Your browser may save the representation supplied by the site, depending on the page, image URL and browser. To obtain a JPG or PNG, download the original WebP and convert it with an image editor or a real converter—do not merely rename the file extension.
Why a downloaded image is WebP
WebP is an image format designed for fast transfer over the web. RFC 9649 describes it as “optimized for fast image transfer over the network (for example, for websites).” Sites use WebP because it can deliver comparable visual quality in fewer bytes than some older formats. Google’s documentation reports that WebP lossless images are 26% smaller than PNGs, while WebP lossy images are 25–34% smaller than comparable JPEG images at equivalent SSIM quality. Those are Google’s documented comparisons, not a guarantee for every image.
A website can provide a WebP file directly, or an image-delivery system can choose WebP when your browser supports it. Responsive image markup, a content-delivery network, URL parameters and server-side content negotiation can all affect which representation you receive. When you use “Save image as,” the browser may preserve that representation, but exact behavior varies by site, image URL and browser. The extension is therefore often an accurate clue to the bytes you downloaded, not evidence that your computer changed a JPG into WebP.
WebP is not automatically lower quality
WebP supports both lossy and lossless compression, plus transparency and animation. A lossy WebP may discard detail, just as a JPEG can; a lossless WebP can preserve pixel data while using a different compression method. You cannot determine the compression mode solely from the filename.

Check what you actually downloaded
- Inspect the filename and dimensions. A name ending in
.webpusually indicates WebP, but names can be misleading. - Open the file in an image viewer or editor. The program’s document or image-information panel should report the format, dimensions, color mode and whether transparency is present.
- Check the source URL when needed. Use the browser’s developer tools or open the image in a new tab. A URL ending in
.webpis a strong hint, but servers can return a different media type. - Keep the original. Make a copy before conversion so you can return to the highest-quality source you have.
How to get a JPG or PNG
Method 1: Look for an original or alternate download
Some pages offer a download button, a high-resolution link, or an original asset in addition to the optimized WebP. Open the image in a new tab and inspect nearby download controls. If the publisher provides a JPG or PNG, that source is preferable to converting a WebP because it avoids another encode. Do not bypass access controls or download material you do not have permission to use.
Method 2: Convert WebP with an image editor
- Open the
.webpfile in an editor that supports WebP. - Choose File > Save As, Export or the equivalent command.
- Select PNG when you need lossless output or transparency. Select JPEG/JPG for broad compatibility with photographic images.
- For JPEG, set a quality level appropriate to your workflow and inspect the result at 100% zoom.
- Save to a new filename, then verify that the exported file opens and has the expected dimensions.
Menu names and available quality controls differ by application. If an editor cannot open WebP, update it or use a trusted converter that documents its supported formats.
Method 3: Convert from the command line with Google’s WebP tools
Google’s WebP documentation demonstrates decoding WebP to PNG with dwebp:
dwebp image.webp -o image.png
This command decodes the input and writes genuine PNG data; it does not just change the suffix. Follow the current installation and option instructions in Google’s WebP documentation and Getting Started guide. For JPEG output, use an image editor or a converter that explicitly encodes JPEG, then check its quality and metadata options.

Method 4: Use a browser-based converter carefully
An online converter can be convenient when you cannot install software, but uploading an image sends it to a third party. Avoid this route for confidential, personal or copyrighted material unless the service’s terms and handling meet your requirements. Download the converted file, scan it with your normal security tools, and retain the original WebP.
JPG or PNG: which should you choose?

Conversion does not improve an image by itself. Converting a lossy WebP to JPEG adds another lossy generation and may create block edges, ringing or softened text. Converting to PNG preserves the pixels produced by decoding, but it cannot recover pixels that were discarded when the source WebP was encoded. Use PNG because the destination workflow benefits from it, not as a repair tool.
Why renaming .webp to .jpg or .png fails
A filename extension is a label, not an encoder. Renaming photo.webp to photo.jpg leaves WebP bytes inside the file. Some programs may still identify the content correctly; others will reject it or display an error because the extension and file signature disagree. Decode the WebP and encode the result in the target format with an editor, dwebp for PNG, or another converter.
Preserve quality, transparency and metadata
- Start from the best source. If the page offers an original JPEG or PNG, use it instead of converting a smaller derivative.
- Inspect transparency. JPEG has no alpha channel. Transparent pixels must be composited against a background or exported to PNG (or another format that supports transparency).
- Be cautious with animation. A static conversion may export only one frame. If the WebP is animated, choose a tool that explicitly supports frame extraction or animation output.
- Expect metadata changes. Export tools may remove EXIF, color profiles, comments or orientation tags. Verify color management and orientation if the image is for print or archival use.
- Do not repeatedly re-encode. Keep the original WebP and make conversions from that original rather than from a previously converted JPEG.
Common problems and fixes
The converted file will not open
The conversion may have failed, the output may be incomplete, or the extension may have been changed without encoding. Run the converter again, confirm the command’s exit status and open the output in a second viewer. Check that the destination folder is writable and that the disk has space.

The image has a black or solid background
The source may contain transparency, while JPEG does not. Export as PNG to retain alpha, or deliberately composite the image onto a chosen background before saving JPEG.
The JPEG looks worse than the WebP
You may have converted a lossy WebP to another lossy format or selected a low JPEG quality setting. Export once from the original WebP at a higher quality, compare at 100% zoom, and keep the WebP when the receiving application accepts it.
Only the first frame of an animation appears
Static PNG or JPEG output represents one frame. Use an animation-capable workflow if you need all frames, or keep the animated WebP.
The website still downloads WebP
The site is likely serving WebP intentionally through its image URL or delivery system. Saving again usually retrieves the same representation. Find an explicitly offered original, or download the WebP and convert it locally.

The image is blank, blocked or replaced by a bot check
The page may require scripts, consent handling or a valid session. Do not assume a blank capture is a usable image; use the site’s normal download control or an authorized capture workflow.

Practical decision checklist
- Need the publisher’s untouched asset? Find and download its offered original.
- Need a file that accepts transparency? Use PNG, provided the source contains the required pixels.
- Need a photo for a system that expects JPG? Convert once from the original and choose an appropriate quality setting.
- Need an animated asset? Keep WebP or use a workflow that explicitly preserves animation.
- Need a webpage rendering rather than its asset? Use an authorized screenshot method and verify that consent dialogs, lazy content and bot checks have not produced a misleading result.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is WebP better than JPG or PNG?
None is universally better. WebP is often efficient for web delivery, JPEG suits many photographs and PNG suits transparency or precise graphics; compatibility and the source’s compression matter.
Can I convert WebP back to the original JPG?
Only if the original JPG is available elsewhere. Conversion can create a new JPEG, but it cannot recover detail discarded when a lossy WebP was made.
Will converting WebP to PNG improve quality?
No. PNG can preserve the decoded pixels and transparency, but it cannot restore detail absent from the WebP.
