This captures what Chrome renders—not the HTML source code. If you mean a local .html file, the extension may also need permission to access file URLs.
What “HTML to PNG” means in Chrome
A Chrome screenshot extension turns the rendered appearance of a page into an image. It does not ordinarily convert the underlying HTML markup into a PNG source-code diagram. Chrome first lays out the HTML, CSS, images, and other page content; the extension captures the visible result.
The same distinction matters for local files. A webpage opened at an address such as https://example.com is different from a file opened from your computer, such as file:///.../page.html. Some extensions can capture local HTML files only after you enable their separate file-access permission.
Convert a webpage to PNG with an extension
- Open the page in Chrome. Navigate to the webpage and wait for the content you need to appear. If the page loads images or other elements as you scroll, check that those areas have loaded before capturing.
- Open the screenshot extension. Click its toolbar icon. If you do not see it, open Chrome’s Extensions menu and select the extension; you can pin it to the toolbar for easier access.
- Choose the capture area. Select Visible area for what is currently on screen, or Full page for the full scrolling document. Page to Image lists both capture modes and says its full-page mode scrolls through and combines page sections. See its Chrome Web Store listing.
- Select PNG. Choose PNG when crisp text, interface elements, diagrams, or lossless image detail matter. Page to Image also offers JPEG, which it describes as a smaller-file option for photos, with adjustable quality.
- Capture and save. Follow the extension’s prompt to create the image. Page to Image says its generated image is saved to Downloads; other extensions may present a preview or use a different save flow.
Before using the PNG elsewhere, open it from the download location and check the top, bottom, and edges. That catches clipped content or a capture mode that did not include the whole page.

Capture a local .html file
Open the file in Chrome, then use an extension that explicitly supports local-file capture. If Chrome blocks the extension from reading the page, enable the extension’s file access permission: open Extensions > Manage extensions, select the relevant extension’s Details, and turn on Allow access to file URLs. The wording and availability can vary by Chrome version and extension.
GoFullScreenshot’s Chrome Web Store listing says its full-page, visible-area, and selection capture modes work on directly opened local HTML files after this setting is enabled. Do not assume another extension supports the same workflow or permission. Check the GoFullScreenshot listing.
If the local page references images, stylesheets, or scripts using relative paths, confirm those resources load in Chrome before capture. A screenshot can only show the rendering Chrome actually produced; a missing image or broken style remains missing or broken in the PNG.
Choose the right capture mode and format
| Need | Choose | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Only the part currently on screen | Visible-area capture | Captures the viewport rather than the entire scrolling page. Page to Image lists this mode. |
| A long webpage | Full-page capture | The extension may scroll and combine sections. Page to Image describes this behavior; very tall captures can run into image or canvas limits. |
| Sharp text, interface details, or diagrams | PNG | Page to Image recommends PNG for crisp text and lossless detail. |
| Photos where smaller output matters | JPEG | Page to Image describes JPEG as smaller, with adjustable quality; it is not lossless. |
| A local .html file | An extension that supports local capture | File URL access may need to be enabled separately. GoFullScreenshot documents this requirement for its local-file workflow. |
| A self-contained archive of a tab and its resources | MHTML, not PNG | Chrome’s pageCapture extension API saves a tab as MHTML, an archive format—not as a PNG image. Chrome for Developers: pageCapture API. |
Export choices are extension-specific. For example, the GoFullPage listing includes PNG, JPG, and PDF export; those options should not be assumed to exist in another extension. See the GoFullPage listing.

What can prevent a successful capture?
Protected Chrome pages
Extensions cannot necessarily capture every page. Page to Image says Chrome blocks capture of protected pages such as Chrome settings and the Chrome Web Store. Use an ordinary website tab instead; this is a browser restriction, not a PNG-format problem.
Very long pages
A full-page image has to fit the browser’s image or canvas limits. GoFullScreenshot says it shows an error when it cannot safely create an image. If that happens, try visible-area captures in sections or use a shorter page. Its listing describes the size limitation.

Content that has not loaded
If an image, chart, or other element is absent from the screenshot, first wait for it to load in the page itself and retry. Some sites load content only when its section enters the viewport, so scroll to that section before starting a full-page capture if necessary.
Local-file access is off
If the extension refuses to run on a file:// page, check its Details page in Chrome’s extension settings and enable Allow access to file URLs if the extension supports local-file capture. Enabling the setting does not add local-file support to extensions that do not offer it.

Before installing an extension, compare the permissions it requests, its stated handling of page content, support for local files, capture modes, and export formats. A screenshot extension can interact with the pages you ask it to capture, so review the listing and the permission prompts rather than treating all extensions as interchangeable.
Page to Image’s listing says captures are processed locally. That is the publisher’s statement, not an independent verification. Its listing also describes its capture modes and PNG/JPEG options; verify current details in the listing before relying on them. Feature, permission, and privacy claims can change over time.

If you need repeatable captures in a script or service rather than a manual browser extension, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its clean-shot options accept consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with the outcome identified in response headers. AI agents can use its MCP server tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
For a PNG, pass the output format parameter shown in the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for your request. This cURL example captures the rendered Stripe page; the documented simple request pattern is:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
That example saves the response as shot.webp. Replace the target URL with the page you need and use the documentation’s format option when you need PNG specifically. ScreenshotNeo also supports full-page captures, CSS-selector element capture, viewport and device settings, PDF options, custom CSS and JavaScript, waiting rules, request blocking, custom headers and cookies, caching, signed image links, asynchronous jobs, and bulk capture. Its API accepts parameter names used by other screenshot APIs to ease migration.

Troubleshooting checklist
- The extension icon is missing: open Chrome’s Extensions menu, select the installed extension, and pin it to the toolbar if desired.
- The capture only includes part of a long page: choose Full page rather than Visible area. If full-page capture fails due to size, capture sections separately.
- The PNG is blank or missing page elements: return to the tab, wait for the elements to render, scroll to lazy-loaded sections, and capture again.
- A local file cannot be captured: confirm the extension supports local files and enable Allow access to file URLs in that extension’s Details page.
- Chrome refuses capture on an internal page: try an ordinary website; Chrome restricts extension captures on protected pages.
- You expected a PNG from
pageCapture: that API produces MHTML. Use a screenshot extension for a browser-rendered image, or an image-capable screenshot service for automated capture.
FAQ
Does a Chrome extension convert HTML code itself to PNG?
It captures the page as Chrome renders it. It does not ordinarily draw the raw markup as text in the image.
Can I capture a local HTML file?
Yes, with an extension that supports local-file capture. It may require Allow access to file URLs in Chrome’s extension settings.
