.png artwork.jpgConfirm the command-line options supported by your installed Inkscape release: the cited command-line reference is an older wiki page. The Inkscape command-line documentation and ImageMagick conversion documentation describe the relevant workflow. ImageMagick can also select an output format from a filename extension, but the SVG still needs to be rasterized before it can become JPG.
Set SVG dimensions before rasterizing
Choose the intended width and height at export time. The SVG’s vector paths can be rendered cleanly at a selected size; enlarging a JPG afterward cannot restore detail that was not present in the original raster. If the SVG has a transparent background, decide what background color should appear in the JPEG before converting. JPEG does not retain alpha transparency.

Handle transparency and choose the right output
JPG has no transparent pixels. If the source HTML or SVG has transparency, the JPEG export must display a background instead. Playwright’s omit-background option does not apply to JPEG. Use PNG or another format that supports alpha if transparency must remain intact; the Playwright screenshot documentation describes this format limitation.
Use JPG when broad compatibility and a compressed photographic or page image are priorities. Use PNG when crisp text, sharp graphic edges, or transparent pixels matter more than keeping the file small. Always inspect the saved result: JPEG compression can introduce artifacts around text and high-contrast edges.

Troubleshoot conversion problems
The JPG is blank or missing content
- Likely cause: the capture ran before the page finished rendering, a required selector was absent, or the content needs a user action.
- Fix: wait for a visible page-specific element, allow the relevant JavaScript to run, or perform the required interaction before capture.
The page layout differs from the browser
- Likely cause: a different viewport, device scale, missing font, or unavailable asset changed the rendering.
- Fix: set the intended viewport and scale, verify that fonts and images load in the capture environment, and use the same responsive dimensions as the target display.
Full-page capture is unexpectedly tall or large
- Likely cause: full-page capture includes all scrollable content, including long feeds or expanded sections.
- Fix: use a viewport or element capture when only one screen or component is needed, or inspect the page height before saving a full-page image.
The SVG looks soft or has the wrong background
- Likely cause: it was rasterized at too small a size, or its transparency was not replaced with the intended background for JPEG.
- Fix: export at the final pixel dimensions and composite against the desired background before encoding as JPG. Use PNG if transparency must remain.
The conversion command fails
- Likely cause: Inkscape or ImageMagick is not installed, the command syntax differs by installed version, or the input/output path is wrong.
- Fix: verify the installed commands and their version-specific help, confirm paths and file permissions, and consult the linked Inkscape and ImageMagick documentation.
Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
Browser rendering is necessary when the output must reflect CSS layout, web fonts, images, or JavaScript. The tradeoff is that each capture depends on page loading and rendering; external assets, slow scripts, consent overlays, and dynamic content can affect what appears. A fixed viewport and a meaningful readiness condition improve consistency, but they cannot guarantee that a changing third-party page will render identically on every run.
For repeatable automation, decide whether the job needs a viewport, full page, or a particular element; pin the viewport and output scale; and check that the saved file exists and has plausible dimensions. Batch workloads also need deliberate handling for navigation failures and timeouts. The cited documentation does not establish a universal speed or cost comparison among Playwright, Browsershot, Inkscape, and ImageMagick, so choose based on input type, fidelity requirements, and the environment you can maintain.
