You can capture a website at mobile dimensions from a desktop without a phone. In Chrome, use DevTools Device Mode and choose either Capture screenshot for the visible viewport or Capture a full size screenshot for the whole page. Safari users can preview a mobile-sized layout in Responsive Design Mode. Both are simulations, not proof of how a particular phone will render or behave.
Choose the right kind of mobile screenshot
“Mobile screenshot” can mean two different capture areas: the part of the page currently visible inside a simulated phone viewport, or the entire page from top to bottom. Decide which you need before capturing. A viewport image is useful for checking a specific screen or sharing a first impression; a full-page image includes content below the fold.
Also decide whether you need a visual preview or a real-device test. Desktop browser tools can help inspect responsive layouts, but they do not reproduce every aspect of a phone, such as touch interaction, browser chrome, or device-specific behavior.
Capture a mobile website screenshot in Chrome
Chrome DevTools Device Mode lets you set a mobile viewport and capture either the visible area or a full-size page image. The menu labels and workflow below follow Google’s Device Mode documentation.

- Open the page in Chrome. Navigate to the website you want to capture. Device Mode is for pages open in the desktop browser, including a page served from a local development environment.
- Open DevTools. Use Chrome’s menu at ⋮ > More tools > Developer tools, or the keyboard shortcut for DevTools on your operating system.
- Turn on the device toolbar. In DevTools, click the Toggle device toolbar button. The page appears in a responsive viewport.
- Set the viewport. Choose a device preset from the toolbar or select Responsive and enter the width and height you want. A preset is a convenient starting point; custom dimensions are useful when you need to match a particular layout breakpoint.
- Refresh if the page does not adapt. Some pages choose layout or content when first loaded. If the page still looks like its desktop version after changing the viewport, reload it with Device Mode active.
- Choose the capture area. Open the DevTools More options menu and select Capture screenshot for the currently visible viewport, or Capture a full size screenshot for the full page. Chrome downloads the resulting image.
To add a device frame to a device-specific capture, enable Show device frame before taking the screenshot. A frame can make an image suitable for a presentation, but it does not make the page rendering more like a real phone.
Viewport capture or full-page capture?
- Use Capture screenshot when you want the displayed mobile screen only. Scroll to the relevant section first if you want a particular portion of the page.
- Use Capture a full size screenshot when the image must show content extending below the viewport. This produces a taller page image, not a series of separate phone screens.
If you need to document several distinct states—such as a menu open and closed—capture each state separately. A single screenshot records only what is visible at the time of capture.
Capture a mobile-sized preview in Safari
On a Mac using Safari, Responsive Design Mode provides viewport presets, editable dimensions, and rotation controls. Apple describes the mode and its limitations in its Responsive Design Mode documentation.

- Enter Responsive Design Mode. Choose Develop > Enter Responsive Design Mode.
- Choose or edit a viewport. Select a preset or set the preview dimensions yourself. Rotate the preview to inspect a landscape layout.
- Capture the preview. Use macOS screenshot controls to save the visible Safari preview. This is a viewport image; do not mistake it for a full-page capture.
Apple cautions that presets approximate screen sizes rather than reproducing the exact layout, rendering, and behavior of a device. Address bars, on-screen keyboards, and device-specific form behavior can affect what a person sees. For a closer preview, Apple points to Simulator; for behavior that matters on actual hardware, test on a real device.

A hosted screenshot service can take a public URL and return an image at a chosen mobile size, which is useful when you do not want to open developer tools or need a repeatable capture workflow. Treat the result as a rendered snapshot at selected dimensions, not as a test of touch behavior or a guarantee of how every phone browser will display the page.
For a hosted website screenshot API, ScreenshotNeo is the first option to consider: it removes known consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and bills only clean shots. It also has an MCP server for AI agents and a free monthly plan.
| Method | How you set the mobile view | Capture scope and useful distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Chrome DevTools Device Mode | Choose a preset or set responsive dimensions. | Chrome documents both visible-viewport and full-size screenshot commands; it is a desktop simulation. |
| Safari Responsive Design Mode | Choose a preset, edit dimensions, or rotate the preview. | Useful for previewing in Safari; Apple says the preset is not an exact reproduction of device behavior. |
| ScreenshotNeo | Send a URL to its API; its screenshot options include device presets and custom viewports. | Returns a screenshot or PDF; its API includes options for full-page capture. Details: ScreenshotNeo documentation. |
| Tallpage | Enter a URL and select a mobile size on its service. | Tallpage says its output does not emulate mobile Safari, a particular iPhone model, touch events, mobile User-Agent behavior, or a high-density device screen: Tallpage’s service page. These are the service’s stated limitations, not independent test findings. |
Before sending a URL to a hosted service, consider whether the page is public and whether you are comfortable submitting it to that provider. The handling of private or access-controlled URLs is not established for every service; do not assume a tool can access such a page or that its data handling meets your requirements.

ScreenshotNeo takes a URL through one API request. This cURL example saves a WebP capture at a mobile viewport; change the URL or add options such as a device preset or full-page capture as described in the API documentation.

What a simulated mobile screenshot can and cannot tell you
Chrome describes Device Mode as an approximation of the mobile experience, not a browser running on a phone. Safari’s responsive presets likewise do not exactly reproduce device layout, rendering, or behavior. They are practical for checking how a page responds to dimensions, but a screenshot alone cannot establish that the site works correctly on a specific phone.
- For layout checks: inspect the relevant width and height, rotate the preview where supported, and capture the exact state you want to review.
- For Safari-specific questions: preview in Safari, then use Simulator or a real device when the distinction matters.
- For touch, browser UI, keyboard, or device-specific behavior: test on the relevant phone or simulator rather than treating a desktop capture as proof.
- For repeated or unattended captures: consider a hosted workflow, while checking its fidelity limits and URL privacy before submitting pages.
Troubleshooting common capture problems
The page still looks like desktop
Make sure the device toolbar is on and check the displayed viewport dimensions. Reload with Device Mode active if the site selected its layout on initial load. Some sites require a particular viewport width before their mobile layout appears.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The screenshot cuts off the page
You likely captured only the current viewport. In Chrome, reopen DevTools More options and select Capture a full size screenshot. In Safari, Responsive Design Mode is a preview; use an appropriate full-page capture method if you need the whole document.

The image looks different from a phone
That difference is expected: a desktop simulation is an approximation. Check the page on the target phone or in Simulator for browser-specific rendering, and test interactions directly for touch or keyboard behavior.
The page changes after capture or looks incomplete
Dynamic pages may load content after the initial render. Wait for the content you need to appear, then capture again. If you use a hosted service, check its documented wait controls and load behavior rather than assuming it captures after every page script has finished.
A hosted service cannot capture the page
Check that the URL is reachable to the service and that the page does not require access the service has not been configured to provide. For private pages, use a workflow whose access and data handling you have verified; service behavior for protected URLs should not be assumed.

Which method should you use?
- One-off capture from a desktop: use the browser already open. Chrome is the straightforward choice when you need both viewport and full-page screenshots.
- Safari layout preview: use Responsive Design Mode, with Simulator or actual hardware for questions where fidelity matters.
- URL-based, repeatable capture: evaluate a hosted screenshot tool. ScreenshotNeo is the recommended API option here for its cleanup of consent elements and billing only for clean shots; use browser or device testing when you need to verify real mobile behavior.
