For a normal, searchable document, open the page, press Ctrl+P (Windows/Linux) or Command+P (Mac), choose Save as PDF, review the preview, and save. If you need the page’s visual appearance—including content below the fold—use Edge’s Screenshot > Capture full page or Firefox’s Take Screenshot > Save full page. For repeatable jobs, Chrome Headless can write either an image or a PDF from the command line.
Choose the right kind of capture
A print-to-PDF file is paginated and usually contains selectable text. A full-page screenshot preserves the visual layout as one long image; you can print that image to PDF when appearance matters more than text selection.

Interactive elements can render differently in print and screen captures. Always inspect the preview or resulting file, especially for authenticated, animated, or lazy-loaded pages.
Save a webpage as a PDF in Google Chrome
- Open the complete webpage and wait for images, charts, and other lazy-loaded content to appear.
- Press Ctrl+P on Windows/Linux or Command+P on macOS. You can also open Chrome’s Print command from the browser menu.
- In the destination list, select Save as PDF.
- Check the preview. Adjust paper size, orientation, scale, margins, background graphics, and page range when those controls are available.
- Click Save, choose a filename and folder, and open the saved PDF to verify the last page and any important images.
Chrome’s print route creates a document rendering, not a pixel-for-pixel screenshot. CSS print rules may hide navigation, change colors, or reflow columns. If the page is extremely long, reducing scale, changing orientation, or selecting a page range can make the result easier to read.

Capture a full-page result in Microsoft Edge
Full-page image
- Open the webpage.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+S, or open Edge’s Screenshot feature.
- Choose Capture full page. Use an area selection instead when only part of the page is needed.
- Review the overlay. Edge supports pen or touch markup, then lets you copy or save the capture.
Capture full page includes content that extends below the visible screen. The result is an image; to make a PDF, open the saved image and print it using your operating system’s PDF printer.

Open Settings and more > Print, or press Ctrl+P (Windows) or Command+P (macOS). Select the available PDF destination, check the preview, set layout and margins, and save. This produces a paginated print rendering rather than Edge’s tall screenshot.

- Right-click an empty area of the page and choose Take Screenshot, or press Ctrl+Shift+S (Windows/Linux) or Command+Shift+S (macOS).
- Choose Save full page for the entire document. Save visible captures only the current viewport; Firefox also offers a selected region and an automatically detected page part.
- Save the image. To turn it into a PDF, open the image and print it to a PDF destination.

Open Firefox’s Print command, select Save to PDF in the Destination menu, review the shown preview, and save. Firefox’s print preview is best when you need selectable text and normal page breaks.

Use Firefox Developer Tools when the menu command is unavailable
Open Developer Tools, enable the screenshot toolbox button, and use it to take a full-page screenshot. Firefox includes content outside the current window bounds. This is useful in a developer workflow or when a site’s context menu intercepts right-clicks. Print the resulting image to PDF if a PDF file is required.

google-chrome --headless --print-to-pdf=page.pdf --timeout=10000 https://example.com--screenshot writes an image, --print-to-pdf writes a PDF, and --timeout=<milliseconds> controls how long Headless waits before capture. Increase the timeout for slow pages, but remember that a timeout does not guarantee that content loaded only after a user scroll will appear. Sites that require a login, special headers, or client-side interaction may need a browser automation setup that supplies those conditions before invoking capture.
Make a visual screenshot into a readable PDF
- Capture the full page as an image with Edge or Firefox.
- Open the image in your operating system’s image viewer.
- Choose Print and select the system PDF printer (for example, Microsoft Print to PDF or a PDF destination in the print dialog).
- Set paper size, orientation, fit, and margins. A tall image may be split across many pages; choose a larger paper size or a lower scale when legibility permits.
- Save and inspect several pages, including the final page, for clipping or unexpected blank areas.
This workflow preserves the screenshot’s appearance but does not create selectable webpage text. Use browser print preview when text search, copying, and normal pagination are more important.

Prepare pages that load dynamically
- Lazy images: scroll through the page once or wait until placeholders become real images before printing or capturing.
- Animations and carousels: pause them or capture after the desired frame is visible; otherwise the saved state can vary between runs.
- Cookie and consent dialogs: dismiss them before capture if they obscure content. A dialog accepted in one browser profile may reappear in another.
- Authentication: capture while signed in, and avoid exposing passwords, session tokens, or private data in shared files.
- Scroll-triggered content: a print preview and a screenshot tool can trigger different loading behavior. Compare the preview with the live page before relying on the file.
- Very long pages: use print scale, orientation, margins, or page ranges for a readable PDF rather than forcing one tiny page.
Common problems and fixes
- Images or sections are missing: wait for lazy content, reload, scroll through the page, then reopen print preview. In Headless mode, raise
--timeout. - The PDF looks unlike the screen: print rendering follows print CSS and may remove backgrounds or reflow columns. Use a full-page screenshot when visual fidelity is the priority.
- Only the visible viewport was captured: choose Capture full page in Edge or Save full page in Firefox, not the visible/area option.
- The result is unreadably tall: print the image with a suitable paper size, lower the scale moderately, or use the browser’s paginated PDF output.
- A page is blank or times out in automation: confirm the URL is reachable from the machine running Chrome, allow more time, and check whether a bot check, login wall, or network dependency blocks rendering.
- Headers or footers are unwanted: turn off browser print headers and footers when that control is present, then inspect the preview again.
- A private page was shared accidentally: treat screenshots and PDFs as data exports. Remove sensitive files and regenerate after signing out or redacting content.
