No. Facebook does not currently notify someone when you screenshot a normal post. The same no-alert behavior is generally documented for ordinary photos, profile pages, Reels, and Stories. The important exception is a disappearing message in an end-to-end encrypted Messenger chat: Messenger can notify participants when it detects a screenshot.
That distinction matters because “Facebook screenshot notifications” is not one universal setting. The result depends on the content type, whether the message is set to disappear, and the version or rollout of Meta’s apps.

Meta Messenger product manager Timothy Buck described the exception in a January 27, 2022 announcement: “now we’re introducing a new notification when we detect that someone screenshots a disappearing message.” Meta also said this is the same feature offered in Messenger’s vanish mode.
“Potentially” is deliberate. The feature depends on detection by the app and on the conversation actually using disappearing messages. It is not a promise that every capture, recording method, or future app version will be detected.

What happens when you screenshot a normal Facebook post?
For a standard post in the Facebook app or website, Facebook does not send the post owner a screenshot alert. There is no notification saying who captured it, when they did so, or how many times.
This applies whether the post contains text, a link preview, a photo, or a video thumbnail. It also applies when the post is viewed from a profile, feed, group, or page, provided it is an ordinary post rather than a disappearing Messenger message.
Does the poster see your name?
No documented Facebook notification identifies the person who took the screenshot. Normal engagement signals—such as a reaction, comment, share, or view count where Facebook provides one—are separate from screenshot activity.
Can the poster tell that you saved it?
A screenshot and Facebook’s own Save feature are different actions. A screenshot is stored on your device and does not create a documented alert. If you use Facebook’s built-in save function, the item may appear in your private Saved area, but that is not a screenshot notification to the poster.

Current guidance likewise describes no screenshot notification for ordinary Facebook photos, profile pages, Reels, or Stories. The absence of an alert does not make the material private: the other person may still be able to copy, download, photograph, or redistribute what appears on screen.

Facebook Stories
Stories expire from the normal Story display after their publishing period, but a screenshot of a Story is not currently described as notifying its creator. Story-view information and screenshot information are separate; seeing that someone viewed a Story does not mean Facebook has told the creator about a screenshot.
Profiles and public pages
Opening or capturing a profile or public page does not produce a documented screenshot warning. Privacy controls can restrict who sees posts or profile details, but they do not turn on a general screenshot-alert system.
Reels and video content
Capturing a frame from a Reel is treated like capturing other ordinary Facebook content for notification purposes. Copyright, licensing, and the creator’s terms can still restrict how you reuse the recording even when no technical alert appears.

The documented exception concerns disappearing messages in Messenger’s end-to-end encrypted chats. When that mode is enabled, Meta says Messenger can notify participants if it detects a screenshot of a disappearing message. Meta’s announcement connects the behavior with Messenger’s vanish mode.
What “disappearing” changes
A disappearing message is configured to vanish after the conversation’s selected period or after it is viewed, depending on the chat’s settings. The screenshot alert is associated with that temporary-message feature, not with every end-to-end encrypted message and not with every Messenger conversation.

Ordinary Messenger chats
In a normal, non-disappearing conversation, the documented Facebook behavior is no screenshot alert. Switching to end-to-end encryption by itself should not be confused with enabling disappearing messages; check the chat’s current disappearing-message setting.
What the alert does—and does not—prove
- It indicates that Messenger detected a screenshot event under the feature’s supported conditions.
- It does not guarantee detection of every screenshot, screen recording, second-camera photograph, or modified client.
- It does not prevent someone from preserving or sharing the content.
- It does not apply retroactively to ordinary posts, Stories, or standard chats.
Why reports can conflict
People often remember older behavior, a different Meta app, or a staged feature rollout. Meta can change notification behavior through updates, experiments, and regional deployment. The documented disappearing-message announcement establishes that exception, while current technology guidance describes ordinary Facebook content as non-notifying.
If your interface differs, check the specific Messenger conversation rather than relying on a screenshot-warning claim made for another product or date. Look for the chat’s disappearing-message controls and read the notice shown when that mode is enabled.
What Facebook cannot tell you from a screenshot
For ordinary Facebook content, the owner cannot use a standard Facebook notification to see that you captured the screen. They may still learn that you interacted in other ways, such as viewing a Story where viewer lists are available, reacting, commenting, or sharing.
A screenshot can also expose information that the original poster expected to remain within a limited audience. Before forwarding one, consider names, profile photos, private messages, location details, and other personal data visible in the frame. “No notification” is not the same as permission to republish.

How to check the setting before capturing a Messenger message
- Open the relevant Messenger conversation.
- Identify whether the chat is using end-to-end encryption and whether disappearing messages are enabled.
- Open the conversation’s information or privacy controls and read the current disappearing-message status.
- If the message is set to disappear, assume Messenger may notify participants when it detects a screenshot.
- If it is an ordinary message, do not assume a screenshot alert exists; Meta’s documented exception is tied to disappearing messages.
Labels and menus can vary by app version and rollout. Do not treat a missing label as proof that a future version cannot change the behavior.

Common misunderstandings and troubleshooting
“I saw a notification after taking a screenshot.”
Check what you captured. It may have been a disappearing Messenger message rather than a Facebook post, Story, or ordinary chat. Also distinguish a notification about a message, reaction, or Story view from a screenshot alert.

“I did not get an alert in a disappearing chat.”
Detection is not guaranteed. Confirm that disappearing messages were enabled, that both participants are using supported app versions, and that you captured the message inside the encrypted Messenger chat. A second device, camera, or screen-recording method may not produce the same event.
“The menu looks different from the instructions.”
Meta changes labels and rolls features out gradually. Update Messenger, reopen the conversation’s privacy settings, and rely on the setting shown for that specific chat instead of a generic screenshot guide.
Bottom line
Screenshotting a normal Facebook post, photo, profile, Reel, or Story does not currently notify the owner. Ordinary Messenger chats also do not have the documented alert. The exception is disappearing messages in end-to-end encrypted Messenger chats, where Meta says it can notify participants when a screenshot is detected. Because app behavior can change, check the conversation’s current disappearing-message setting and remember that no alert does not make copied content private.

Does Facebook notify someone if I screenshot a post in a private group?
There is no documented screenshot alert for an ordinary group post. Group privacy controls determine who can view the post, not whether Facebook reports screenshots.
Can Facebook detect a screenshot taken with another phone?
