To record a video that is playing on a webpage, use your browser’s screen-capture picker and choose the narrowest source that contains the video: the tab, a browser window, or the entire screen. A small JavaScript page using getDisplayMedia() and MediaRecorder can save the stream locally, but the browser and operating system must grant permission, audio support varies, and DRM-protected playback may appear black or refuse capture. Record only content you are authorized to retain.
Choose what the browser should capture
The capture surface determines both what appears in the file and what private information could leak into it. The picker shown by your browser and operating system may use different labels, but these are the usual choices:

Choose the tab when it contains everything the audience needs. Before opening the picker, close unrelated tabs, pause notifications, and remove personal information from the page.
A simple browser recorder
The following self-contained page asks the user to select a tab, window, or screen, records the resulting stream, and creates a download link. Start the process from a button click: browsers require a user gesture before granting display capture.

</script>Save this as an HTML file and open it in a browser that supports the APIs. Select the webpage containing the video, then play the video. Select “Stop recording” when finished and open the downloaded file. The code requests audio, but a browser may provide audio only for certain surfaces and operating systems; always make a short test first.
Why the code uses chunks
recorder.start(1000) asks for data roughly every second instead of waiting for one enormous in-memory object. A long recording can still consume substantial memory and disk space. Keep the page open until the download link appears, and do not revoke the object URL before downloading.
When to use an extension
Browser extensions can use an extension-specific capture surface such as Chrome’s tabCapture. That is useful when you are building a managed recorder that repeatedly captures tabs, but it still requires user permission and must follow the browser’s extension policies. For a one-off recording, the normal display-capture picker is simpler.

Permissions you must grant
There are usually two permission layers:
- Browser permission: the display-capture picker asks you to choose a tab, window, or screen. Canceling the picker, selecting a different source, or revoking the site’s permission changes what the page can record.
- Operating-system permission: some systems require the browser or recording application to be allowed to capture the screen. Check the system’s privacy controls for screen recording or screen capture; names and locations differ by OS version and organization policy.
If an employer-managed browser or computer disables screen capture, a web page cannot override that policy. Ask the administrator or use an authorized recording feature supplied by the video service.
Make sure sound is actually present
Picture and sound are separate parts of a display stream. Whether webpage audio is offered depends on the browser, operating system, selected surface, and sometimes the page. After recording 10–20 seconds, open the file in a player and verify both:
- the video is not frozen or black;
- the webpage’s audio is audible at the expected volume;
- your microphone was not accidentally included or omitted, depending on your purpose.
The example requests system audio but does not request a microphone. If you need narration, capture it with a separate, authorized audio workflow and confirm that your chosen browser supports mixing it with display audio.

Privacy and authorization checklist
- Record only a video you are permitted to copy, such as your own material, a permitted training session, or content for which the service provides a recording or download option.
- Close unrelated tabs and applications, hide account numbers and private messages, and silence desktop notifications.
- Choose a tab rather than the whole screen when the tab is sufficient.
- Stop sharing immediately after the clip is complete. A page that receives screen access may be able to observe on-screen activity for as long as the stream remains active.
- Store the resulting file securely and delete it when your retention policy no longer requires it.
Why a recording can be black or incomplete
DRM-protected playback
Digital Rights Management (DRM) is technology that enables online video and audio services to enforce their requirements. A protected video may render as a black rectangle in a capture, omit audio, or prevent capture altogether. That is an enforcement behavior, not proof that your JavaScript is wrong.
Do not disable browser protection, change hidden browser flags, or install a tool advertised to defeat DRM. Instead, look for the service’s authorized download, offline-viewing, clipping, or sharing feature. If none exists, ask the rights holder for permission or an approved copy.

Other causes
A blank result can also come from a page that has not finished loading, a paused player, a revoked permission, an unsupported capture mode, or a browser policy. Use the troubleshooting table below before changing settings.

Recording decisions that prevent surprises
- Short clip: use tab capture, test audio, and stop promptly.
- Software tutorial: use a window or screen only when browser chrome or another application is necessary; rehearse the path so private material does not appear.
- Long session: plan storage, test the recorder for the expected duration, and consider periodic stops rather than one unbounded file.
- Evidence or documentation: confirm that recording is permitted and preserve the original file without editing if its authenticity matters.
No single capture mode is guaranteed to behave identically across browsers and operating systems. Browser versions, administrative policies, permission labels, and audio support change, so verify the current documentation for the platform you are using and make a test recording before the real session.

Can I record a webpage video without opening a separate recorder app?
Yes. A page that calls getDisplayMedia() can receive a user-selected display stream, and MediaRecorder can encode it. The page still needs browser and operating-system permission, and the result depends on the selected source and platform.
Will the webpage know that I am recording it?
The browser exposes capture state to the page in some circumstances, and the service’s terms may restrict copying. Treat recording as an authorized activity and follow the site’s rules rather than assuming capture is invisible.
What should I do if the service offers an official download?
Use that option first. It is normally the clearest way to obtain an authorized copy and avoids trying to capture protected playback.
