Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhen a link preview is missing an image, showing an old title, or differing between platforms, start with the HTML the server actually returns—not the page as it looks in your browser. Check the Open Graph tags in the initial <head>, verify that the canonical and image URLs are publicly fetchable, then use the target platform’s inspector to see what it parsed and request a fresh scrape.
What Open Graph metadata controls
The Open Graph protocol lets a web page become a rich object in a social graph. Its four required properties are og:title, og:type, og:image, and og:url. Put them in the document’s <head>. The title and image supply the core preview content; the URL identifies the page represented by the object.
A minimal example, with values replaced for your page, looks like this:
<head>
<title>A Guide to Example Topic</title>
<meta property="og:title" content="A Guide to Example Topic">
<meta property="og:type" content="article">
<meta property="og:url" content="https://example.com/guides/example-topic">
<meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/images/example-topic.jpg">
<meta property="og:description" content="A concise summary of the guide.">
</head>
Use absolute HTTP or HTTPS URLs for og:url and og:image. The former should identify the canonical page; the latter should identify the image the platform should fetch. If you share a URL that redirects or has tracking parameters, check that it resolves to the same page identity you intended.

Debug the preview in a reliable order
1. Inspect the initial server response
View the page source or fetch the HTML with an HTTP client. Search the response for og:title, og:type, og:url, and og:image. Confirm there is one deliberate value for each and that the tags are inside <head>. Do not rely only on the browser’s rendered DOM: a single-page app may add metadata after JavaScript runs, while a crawler may parse the HTML response before those scripts execute.
For a quick command-line check, use curl and inspect the returned source:
curl -L -sS https://example.com/guides/example-topic
The command follows redirects and prints the response body. If the response is very large, save it and search the file for the property names. Also inspect the final URL and response status: a redirect to a login page, an error page, or a different canonical URL can explain why a scraper sees unexpected content.

2. Check the required tags and canonical identity
Compare the shared URL with og:url and your page’s canonical link. They should consistently identify the same content. A tag that points at the homepage or at another version of the article can cause a platform to associate the preview with the wrong object or cache identity.
Look for accidental duplicates, empty content values, malformed quotes, and tags placed outside the head. When templates generate metadata, inspect the rendered response for an actual affected URL; a correct template is not proof that every route receives correct values.
3. Add optional controls when they answer a real need
Optional fields provide more control over the card. og:description supplies a summary, og:site_name identifies the site, and og:locale can express the content locale. Image structured properties can specify details including a secure image URL, MIME type, width, or height. Use valid values that describe the image actually served; optional tags do not compensate for an inaccessible or incorrect image URL.

4. Test the image and page as a crawler must fetch them
Open the exact image URL and canonical URL without being logged in. Check that they do not depend on a session, fail after a redirect, or expire because of a short-lived query string. Review robots restrictions, hotlink protection, server rules, and CDN behavior that might treat a crawler differently from your own browser.
A browser displaying an image does not establish that a social scraper receives it. The crawler may encounter a different redirect, a blocked request, an unexpected response type, or an image size that the target platform does not accept. Check the image’s response status and content type, and consult the relevant platform’s current image requirements rather than assuming one platform’s limits apply to all.
5. Inspect the result on the target platform
Use the platform’s own debugger or inspector for the service where the preview is wrong. Facebook’s Object/Sharing Debugger and the applicable LinkedIn, X, or other platform inspector can show the values parsed from a scrape and may let you trigger or observe a refresh. Official inspectors are authoritative for that platform’s interpretation; a third-party side-by-side preview can be useful for comparison but should not replace the platform’s own result.

6. Compare services before changing more code
Record the shared URL, parsed title, description, image, crop, and scrape time for each service. If the initial HTML is correct but only one service differs, suspect that service’s parsing, fallback, or cached scrape before rewriting valid metadata. Platforms can make different choices about images, fallbacks, and cache behavior even when the same page is served.
7. Make a small change, purge site caches, and scrape again
After correcting the response, clear any relevant site or CDN cache, then request a fresh scrape with the target platform’s inspector. Change one thing at a time where possible, so you can tell whether the cause was the HTML, the image delivery, or the cached preview. Check the new scrape before publishing another share. An already-published post may retain preview data fetched earlier, so a successful refresh of the URL does not necessarily rewrite every existing post.
Why the preview is wrong: symptoms and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| No preview or no image | Required tags are absent or malformed; the image cannot be fetched; or the crawler gets a blocked or unexpected response. | Inspect the initial HTML, confirm og:image is an absolute URL, and test the image response without authentication. Then run the platform inspector. |
| Old title or description | The service is showing a cached scrape, or a stale site/CDN response still contains old tags. | Check the current server response first, clear site caches, and request a refresh in the target platform’s tool. |
| Wrong page’s preview | og:url identifies a different canonical page, or the shared URL redirects unexpectedly. |
Compare the shared URL, final redirect target, canonical link, and og:url; align them with the intended page identity. |
| Browser is correct, scraper is not | Metadata is inserted only after client-side JavaScript, or crawler requests receive different content. | Confirm the tags exist in the initial server response and check access controls, redirects, and bot-specific delivery. |
| Image appears on one service but not another | Platforms differ in image handling, requirements, fallback behavior, and cache state. | Inspect the image and parsed values with each platform’s own tool; verify requirements for the service that fails. |
| One platform shows a different card format | Platform-specific metadata or fallback behavior differs. | Check whether the target platform documents card tags of its own, including X card tags, and add them where appropriate. |
Use platform-specific tags where needed
Open Graph is a useful common baseline, not a promise that every service renders an identical card. In particular, if X’s result differs from another consumer, check whether the page has the platform-specific card metadata X documents and how its current inspector parses the page. Avoid assuming that the presence of Open Graph tags guarantees a particular crop, title fallback, or description across all services.

When choosing a validator, compare what it actually does: which platforms it covers, whether it exposes parsed tags, whether it can request cache refreshes, and whether it checks image dimensions, MIME type, and accessibility. Also consider whether it renders JavaScript and what its export and privacy/data-retention terms are. A preview mockup is not proof that the official crawler will fetch the same response.
Capture evidence of what a page looks like
If metadata appears in the response but you need to document the browser-rendered page or compare a visual result, a screenshot can help—but it does not replace inspection of the raw HTML or the platform’s own parsed scrape. Browser capture is especially relevant when a page’s visible content depends on JavaScript; use it to investigate visual rendering, then separately verify the crawler-visible tags.
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It can capture a page as an image or PDF, but a screenshot alone cannot confirm what a social platform cached or parsed.
Or skip the browser setup
To capture a page directly, make one GET request. Replace the example URL with the page you want to inspect and provide your API key. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and response details.
